Wendy Lewis, the author of Plastic Makes Perfect: The Complete Cosmetic Beauty Guide feels that if you're unhappy with your body, why not just fix it?! She's made a career for herself as a "knife consultant" and even though we live in a time where you can "fix" anything you don't like, are the days of embracing your imperfections long gone? I know a lot of celebrities feel it is, but how do you feel about having a nose that gives you character, or having a little extra cushion for the pushin? Do tell ladies, what are your views on plastic surgery being a readily available quick fix?

I wouldn't get it being 20 years old, my body is a-ok. But maybe when I am 35 years old and have kids and need to feel a little more sexy or betetr about my bod I will.
1I have no problem with things like Botox or Restylane (I am in the industry, after all :]) - but extreme physical alterations...I can't get behind it. I have yet to hear a really good argument.
2This is a difficult issue to weigh in on because it's impossible to put yourself in someone else's shoes who is really not comfortable with an aspect of their body. I have had friends with TERRIBLE noses for example, and I can't really fault them for getting them fixed. Me personally I don't have a perfect nose but I would hate to change it because it's mine. I don't really see the need for breast implants and stuff like that but then again I don't have a problem with my breasts either. I guess my opinion is that overall if there is something majorly wrong with your body, it's ok to get it fixed, but I think people should stay away from the pursuit of perfection type surgery... the "little refinements". That's the problem with Hollywood plastic surgery... EVERYONE from Ryan Seacrest to Angelina Jolie has had AT LEAST minor refinements, so the rest of us look at them and go, jeez... these people are unreal, I am really ugly!
3i hate that plastic surgery has become so standard, but i admit i have plans for my own someday. one thing i will never try, however, is botox. it frightens me. i can't see any good coming from poisoning and paralyzing muscles.
4It's important to make the distinction between plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery. I had a breast reduction when I was 18 for medical reasons, not cosmetic. (My breasts were a size F and so heavy they were making my back deformed). The scars are still visible 8 years later, so sometimes I have to explain things when I'm with a new man, but it's the best decision I ever made.
Unnaturally modifying your body is a drastic thing to do when it's just for looks. But plastic surgeons are also the people who do reconstructive surgeries for breast cancer survivors, burn survivors, and people who have had traumatic facial injuries.
5I have mixed feelings about the issue. I mean, the examples that leafonthewind gave above are good: burn survivors and facial injuries. These are people that benefit hugely from platic surgery and I believe it's a gift for these people to have that technology.
On the flip side, people are getting their belly buttons "fixed" to look better.
Where is the line? It's hard to define.
I just know that when I see women who are nipping and tucking and botoxing and whatnot, I feel a sadness. Not necessarily a pity for them or judging them, just sad that our society has turned into this.
6If you are uncomfortable with your body I say go for it. But you should only do it for yourself. If it is going to make you happy I don't see why not. Although going into it you must be aware of the risks that come along with it.
7I'm sorry but I'm all for it. If someone wants to do something like this, it's their decision-who am I to judge.
I've had lip injections, my first time at 24 and I have no regrets. If I had the money I would do it again.
I think to each their own and who really has the right to judge anyone for their personal decisions.
Everyone is influenced by something in this world, whether it be this, or the type of clothing you wear, car you drive and so forth. Maybe that isn't AS extreme as changing your looks but it's along the same idea, why judge someone on something that's a personal decision.
8i don't see anything wrong with plastic surgery, either. i'm planning on having my nose done when i'm done with law school, for both necessary and cosmetic reasons, and couldn't be more excited about it as it's something i've wanted done for as long as i can remember. because it's a personal decision, i don't think it's anybody else's business!
9My outlook is the same as with most things - within reason. (Of course, everyone's "reason" is different.)
I have every intention of having my tummy tucked and boobs lifted once I have kids. Sure, I have the added benefit of it easing stress on my back, but I mostly want it to look better. I fully admit that. I also wouldn't be entirely against having some work done to ease my wrinkles, but I doubt that'll actually happen.
10That should've been once I'm DONE having kids. I've had kids. I just don't know if I'm done yet. *lol*
11I myself had a "nose job" or septo-rhinoplasty because of a broken nose, I broke it as a child, and although i wasnt hideous i always hated that crooked thing. I have no problem with plastic surgery, as long as you dont go overboard with it, or get enhancements that are just downright unnatural.
12I did. Had it done. 8 months ago.
13All I can say is that it is everyone's own personal choice, and no one should judge.
BUT, for all you prospective do-ers out there....be sure you can afford it. It isnt just the initial procedure. Be sure that if complications arise in the future, or you need to get them "fixed", that you can afford to do so.
So important.
but I dont regret it. I needed it like you cant even imagine. I was boy-like.
I would never have any sort of plastic surgery unless it was medically needed. Some of my friends have it, and as far as I am concerned, they looked better without it, but whatever.
14I do not have a problem with plastic/cosmetic surgery at all. I do not think it is good idea if you are under 18 unless there are other health issues. My sister had breast reduction at 16 and my Mom had it when she is in late 20's early 30's. I don't think I could ever do anything to my face but I really want to get a breast lift after I lose some weight I want my 20 year-old boobies back.
15I am not one to judge anyone or to say that plastic sugery is outrageous, just like most sugars said already.
I don't have plans for it right now, but sometime down the road if I feel it's needed to make me feel better or for health reasons, I will do it.
16I don't have any problems with plastic surgery, but I do believe that because it's an elective procedure it should not count as "medical leave" from work. It drives me nuts to have to pick up the slack because a coworker is out having lipo.
17missyd made a good point. Keep in mind the $$$ in case of anything down the road.
Realize with procedures such as implants you will need to get them re done after a few yrs. Make sure this is something you think you will be able to financially be able to do.
18Whatever makes you happy as long as you are smart about it! Do your research and pick the best doctor for you! Life is short, enjoy yourself and do what makes YOU happy!
19I won't get it myself, mainly because I'm deathly afraid of surgery. Minor or major. But I don't think people are terrible for doing it. Everyone has the need to feel comfortable with themselves. BUT I do think if you can fix your body flaws some other way without surgery, that should be your first option because of health reasons.
20I can't really say whether it's right or wrong for anyone. I don't like the idea of plastic surgery being a 'quick fix' for anything, but sometimes it's needed, like in the case of burn or accident victims. As for the purely cosmetic side, that's a personal choice, and I can't see myself going for plastic surgery because it really scares me. And because it's wrong for me doesn't mean it's wrong for everyone.
21I used to think 'whatever will help make you feel good about yourself' - and if plastic surgery will do that for you, go for it. But recently I've heard of two people I've known who died after having elective plastic surgery. They just never woke up from the anesthetic. Dead for something they didn't *have* to do. So I'm changing my mind on this. It scares me how offhand everyone is about going under the knife - young girls, no less. It's always a risk. ALWAYS.
22I agree with bbkf!!!
23I've had plastic surgery and it's been such a positive experience for me. After I had my son I breastfed FOREVER and wanted to get my boobs re-done..so I did. My boobs were perfect before my son but after..yikes!! Having kids can def. change your body to look completely opposite of what it did before. It's not something I had to do..but I wanted to feel better and it absolutely made me feel better. It's something I did for me and I couldn't be happier. I just can't stand the people that do have surgery and deny it--having people think it's natural. People just need to be honest!!
24i dont know either way but i was just thinking its such a slippery slope. with so many "normal" ppl getting surgery the norm changes and everyone feels some sort of pressure or push to get work done. its different from looking at a celebrity who is clearly unattainable as opposed to looking at a coworker who just looks improved and you think you could get that look too. i'm not putting down ppl who get surgery, but maybe there is something to be said for putting effort and attention into getting ppl to accept that the human body changes/sags/wrinkles with time and that these things are not deformities to be fixed...
25i think theres definatley times when its okay... i'm going into speech pathology and of course corrective surgeries for cleft palates are so essential... and i can understand women who've gone through pregnancies wanting to do it, but i heard some creepy story of this woman who wanted to look like an Egyptian pharoah and kept having face surgery until she did! that stuff is just wrong
26I would totally get plastic surgery when Im older
how terrible is it though that we cant just be happy with ourselves and age naturally? kind of sad that every woman you see on TV has had something done to her...
27if you have the money then why not? I personally wouldnt spen my money on but i wouldnt knock someone else - its their money.
28A superficial alteration? No.
29I don't understand why people feel the need to change how they look what ever happened to being yourself rather than being generic?
that's a hard issue. On one hand, i think women just do plastic surgery because they need to feel just as 'pretty' as the celebrities. But they don't realize that it's just a huge mistake.. they aren't that perfect! On the other hand, a woman was born to feel pretty and good with herself too! So.. i would only recover to plastic surgery in a very special case. I think we must love ourselves not only by our breasts size or our bikini body.. we are more than that!
30seconded, popgoestheworld.
31the feminist inside me is crying right now
32right now, i'm pretty content with my body.
i think if i were to get anything done it would be a boob lift.
i'm not wanting humungo-Pam Anderson boobs, just a bit of a lift.
i don;t have muffins, so i wouldn't get a tummy tuck or lipo.
when i get older, i WILL say that i am not against botox for those wrinkles!
i don't judge ppl who get work done, though. As long as you're really happy with it, then go for it. like tha girl from that High School movie crap; i saw a before and after (i thought she was ugly now), but after seeing her nose before, all i could say was "daaaayyyyyuuumm". i'm sure she's 10 million times happier now that she got rid of her nose.
33i just found out a few weeks back that friend got her boobs done (she's NOT in the industry), i was shocked! all this time i envied the b*tch for having perky boobs (she's like a full B-cup, so it never crossed my mind). she thought i was gonna judge her, but i was happy for her!
we hugged and drank some more merlot . . .
34I would get plastic surgery in a heart beat. I would get total reconstruction of my teeth and jawline. I would get my nose done. Liposuction in my thighs, chin, stomach, arms, and butt. Breast implants for more perkier breasts. Under eye lift so don't look so damn tired all the time.
35For the most part it's a great thing. HOWEVER, I also think a lot of plastic surgeons need to exercise their "No, not necessary" for some people (E.g. the Jackson Clan, Tara Reid, Kenny Rogers) who take it to the extremes or who don't need it.
36I know this is very controversial, but I think it is awful! Why would women put themselves through so much trauma, miss work, max out finances...I just can't relate. I want to spend my vacay on a beach, not in bandages. I'm old school, I think confidence is more beautiful than looking like a clone.
37do what you want, but make sure you're doing it for yourself and not for someone else.
38I've had corrective plastic surgery and that's one thing. But to get it just to "fit in" or make someone like you more - that's not worth it. There are complications to be had and consequences to be lived with should something go wrong.
39you go, jadenirvana
40If you are that unhappy, and have the money, go for it! I don't think I would ever get anything other than lipo. I like being natural.
