In Buddhist tradition, the idea of karma basically means "You get what you give." It's all about your actions and how you treat people. Whatever you do intentionally to others comes back to you in the future. So if you are kind and generous, then good things will happen to you. On the other hand, if you are mean and insensitive to others, then not-so-good things could happen to you. Buddhists also believe in reincarnation, so the actions of your past lives can affect your present and future lives.

The so-called "Golden Rule" follows this same line of thought: Treat others the way you would like to be treated. So I'm wondering: Do you believe in karma? Do you think that how you treat others affects what comes your way?

I sure do believe in Karma. I DOES bite back *ouch*
1I strongly beilieve in Karma. What goes around comes around. If you do somethign bad or hurt someone, one day it will come back to you and you'll get hurt.
2I sure do! and what a b*tch it is...
3oh sh*t, there's my comment....thought it didn't come up...my bad.
typo in the 1st one....*it DOES bite back.
4I believe in karma. I also believe that if my actions to do good were motivated for good actions to be returned to me, then they would be slightly tainted. I think motivations for good actions (right intention) are just as important.
5I believe that you should treat others the way you would like to be treated, but i mean were all not perfect and we make mistakes.. just cuz we do something not so nice to someone else (depending on the severity of it) i don't always think that something horrible should happen back.. after all we are people and making mistakes is how we learn and grow.
6i do believe in karma, but sometimes good ppl go through terrible things.. and treated terribly by others no matter how good they are.. so whats the explanation for that?
7Very much so!
8I believe in it to an extent, but part of me doesn't because sometimes really bad stuff happens to good people. I just try to treat people with respect, the same way I'd like to be treated.
9I do believe in karma some what. but i agree with what missbanana said. sometimes sh*tty things happen to good people
10missbanana you should read "why do bad things happen to good people" by harold kushner. It will give you some insight on that and it's an amazing book.
11The general concept, yes. But like msbanana said, I don't think it's an absolute.
12missbanana and others... buddhism as a philosophy isn't about karma. the precepts begin with "all life is dukha" which is basically suffering and how suffering and the bad things you mentioned are interpreted. the philosophy is founded on how to interpret and live life so that one can cope with the universal suffering that everyone seems to interpret on varying levels in life.
13My dad bought me that book, very good
14No matter what I just try and treat people good. I mean, I love my fmaily and friends and I would never do anythgin to hurt them or make them feel like I don't love them. And I EXPECT that in return. You shouldn't treat people badly to start with - and if you do then I dont' see why they shouldn't get a kick in the ass in return...makes sense right?
15I definitely believe in karma, in that I think people who do nasty things will eventually get theirs (but people who wait to see what happens and get a happy from it are probably in for their own karma, lol) but I think bad things also happen for no reason. Somehow, every time I've gone through a tough time, I've had someone tell me, "Everything happens for a reason". Spare me. Sometimes they do, but sometimes things just happen, and that also isn't what the person wants to hear anyhow...actually, they'd probably just rather you shut your yapper and be there for them.
16i agree that everything happens for a reason
17but what about the people in the world who rap, sell drugs, and all those bad things.. they are not always caught and can go through life laughing.. where is karma there??
"Somehow, every time I've gone through a tough time, I've had someone tell me, "Everything happens for a reason". Spare me. Sometimes they do, but sometimes things just happen, and that also isn't what the person wants to hear anyhow..."
I completely agree. I hate the phrase "everything happens for a reason" in general, but mostly when it's said to someone who's going through a rough time.
18thanks aimeeb!! i love books and i looked it up online and ill for sure be looking into buying/borrowing from library. it sounds like a good read and probably a good learning experience.
19Absolutely!
20I don't always see positive karma comes back immediatley.....but negative karma ALWAYS shows up and is ALWAYS twice as bad.
all you've done's gonna come back twice. good or bad
21Oh I'm so glad there are others that hate the "everything happens for a reason" nonsense!
Anyway, I believe on some level that the more good you put into the world, the more good you receive. But yeah, crazy bad things happen to good people and vice versa.
22Yes i do believe in Karma
I firmly beleive in " what goes around comes around " ppl
who are disrespectful, mean and evil pay for what they've done one day or an other.
23I do... but I wish it worked faster!!
24lol controlledspin....i do believe in it!
25missbanana I think you will enjoy it. It really sheds a lot of light on the whole concept of karma and all that. Let me know what you think...
26I sort of do, but i always try to be a very nice person and go out of my way to help people and always basically get screwed by other people. So i think i am going to try and be a b*tch and see if then people are nice to me.
27I most certainly believe in karma. I know there are a lot of people who have done wrong by me and they are really going to get it. I don't take action myself sometimes, because it just isn't worth it, I believe that it will be taken care of for me. When you treat people as if they don't matter--like the homeless--you are doing this to your family of brothers and sisters in the world. Take the time to at least smile, give what you can, a kind word, a coat, a sandwich. A smile costs nothing, but the reward is great in heaven!!!
28I dont think there is a person in this world who hasn't been treated badly by someone. When bad things happen, like in my life, I just figure it is supposed to be that way, that there is something I need to learn. My life has been a hard road, but I still treat others with respect and love. Just because my life has been difficult does not mean that it is my fault. Things I believe will get better, I am 50 now and still live a very difficult life, but I am happy. I have a wonderful family, they are healthy, count the blessings you do have and don't concentrate on the things you don't. You have much, look around! This is a beautiful world we live in, take a walk and smell the flowers, look at the beauty all around you.
29I believe in Karma but not reincarnation.
30yes I do believe in Karma and reincarnation coz I'm buddisht.
31Absolutely. Sometimes it's a long time later, but as the song goes 'what goes around, goes around, goes around, goes all the way back arouuuund!'
32I definitely believe in karma and somewhat in reincarnation. Hate to say it, but look at Kanye. He was being gluttonous and arrogant about being "the best musician in the world", etc. etc. and his mother, bless her soul, passed away. Could it NOT be because of karma? Yes, but it's just as likely that he got his come uppence.
Somewhat offtopic, but karma and reincarnation stemmed from Indian philosophy/Hinduism, which gave rise to Buddhism (Buddha, who started Buddhism, was an Indian prince.) Just so you know.
33TOTALLY believe in karma- I see it happen everyday.
34100% believe in karma and it is a b*tch!
35Yep.
36Sure why not.
37If I don't believe in anything else, I'm definitely a fan of Karma. What goes around definitely comes around. It's a shame that people are so mean and they don't realize that the same people that they are mean to they have to face later in life.
38Yup. Just like the Justin Timberlake song.
Haha.
39Karma is the law of nature ---the law of cause and effect. A stimuli causes a certain reaction. It is thus best defined in analogy "What you sow is what you reap"---if you sow bad seed, you'll get a good harvest. It's also Bible-based --that God avenges. But God is also merciful and patient to people who ask for mercy/forgiveness and therefore repent and to people whose right is "perfect" for the what God desires. However, God also punishes people who commit sins without remorse, guilt and repentance. That's why the Bible teaches us "Do not take revenge. Let God's ire do it" for God will take care of it. God said, "It is mine to avenge. I will repay" ----but this goes only to people who love him, have faith in him and follow him.
40Nope. Not everyone gets karma. It's unfair.
41NO ITS A BUNCH OF CRAP!!! I ALWAYS HAVE BAD LUCK YET IM DONE NOTHING TO DESERVE IT! LIFE IS JUST CRUEL.
