An explosion targeting a US Embassy vehicle rocked the Doura suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, this morning. Four Lebanese bystanders were killed in the blast that also injured twenty. Though no US diplomats or citizens were in the car at the time, a Lebanese driver employed by the embassy was injured. The explosion sent dark, thick smoke billowing over the mainly Christian region.
Bordered by both Syria and Israel, this explosion comes on the heels of a tense political climate in Lebanon. Former pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud resigned in November and a parliamentary vote to find his successor has been postponed 11 times. Additionally, the July War, a 33-day conflict in Lebanon and northern Israel between Hezbollah forces and the Israeli military displaced nearly 1 million Lebanese and 500,000 Israelis, and severely damaged the Lebanese infrastructure in 2006.

1What a flashback. About 20 years ago Hezballah blew up my uncle's Marines barracks in Beirut. It was the largest terrorist attack against the US before September 11th. They have the nerve to call themselves "God's party?" God wouldn't want anything to do with what they're doing.

"severely damaged the Lebanese infrastructure"? I'll say so - Israeli air forces dropped fliers on towns in Lebanon telling people to evacuate because bombing would begin within the hour - the UN Convention on Human Rights, as well as Israeli Generals found that the bombings began less than 10 minutes afterwards in each case, and those 1000+ civilians that died in Lebanon were killed primarily because of civilian attacks (which, again, the UN Convention and 2 Israeli General confirmed - Hezbollah attacked only military targets, and unfortunately, the Israeli military did not) that were caused by bridges used to escape cities being bombed out prior to bombing the enclosed areas.
Once again, violence begets violence, but this is getting ridiculous... anyone who thinks this is about religion, including those performing the violence on both sides, is completely daft.
