In the midst of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, when Huma Abedin was working for then First Lady Hillary Clinton, the young aide could never have imagined the details of her future husband Congressman Anthony Weiner's sex scandal. Twitter and Facebook did not exist, nor did the sexting epidemic. Yet the feelings of embarrassment and intense public attention she's experiencing today are similar to those her boss Hillary felt back in the 1990s, and Huma is reportedly reaching out to the secretary of state for advice.
Born in the US to Indian and Pakistani parents and raised in Saudi Arabia, 35-year-old Huma serves as Clinton's chief of staff, traveling the world with America's top diplomat. After Weiner confessed that the inappropriate photos were of him on Monday, Huma sought advice from Hillary, but it was apparently her own decision to not stand by his side during his confessional press conference. By Tuesday evening, she was on her way to Africa with Secretary Clinton for a weeklong mission.
Insiders say Huma, who is widely respected in Washington, will likely stick by her husband, whom she married last year in a ceremony officiated by Bill Clinton — perhaps that was a bad omen. And now there are reports that she is pregnant. Whether voters and congressional leadership will forgive Weiner is another question. See photos of Huma over the years now.
