Dear Sugar
I have always had long, thick, frizzy, shapeless hair that has hovered somewhere between wavy and curly. A few months ago, I got my hair cut into a very cute, choppy, shaggy, shoulder-length do with bangs and layers.
Since it was shorter, it didn't take me long to blow my hair out straight, and for the first time in my life, I absolutely LOVED my hair.
And then the summer came. As usual, it's been hot and humid in the northeast, with rain almost every day, and my hair is paying the price. No matter what I do, it's coarse and frizzy again, but it's too short to put in a ponytail now.
Even worse, because my hair is much shorter, it puffs out in all directions. I try to load it with product but then it just looks frizzy and greasy.
I'm going to have to let it grow out again so that I can do the ponytail thing by August, but, in the meantime, do you know of any miracle products that will reduce the frizz in my hair but won't leave it looking greasy? Phrizzy In Philly

If you have thick, frizzy hair, try using Aqua Oleum Shampoo.

It's made by Kerastase (orange line) and
Age Recharge Conditioner (green line).

Also, apply Bumble and Bumble's Styling Lotion

and Tonic

straight out of the shower while you hair is still very wet.
Try and shampoo your hair every second or third day. Frizzy hair tends to be dry, so make sure that you choose a creamy shampoo with gentle detergents. If at all possible, just blow dry the front of your hair. If it's frizzy, the heat from the blow drying is only going to add to the problem.
Look for conditioners containing silicones and proteins to coat the cuticles and reduce frizz. You can also use a leave in conditioner if your hair is still frizzing.
While your hair is in its strange growing out phase right now, try some cute hair accessories like these:

Scholl
Antik Batik
Dolce & Gabbana
Love it!! I am trying some of those products for my hair since I have thick and frizzy and naturally curly hair. Honestly, in the summer time all I ever do is slick it back in a bun, braid, or french braid. I see you have shorter hair. Is it too short to gather it back at the nape of your neck?
1DEFINITELY! Bumble and bumble styling creme is also awesome for taming frizz into curls.
2Oh...and I cannot live without BioSilk Silk Therapy.
3I need those products! My hair is always a mess in the Texas summers. It's thick, long and frizzy. I can spend an hour styling it only for it to look like I did nothing 5 min after being in the heat.
Last year, I resorted to wearing it curly (didn't know I could do it until I was on vacation with my sisters and used their products). Now, I'm using a CHI to keep it straight and have not had any issues with frizzy hair - but as a consequence my ends are dry and breaking.
Thanks for the product tips.
Love, Love Love Biosilk Silk Therapy. The mom of the guy that styled my hair in high school created Biosilk (or so he said).
4Ditto Fxy!!! I live in the south too and don't bother to straighten in the summer. When I go outside, it just expands and curls up anyways!!
5I live in the humid NE and totally feel for you. I have issues as well and have resorted to messy buns all summer because on top of the frizzy/curly thing I got thick locks! I love my hair when the weather agrees with it, but the summer is very difficult. I am definitely going to search for soem of these products. I use Aveda everything, and they do okay - but I just think there is no hope for my head.
6Yes JJ....you and I with our "Monica fro's"!!!
7I'd probably just wear a hat as it's the lazy person's solution, but Sugar's advice is good. I am also in Northeast. I understand your pain, but hey, you're not in DC.
8Jenna V bio-silk is my best friend. I had really long, down to my butt, curly hair, and just last year I cut it all off. I love it now, but i just got it cut again and it is a bit too short. The stylist always thin my hair because I have so much of it, but some times they thin a bit too much, which they did this time. Anyway now that I am wrambling I will say my other best friend when my hair is too short to pull back is a hair band. It looks cute with a fro.
9Have you tried Frizz-Ease....never used it but is suppose to be good...not sure if you have it in the US.
10Noice call! I love BB's products. The Matrix slick products are good too, and not as $$$ Kerastase.
11I feel for everyone with the humid hair drama.
I too, as many others on here live in the NorthEast.
Already in early summer this year I have been batteling a lot of these nasty humid dreaded hair days!
My hair gets all gross b/c it borders between straight and wavy hair, looking crappy, lol!
I try to striaghten it but as soon as I step outside the crappy look comes back!
I find, I often just have to sometimes find creative ways to wear my hair to hide it, ponytails, braids, updos. They are what seems to work for me to keep it well hidden. Otherwise it is just a mess!
12I don't have curly hair, but just enough of a wave to make it annoying. My solution is a medium round brush, a good hair dryer and then flat iron. It kinda takes a while but the key for me is to get my hair completely dry from the roots out. Then the flat iron seals the deal!
13Same routine for me tina, but Try KMS volume mousse, I have the same type of hair than you and trust me a little of that and your hair isn't annoying anymore! It give just a tiny tinby more mouvement and then you do the round brush. Try this
14Try Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom. It tames my hair like no other! Just go easy with it. I usually do the same as tina or pinkparadise - blowouts and updos. Ann's tip of Mousse is key too. But sometimes you have to leave the waves with this NE humidity. I like to wrap and twist fabric rollers for a few minutes after putting in the Silk Groom. Take it out and finish with mousse and silicone spray. Use a handband or a little clip for the front pieces to stay off your face...and you can wear your hair down and wavy. And have you tried John Frieda's Glaze? It does make your hair shiny, but the best is that it makes thick, coarse hair softer and more manageable.
15i have curly hair (although not as curly as some people on this site). i have luck with frederic fekkai products and oddly enough the pantene products for curly hair. although my hairdresser would kill me if she ever found out i used pantene products. she gave me a tongue lashing when i mentioned it once. she said it is terrible for hair. but honestly it really works for my hair and i haven't noticed more breakage or damage because of it. she pushed redken on me and that stuff does absolutely nothing. and it costs more.
