Jessica Alba is the cover girl for February's issue of Elle magazine. She talks openly about her career and denies ever using her sexuality to advance it. She was quoted saying:
I think there are ambitious girls who will do anything to be famous, and they think men in this business are used to women doing that. . . . Contrary to how people may feel, I've never used my sexuality. That's not part of it for me. When I'm in a meeting, I want to tell you why I'm an asset, how I'm a commodity, how I can put asses in the seats, not, "There's a chance you're going to be able to f*** me." That's never been my deal.

It seems like Hollywood has its own rules, but in real life it's not out of the question for women to use their sexuality to advance their careers, earn more money, or even get preferential treatment from their male bosses. So what I want to know is,

Honestly, no. I haven't. I would feel weird using my sexuality to get ahead. Like it would be so akward! I love workign with men, but I NEVER flirt with them! Talk about weird at work! Plus I have a boyfriend with whom I am very loyal to!
1Jessica Alba is FULL of sh*t! Why don't the magazines ask her about all of her nearly nude shots she does for men's mags like Maxim and how that completely contradicts her statements about not "using" her sexuality? or her turn as a stripper in "Sin City" where she flaunted everything or her role as a bikini babe in that other movie that sucks where she's in a bikini the whole time?
what a load of crap! i seriously can't stand this chick. i hope her baby can crap cuz there's no hope if its as anal retentive as Alba...
2but on a lighter note, no i don't think i've used my sexuality to advance before. i may have flirted with some guys at my old jobs as a waitress but that's about it...
3not asking to judge, but out of curiousity, who voted YES, and why?
I voted NO. I don't have to think twice about it.
I think Alba is full of it...why is she posing half-naked in every magazine? what a coincidence she's covered up in the photo shoot.
4lmao @ nicachica..i think we're ALL wondering why she even spat out those lies...Alba needs to get a REAL job! what is she talkin about putting asses in seats? don't all her movies FLOP?
how's THAT for the non-latina? lol
5Alba really needs to stop with her lies! It's not like she can actually act so how the hell does she keep getting these bomber movies? Ummm, selling her sexuality!!! Also there are so many half naked shots of her it's ridiculous!
6alba is a hypocrite
I have used my sexuality to get ahead, i wont lie. I have flirted my way into better positions (no pun intended) why not?
7if i have its be accident
8she is so transparent...
9she doesnt use youre sexuality but 'Good Luck Chuck' was pretty much a film about her a**...
i dont think i have ever intentionally done it.. actually no im pretty sure i have NOT done it at work.. i work with old men.. so no thanks!
10To get a drink yes, to get ahead no.
11NO I HAVE NOT.
12Jesus.
Does flirting actually work in getting ahead at real jobs? I can't imagine it actually working.
13TSK TSK soooo wrong!
14Jessica has to, she has nothing else to offer since she isn't even a serious actress anyway. But a mediocre one. Why does she think that she doesn't get parts in serious dramas? You can't pose for GQ and Maxim in next to nothing then complain about not being taken seriously.
15But to answer the question, no. I want to be respected in the work place. It's like posing for playboy and acting as if everyone in your next meeting wont know. C'mon!
Noooo wayyyy!!! Whoever voted "YES", that is just wrong.
16This b*tch really needs to get over herself. Does she talk about anything but herself? Jesus!
17I think there is a difference in using your assets, your photos, your image, etc to promote yourself to the consumer audience, which is what she did in her interview/photoshoot for Elle, and to use her sexuality to acquire work, which is what she says she does not do in the interview excerpt.
18HAH, no I have not, and I never will. If people want to treat me differently just because they think they can get in my pants, I don't even want what they're offering.
19I agree with the earlier comment. I happened upon some of those shots of her posing nearly nude in mens' magazines as well. I have to be honest and say that they were so "racy' I could hardly believe it was her. Funny thing is they were not shot that long ago, so she can't say that she isn't still doing it.
We have to be honest with ourselves at some point.
20I picked "other" because I may have inadvertently used my sexuality to get ahead. I don't work, so it wouldn't have been career-wise, but just ahead in general. I haven't ever flirted on purpose to get anything, but I have been told after the fact that I have gotten something because so & so found me sexy.
21I'm not really sure if I have or not, I haven't really needed to get ahead yet as I'm still young. But at uni I do flirt with my lecturers a little when I talk with them and especially during one on one oral presentations. Not in a particularly sexual way, but making them laugh, giving them a flirty smile, I think helps everyone relax, therefore a better delivery of my presentation and better mark. But overt sexual behaviour would be very inappropriate indeed.
22I would never screw my way up, (most men in the fashion industry are gay anyways), but unfortunately your looks and personal style gets you your job.
example:
Neiman Marcus Buyer position
Girl "A" is nice, and has a degree and 7 years experience with buying. but she's average looking and dresses kinda boring.
Girl "B" is nice, has the degree 5 years exp. with buying, and looks like she's ready to grace a Hollywood and Highland bilboard.
they are gonna pick girl B.
but in fashion you wouldn't get too far just by sucking d**k. you gotta have the goods too.
it's VERY competitive, so i'm not against winkin, and doing a little brown nosing if it means i'm gonna get paid 10 dollars more and hour.
23jessica alba is a dip-stick. she thinks she's too much . . .i can't believe Miss My-Sh*t-Don't-Stink is knocked up.
24I think she is very pretty and I'm sure she is a lovely person.
25But thats such a blatent lie - look at every single movie role she has ever had. Her ass was one of the key promotional tools for In to the blue
No, I've never used my sexuality because I'm pretty sure it would backfire on me. I agree with nicachica on her opinion of Jessica Alba, she seems like a totally fake b*tch.
26Of course, but not if I have a serious boyfriend. Then that's WAY overstepping.
27Not only do I think it was a hypocritical statement, but I think that was Alba outing how dumb she is. What most of you guys is saying is sexuality, she meant just straight up casting couch stuff. Have you ever f*cked someone to get ahead would be the question if you went off what she said.
28I think that every woman has done it at some point - and lets get real, using your sexuality does not mean SEX. It can be smiling the right way to disarm someone, or a laugh or whatever. Men will use every trick and tool they have to get what they want, that's why they make more and advance faster than women do.
Having your hair look amazing, and buying a flattering new suit for an interview, those are using your sexuality, and there is nothing wrong with it.
29I believe, as do nearly all of the posters, that Alba is a complete liar. She is an actress. I believe that there are actresses who have not used their sexuality to get ahead, however Alba is not one of them. Posing half naked on magazine covers is using her sexuality to gain coverage in the media, which is a part of her job!
I personally have not used my sexuality to get ahead, nor will I ever. When I make it in the business world no one would dare say she got that job because she sleeps with the boss or because flirts with the clients. I believe that women who use their sexuality to get ahead are ruining it for the rest of us. It is possible to be ambitious and still have limitations on that.
And I disagree with the previous poster. Going to work with your hair looking good, and buying a suit that looks good on you is not using your sexuality. Buying a suit that is too tight on your behind or is low cut so your cleavage hangs out - that is using your sexuality.
To truly compete with men in the workplace, you have to do it with your intelligence, your creativity, your ambition, and your work ethic. By using your sexuality you are cheapening yourself.
30Hey Jessica, the kettle and pot are calling your name.
Hm... I think I got hired for my first job because I was my boss' type. Nothing happened and I wasn't upset when I found out because I had the skills and education behind me.
Plus I wore jeans and sloppy t-shirts to work. Not exactly sexy wear.
31j. alba is full of sh*t. sure, she can put asses in the seats but how does she do that? by using her sexuality. you think people buy her cover magazines or see her movies because of her talent? pshh no way.
32she seems to be kind of an obnoxious human being, and i agree with those who are saying she's a hypocrite. sorry, but all the half-nekkid magazine shoots show your bosses that you are willing to get sexual to get ahead. yikes.
