Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright recently characterized the Bush Administration as one of America's "worst presidencies." In D.C. promoting her latest book, Albright told a crowd:
“This is a purely practical point here, and I think there’s a lot of work to be done. And I think the judgment is that this is one of the worst presidencies we’ve had and people will wonder what it is that the role of the vice president is.”
Specifically, Albright criticized Bush for not doing enough to take on climate change and energy issues.
Do you agree with Secretary Albright? Will George W. Bush's administration go down as one of the worst in history?

I heard Albright speak on Bill Maher. She is a very intellegent woman, and will be an asset to which ever democrat wins the presidency (hopefully)!
1Poor George. He got stuck with the left over garbage from the former Clinton adminstrations overly zealous ability to spend, spend , and not worry about the future consequences. Unfortunately, George got the blame and debt balance sheet as well. He is as good a president and he didn't fiddle around with any Monica while working on his budget.
2OMG - are you kidding - We had the best economy and a balanced budget under the Clintons. Do you know how much this false war has cost us as the next generation and our children that are not even born yet - we are debtors and this debt will not go away like paying down your credit card.
Have you noticed the dollar's decline and how much debt we are in to the rest of the world. China basically owns a lot of our debt because of George Bush. Let's look at how much money George and the Republicans have taken from the subprime mortgage companies to allow predatory lending. It is criminal. Madeline Albright is a brilliant woman who went back to school later in age to get her degrees. She is the ultimate working mom and her first book was so good, I plan on buying her new one.
3akiss, how can you possibly talk about Clinton's spending when Bush is spending BILLIONS on the war and reducing taxes at the same time? Math doesn't work that way. If you spend more, you need more money coming in.
Not only that, because of Bush, our infrastructure is horribly neglected. You only need to look to the collapse of the Minnesota interstate bridge to see that Bush's spending in the wrong areas has hurt the everyday American.
4Great points, Kays!
5I agree with akiss. Bush definitely got stuck with the baggage Clinton left behind (which, anyone who has done their homework like an intelligent person and not just brainwashed by the media knows). If only ol' Bill had focused a little more on running the country efficiently and thoroughly than playing footsies with the media (and Lord knows who else), as all Democrats so enjoy doing (especially Obama, who can't even make a central point in his speeches). As for the dollar, the value of it fluxuates throughout years, just as the stock market has. And what country ISN'T in debt? I'd love to know.
6I would also like anyone who says this is a false war say that to a soldiers' face with any fortitude in their eyes.
Jovain, please explain to me how increasing spending while decreasing taxes equals a balanced budget. I am dying to know.
7Oh yes, that is right Bush had a republican congress and a free ride for six years to change what supposedly the Clintons left behind. I think someone needs to do their homework. I am in finance and study this every day. Hello = there were no weapons of mass destruction. False/Liar - yes those are terms I would use to describe this war. Ask George to take a look in those soldiers eyes since he is the one that lied to them. I have nothing but praise for our troops and salute them and their families. Thank goodness the CIA finally came clean before he took us into Iran and another false war.
8That is what I think when everyone roots for John McCain, Kays.
The Republicans had control over the congress and presidency for 6 years! They had their chance to do what they could, and it didn't work. In so many aspects our country is worse off because of their incompetant leadership. If they couldn't step up when they had a free ride, what good will McCain or any Republican be as president?
9Exactly Jill!
10The spending habits of the Bush administrating make me sick to my stomach. So does the entire Neo-Conservative party - because they sure as hell aren't REAL Republicans.
We need to stop financing this war, cut spending, and work on restoring the value of our American dollar! And that's why I'm plugging Ron Paul just as hard as I possibly can!
11There were NO weapons of mass destruction? I can't believe what I'm reading! Is what you're saying that there are no weapons of mass destruction anywhere, or just in the Middle East? Either answer is wrong! There were weapons of mass destruction not just found in the Middle East, but Korea. I don't say this out of speculation, I know soldiers who are out there are exposed to what's really going on (such as the terrorism upon women, children, elderly, using children for purposes of warfare, etc) and I have an inside look to politics through connections.
12I'm not saying Bush is doing a great job. Trust me, there's a lot he could improve upon. I don't think he's the best president we've ever had, but I think he got stuck with some nasty business that no one gives him any credit for. Kaysnowboarder, I'm glad that you have praise for our troops, it's good to hear, but I won't be arguing with you because I honestly don't think you're equipped to debate about this topic.
Jillness, I don't remember saying anything about increasing spending and decreasing taxes will equal a balanced budget 0.0 I'm just saying that the value of the American dollar isn't always stable.
Lol clarient, Ron Paul appears in the most random places!
13Just out of curiosity Jillness, who's that on your icon? I can't figure out who it is, and it's driving me crazy!
14Hello - weapons of mass destruction is what was sold to us to go into Iraq. Please send me to any credible evidence that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. I think Bush has been the terrorist - when it comes to killing innocent Iraqis. There was no reason for us to go into that country and it is time to get out.
Dear Jovian, I know more about this than you know. If you think an unstable dollar is good - you really do not know what you are talking about. This is bad my friend for this country - really bad. A strong dollar is critical to our future. Even Bushs' people will tell you this.
15Granted, I was just a young teenager at the time and not all that observant- but wasn't there a budget surplus (or projected surplus) under the Clinton administration?
I think the Bush presidency has hurt us- both at home (the huge war expenses) and abroad- Bush is an international object of scorn, and I think he makes all Americans look bad. He just furthers the "ugly American" stereotype- the loudmouth bully. It's a shame.
16Yes. I agree with Albright 100%
17i am proud to have little opinion about bush. i have come across countless numbers of people who go " ugh gosh bush sucks get him out of office" and when i ask why, all i get is a half assed 'uuhhhh weelll, uhh' now this debate is just an extended 'uhhh' with a bunch of nasty 'political' bs like sour whipped cream on a cake. i think the media had said too much for anyone to have a true honest opinion about anything.
18So sad that you would think apathy is better than having an opinion.
19My avtar is Jessica Stam, a canadian model. I think she is so striking looking, and in this picture it looks like she is whispering to someone...that is why I chose it for my avtar.
I think many times the democratic position on war is distorted. I think everyone wants to stop those people and organizations that want to harm the US. But I feel the war in Iraq distracted us from where the real threat is...Al Queda, the Taliban, etc. We were made to believe that Iraq had their finger on the biological warfare button, when it clearly wasn't the case. Saddam was a terrible man, but there are other terrible men who are much more dangerous to the US than Saddam was. Now we are over extended, and can not tend to the real threats. We can't even threaten countries, because they know we are short handed.
20Jill well said
21I think there have been plenty of credible sources speaking out against Bush (Powell, CIA, Clarke, etc.)
Plus, you can't say that snafus like Alberto Gonzales, wire tapping, decline of the dollar, No Child Left Behind, etc. are the result of the media.
22Jillness, I love the way you debate
It's true, I so often feel that our country is
hanging by a thread. I worry about it frequently.
23And Jessica Stam is gorgeous.
and in case you haven't noticed, i do have an opinion, read between the lines, its there. i choose not to take part in the whole 'bush sucks' battle because i believe its too jabbled up by screwy media for anyone to have an honast and true opinion, without being influenced by dumbasses like the people ive met.
24and yes i believe SOME opinions are true, because i do believe that some people can go untouched by nasty opinions, obviosly i dont mean every single person in the world. you think bush sucks, you think bush rocks, and some people choose not to pick sides. done and done.
25Although I was pretty young when Clinton was in office, and I don't remember anything that he did, I keep hearing about all the bills that he passed and how much he did for minorities. It's a shame that his personal life affected his place in history. I thought that Bush was going to do much more on moral issues, issues concerning social conservatives. He didn't do that much, which makes it all a waste. He didn't accomplish what he promised the social conservatives plus the whole billions of dollars going to an uneventful war. Nay to Bush!
26When the CANADIAN DOLLAR IS HIGHER THAN THE US DOLLAR then yeah your presidency sucks!! Tell the truth and shame the devil, your inflation is at its highest in 17 years, subprime is the word of the year and yet people still jump to bush's defence. His diplomatic record is like that of a kindergarten bully, pre-emptive strikes, axes of evil, etc etc. His rhetoric has made america one of the most reviled nations on earth so yeah he sucked.
272 comments: 1) JovianSkies, you are the epicenter of rhetoric and you are horrible as a person (using US Soldiers to win an arguement). 2) SpazzyDana, why are you even making comments if you don't "pick sides?" This is NOT a debate about whether we SHOULD be debating... put the bong down and go back to playing Everquest.
Ignorance is beautiful its what the Republicans bank on. (Not to mention Christianity).
You know are country sucks when we are Canada's Mexico. Pretty soon Canuck College teens will be flocking down here to drink heavily and make movies taking their shirts off! w00t! Can't Wait! That's why I am voting for Guliani (aka Bush II)
28Let's make sure we're not attacking each other!
29Booyakasha! Nailed it! Thank you Liberty set me free!
30So Clinton had the entire Monica affair, that doesn't change the stable state our economy and budget was in during his presidency! Just because Bush kept his affairs under wraps does NOT mean he brought better days for our country.
31I am so sick of people bringing christianity into everything..
32Definitely agree with Albright. This war is a disaster. Civil liberties have been chipped away at pretty steadily and there have been many a shady dealings involved.
33...then take Christianity out of everything
34I agree... not all Catholics are fanatical
just like not all Republicans are war hungry and live on a steady diet of Fox News...
I think that this administration and the current Republican Party has strayed so far from the true Republican ideals that they really shouldnt even be associated with the elephant anymore.
What happened to family values (larry craig), being fiscally conservaive(billions of dollars in debt), preserving the state sovereignty and the right to privacy (National ID cards and the Patriot Act), I could go on and on...
35Thank you beagle..not all christians are crazy
36I definitely agree with her. Good for her for saying something.
37I would like to address the issue on excusing Bush's dismal record by scapegoating it on Clinton. This is patently untrue. Bush came to office with a historic surplus, and is leaving office with the nation more in debt than it has ever been before. As for the press, don't make me laugh. For years they skated over all his misdeeds because they were so personally charmed by him, and only recently have they reported the painfully obvious because it can no longer be ignored. But there are still daily accounts over how the DC press fawns over him, laughing like little girls with crushes whenever he deigns to talk to them. . . I can't wait for January 2009!
38To legalbegal, you say not all Catholics are fanatical. Just a point of clarification, Bush is not Catholic and neither are the neo-conservative Christians who support him. Historically Catholics have voted for Democrats. And in general are not considered part of the Christian Right.
Regardin Jovian's comments about the nasy business Bush was left with. I agree that Bush was left with nasty business, but it was not left behind my Clinton. Bush was president during the attacks of September 11th. And in reaction to this tragedy, I think he failed. Our economy is weaker, we are fighting two wars which have no clear or clean end to them, and there are now more people in the world community who disapprove of our actions. This disapproval ranges from a loss of credibility in Europe and other historical allies and in more extreme cases even creates more terrorists.
39Agree with her--and please, I think people just need to get over the Monica thing. Jeez. That didn't affect his ability to leave office with a pretty great surplus. I'm not condoning the action of cheating on your significant other in any way, shape, or form, but like Chris Rock said, "It's not Reverend Clinton, it's not Pastor Clinton, it's just Bill Clinton". People make mistakes, but in my opinion that was his personal life and didn't really affect his presidential duties. (And if you wanna get really specific and bring personal lives into the "was he a good president" debate, Bush has had a DUI, which, IMO, is pretty up there in terms of "bad moral things to do" as well).
40Politics makes people so ugly. Add that to internet anonymity-assisted delusions of grandeur and you get most of this.
41I just feel like a lot of the time people lump them into the same group. Which is why I was saying not all of us who are associated with the Catholic church are crazy right wing fanatics who want to impose our belief system on everyone.
42I am not going to start an arguement on what the clintons left behind, or how other presidencies have been worse or better than George W's but i will say that i voted for him both times, and Being a family member of someone in Iraq I support our troops and our president, I am not saying he was perfect or that he didnt make mistakes, in fact i think his biggest mistake was not being forthright to the public and really talking to the american people about what is going on. He isnt a liar, he isnt satan, or hitler, or a warmonger.
43thank you city girl --- i was like what clinton spending -- um he left bush with a surplus! and bush just ruined it and now yay we are headign for a recession and stuck in a unwinnable war. and no saying that is not disrespectign the troops -- i think the adminstration is disrespecting them by sending them over there like lambs to the slaughter.
44I agree, politics can make people ugly. It is sad that people can't just have a discussion about it without resorting to personal attacks.
I personally agree with Albright. I think Bush's legacy is embarrasing and might even go down as worse than Hoover's, but it will take a couple years before we know that one. As for as economic policy is concerned, Clinton had surplus, Bush a deficit. That's not opinion, that's fact. It doesn't matter which one you personally like better, it doesn't change that.
45Thank you, LegalBeagle. I believe that the fanatics have been overpublicized and given Christianity a bad name, especially since most of America is Christian.
46MicrochipJoel, I don't appreciate your comments. You're ignorant and callow, and unable to debate. You didn't bring any information into your argument, only insults. I never tried to use soldiers to 'win', I said they were a source of information for me. From the way you argue, you're clearly still in high school and obviously an angry person. Therefore, everything you've said I've dismissed, and won't waste time on (so I wouldn't expect a response from me, were I you), but not after I reported you for being malicious. Let's keep this a nice website.
Kindly don't do it again.
Lol, The City Girl, I love your comment!
47I dunno, all I can say is I was a Bush supporter and Republican until about 2002, and they lost me. And our country has been going down the tube for 8 years....
48as a percent of gdp, debt is up, but not all time high: http://zfacts.com/p/318.html
i aint no economist or nothing, but i think that the decline of the dollar is due to unfavorable balance of payments (i.e. we import alot more than we export) and not our national debt.
49I'm from Europe and I'm absolutely amazed by the level of rethorical propaganda in American news, I'm sorry if that offends anybody personally! When the UN veto'ed Bush and the war in Iraq it was because of the missing evidence of weapons of mass destruction, everyone in Europe knew that this war was based on lies! And didn't the CIA recently state that their intelligence was incorrect? All I'm saying is that Bush's opinion is respected NO WHERE in the EU, he is a joke in most people's eyes.
