Favorite Alien Movies From the '80s

Best Alien Movies From the 1980s

The Thing is making a comeback to theaters, but it's not quite the same story you remember from 1982. Hitting theaters tomorrow, it still takes place in Antarctica, but now, Kurt Russell's lead is being passed down to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and there's more external alien action to keep you jumping out of your skin. Hopefully it will stand up to the original classic that inspired so many other movies (and video games).

Come to think of it, the '80s were good years for sci-fi horror films, especially those revolving around aliens. Take a look at some of our favorite retro alien movies here, and load up your queue for an extraterrestrial weekend.

UFO Sightings Take Flight in Recent Years

Alongside the premiere of the History Channel's new documentary Secret Access: UFOs on the Record, alien spacecraft sightings are taking flight.

Alongside the premiere of the History Channel's new documentary Secret Access: UFOs on the Record, alien spacecraft sightings are taking flight. According to the Mutual UFO Network, they are receiving more claims of UFO sightings from sky watchers in Canada and the US than ever before: "Over the past year, we've been averaging 500 sighting reports a month, compared to about 300 three years ago [67 percent]."

While many of these supposed sightings can be easily dismissed as natural occurrences or military aircrafts, the History Channel film investigates those rare unexplainable claims. Featuring in-depth interviews with people that witnessed some of the most buzzed about UFO encounters of recent decades, the documentary attempts to prove the legitimacy of the few legendary alien spacecraft reports.

One of the most public cases of a UFO sighting occurred on a 1986 Japan Airlines flight over Alaska. The pilot immediately radioed air traffic control to report an unknown spacecraft. Years later the pilot continued to stand by the sighting despite public skepticism.

Do you believe any of the UFO sightings throughout the years were legitimate? After the break, check out a clip from Secret Access: UFOs on the Record on the Japan Airlines sighting and share your opinion.

Mars is on the brain this week — NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter found what appears to be flowing water on the surface of Mars. Of course, our obsession with the red planet and the little green men that come from it dates back a lot farther than this week. 5 Reasons to Watch Falling Skies This Summer

I sat in on the Falling Skies panel yesterday at WonderCon, and although I walked in not knowing much of anything about the Steven Spielberg-backed project on TNT, I walked out pretty excited to tune in when it debuts on June 19. After hearing what writers Melinda Hsu, Mark Verheiden, and star Drew Roy had to say about the series, and seeing a few sneak peeks, I came up with five reasons you should tune in this Summer. Check them out below!

  • The cast — Not only does the cast consist of ER alum Noah Wyle (who's been gone from the small screen for far too long in my opinion), but also stars Moon Bloodgood (Journeyman and Terminator Salvation), and up-and-comer Drew Roy (Secretariat), who is pretty easy on the eyes as a mashup between Joseph Gordon Levitt, Jake Gyllenhaal, and John Connor.
  • The story — From what I could tell from the clips, sci-fi addicts Melinda Hsu and Mark Verheiden are poised to do the genre justice. Falling Skies takes place six months after a worldwide alien invasion, where children are being rounded up and controlled with biomechanical harnesses. No one knows what they're being used for. There is a resistance movement, and the whole story feels a lot like one of my recent faves, The Walking Dead, except with, you know, aliens.

See the rest of the list after the break.

It Came From Outer Space: Favorite Alien Movies of All Time

The aliens have landed!
Best Movies About Aliens

The aliens have landed! Well, at least at the box office: Battle: Los Angeles, Paul, and Mars Needs Moms are all currently showing in theaters, proving that our fascination with the otherworldly is still going strong. While these three movies probably won't go down in the books as classics, there are plenty of movies about aliens that are spectacular — both in their genre and in film as a whole. Take, for instance, Ridley Scott's Alien. Totally creepy with incredible pacing and beautifully shot, this frightening sci-fi masterpiece still scares the bejeezus out of me. Thirty-two years later, it also stands the test of time. Keep on reading to see what other films made it onto my list.

NASA Astronaut Says Alien Visits Covered Up by Governments

If anyone knows whether extraterrestrial life exists, I'm guessing astronauts do.

If anyone knows whether extraterrestrial life exists, I'm guessing astronauts do. Dr. Edgar Mitchell, a 77-year-old former NASA moon-walker with Apollo 14 says that aliens have visited Earth many times, but that governments have concealed contact with these small-framed and large-eyed creatures for over 60 years.

"I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomena is real. I've been in military and intelligence circles, who know that beneath the surface of what has been public knowledge, yes — we have been visited. Reading the papers recently, it's been happening quite a bit."

In the radio interview, Mitchell said earthling technology is "not nearly as sophisticated" as the aliens' and "had they been hostile, we would be been gone by now." NASA responded to Mitchell's comments by saying, while Dr. Mitchell is a great American, the agency does not share his opinions on this issue.

This isn't the first time the astronaut has talked about non-human beings. For more on that, read more

Alien video: Puppet or real E.T.?
Here it is! The alien peeping Tom video we talked about this week. Well, it's been released and — the alien looks very traditional. The Denver Post reports: "Over the course of three minutes or so, the footage shows a white creature with a balloon-shaped head that keeps popping up and down in a windowsill that was 8 feet above ground. The face was white, with large black eyes that seemed to blink. 'If it was a puppet, it would be a very elaborate and sophisticated puppet,' said Alejandro Rojas, education director of MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network, who spoke at the press conference. Rojas said the video was taken on July 17, 2003, in Nebraska by Stan Tiger Romanek, who set up the camera because he thought peeping Toms had been looking into his house at his two teenage daughters. Romanek did not appear at the news conference." How close of an encounter is this?
