If you are not on hormonal birth control such as the NuvaRing or the Pill, it's generally believed that all women ovulate on day 14 of their menstrual cycle. So if you got your period on the first of the month, you would ovulate 14 days later, on day 15. This rule is not necessarily correct for all women, and is based on the assumption that a woman's body follows a perfect 28-day cycle. We know this is not true for all women, and since ovulation can be delayed due to many reasons, including stress, this myth of Day 14 can cause many unwanted pregnancies.

How do you know when you're ovulating? To find out read more.
When an egg is released from your ovary, you'll notice a change in your cervical mucus. It will be very wet and have a clear, egg-white look and consistency. Your body creates this so sperm can swim easier and reach your precious egg. You may also notice mild cramping, breast tenderness, bloating, and an increased sex drive. Here's another cool thing — if you take your temperature every morning as soon as you wake up, you'll see a slight increase in temperature when you ovulate. Your cervix also changes position. It rises and softens when you're ovulating, due to the increase of estrogen in your body.
Since your cycle can be shorter or longer than 28 days, you can ovulate anywhere from day 10 to 18 of your cycle. You should also know that the day you ovulate is not the only day you can get pregnant. Since sperm can live up to five days inside you, you're actually fertile for about 11 days of your cycle.
Dear's advice: If you're trying to avoid getting pregnant, use a consistent and effective form of birth control and don't follow the Day 14 rule.

While spending the past two years trying to get pregnant (even though I don't really want kids - the husband does), I have become an EXPERT on ovulation, because I have had to track it with test kits, a Basal Body Thermometer and symptoms.
I definitely get the ovulation cramps... They usually occur on the side you are ovulating from... And typically switch every month. (So, this month it was on the right side. Next month it will probably on the left.")
1"this myth of Day 14 can cause many unwanted pregnancies."
Or merely unexpected ones.
I conceived this time on day 5 of my cycle. We use NFP but I wasn't paying any attention to my signs.
2Brings me back to fond memories of health class...
3.....but I am sure if you're on the pill this doesn't mean anything...
4That's what I was thinking ashcwebb...

This is very true.. just ask my Daughter.
I was charting in an effort to get myself hormone free. We had sex 5 days before my Ov date and nine, well- ten really, months later here came my daughter. We've never used natural methods since.
6I get cramps when I ovulate but they feel different than period cramps. I could never use NFP because I'm way too fertile!!
7I just got engaged and 2 weeks later found out I'm preggers! When it rains it pours I guess! Regardless, we're so happy and doing things a bit out of order but will enjoy it all!
I'd never been pregnant before so thought I was okay.... little did I know... the bean's a growin'!
8Congrats maddie! I took a HPT this morning, and it came back positive. Just waiting for the results of the blood test.
9Yea!! Very exciting Jimmalou!! I was SHOCKED but now that it's sunk in I'm SO excited!!
10I learned about all of this is Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I highly recommend this book if you plan on doing the Fertility Awareness Method (aka NFP). I've been doing this for over a year now and no kids yet (which is how we want it)
11congrats to both jimmalou and maddie!!! i wish you both the best!
12I wish it were that easy.
13i am wayyyyy too fertile for NFP. i mean there is no way i could even consider it. my body is so on point i have never been late even one day. i know when i am ovulating because it's an annoying uncomfortableness in my right side. comes and goes. sometimes for days. always on day 15. I know my body but there is no way I am risking it!~
14Congrats Maddiemay and Jimmalou1978
15I have never felt ovulating cramps. I've been tracking my periods too, but for the opposite reason, we can't seem to get pregnant, we have been trying for about a year, it makes me sad to think about it...I dunno what to do, i think its time to see the doc.
16I use the NFP method, it's worked for 6 months. I know that if I get my period before or after a certain day then it's not going to work. But it's always accurate. We are careful. I can't handle hormonal birth control.
17i do pills & he does condoms so we are kid free
