President Bush just approved what he's calling an "extraordinary, one-time" deployment of 3,200 additional Marines to Afghanistan. In March, 2,200 marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and 1,000 Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, based in Twentynine Palms, Calif., will deploy.

Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said yesterday, "this has been timed to maximize our ability to take on the Taliban should they choose — unwisely, I may add — to attempt a second Spring offensive." The additional marines will bring US presence to 30,000 troops, the most since the US-led 2001 overthrow of the Taliban government. According to Pentagon data, currently about 28,000 non-US foreign troops are also in Afghanistan.

"Extraordinary one-Time deployment"? Uhm, wasn't there another "one-time deployment" last year? Is anyone in the press EVER going to call this President on just blatantly lying?
1At least this comes on the heels of our victory in the Balkans.
2If you're in the military there is no such thing as a one time deployment. Godspeed to the Marines who are slated for this deployment.
3agreed with piper...don't ever tell a marine wife it's a one time deployment. Your life is a series of them.
4The word Marine(s), as in "3,200 additional marines to Afghanistan..." should be capitalized. (3,200 additional Marines)
5Godspeed to the Marines. I had to read that blurb carefully for my brother's battalion. @_@
6Stir the pot a little more.
I wonder when people will realize our PRESENCE overseas is actually making the problem worse and not better.
7I'm really tired of this president. It seems like he's really trying to leave everything a mess for the new guy.
8with all do respect our troops go where they are told so if you think the troops presence overseas is making things worse then vote in the next election. Just because it isn't what people want doesn't mean military families don't still have to make those sacrifices.
9Afghanistan is a time bomb. I have several friends posted there in difference capacities and the word on the ground: its not good.
