I came back from Thanksgiving break and almost everyone in my office was complaining that they're sick. Since Winter is officially here, we all have to do everything in our power to stay healthy, so here are some general tips to prevent catching the common cold.

- Keep your desk at work clean and disinfect your phone on a regular basis.
- Wash your hands at least seven times a day (studies show that you're four times less likely to develop a cold if you do) with antibacterial soap.
- Don't share drinks or lipstick with your friends and keep a small container of hand sanitizer in your purse so you can disinfect your hands after opening doors, using ATMs, or even riding the elevator.
- Stay hydrated and load up on fruits and vegetables.
- Although the holidays can be a stressful time for most, try to keep it all relative as stress wreaks havoc on your immune system.
- If you're already feeling under the weather, listen to your body and rest. Take hot showers and let the steam clear your nasal passages, load up on vitamin C, zinc, and water and remember that mom's chicken noodle soup really is a miracle worker!
I hope these tips help, and remember to stay bundled up out there!

Zicam. Zicam. ZICAM!!
1too late!! already got the sniffles!
2I agree. Zicam is great!
3I use it with a combo of Airborne, Halls cough drops & nyquil if necessary.
Out damn cold!
Hand santizer and daily multi-vitamins are the BEST and work like a charm
4lady-T, start Zicaming/Airborneing it now. You can do it anytime during the cold and it'll shorten the intensity and duration.
Multivitamins always make me more vulnerable to colds and illness. I've never figured out why.
5Vitamin C supplements, Airbone, warm lemonade, and hand sanitizer.
6I take knock-off airborne, and it works wonders. a friend says there is no point in taking it once you are sick, NOT TRUE!! if I buy it and take it after I am already sick, I feel exponentially better in a day or two.
7And peppermint herbal tea clears me out really well, too.
The alka seltzer for cold and flu that fizzes in water is the best cold medicine ever. I buy the oes for day and night. I'm so glad I finally found the one thing that REALLY helps me get rid of my cold! The only downside is it makes you drowsy but man you sleep so good and feel so much better! It works instantly!
8I dont know why but I ALWAYS feel grossed out when I touch the railing on an escalater. I try not to.
So.. I've heard a lot about Zicam, lol. Keeping that in mind.
9lemuse20 - you are RIGHT ON target! The railing on an escalator may be the germiest thing I can think of. If you can avoid holding on to it, do it.
10Word, Greggie. Those Zicam things work wonders!
11*Although I have to say the nasal swabs are so much better than the zicam orange quick-dissolve tabs. those tablet things are just plain disgusting.
12I'll only use the swabs. I tried the spray once and holy crap that was awful. I'd rather have a cold.
Even my kids know exactly how to use them.
13Great tips. I have another idea to toss out: My fiance thinks I'm neurotic, but if I have to rub my nose or eyes, I always use my knuckle instead of my fingers. There have to be fewer germs on my knuckles than my fingertips!
14Not to quibble, but it's actually not officially winter until December 22nd.
15ditto, marci!
16I need every tip I can use on preventing colds. I'm one of those people who catches them so easily. I hate it!!!
17I read your article and enjoyed all the tips mentioned to preventing and treating the common cold. There are also alternatives to the methods listed above such as nasal irrigation. I just recently had a terrible cold and went to my doctor who recommended Nasopure, which the company labels as the modern neti. I used it and found it very helpful. After just 3 days of use I felt much better and had a clear nose. I recommend it to anyone with allergies, a cold, reoccurring sinus infections, or just in search of a clearer nose. The website www.nasopure.com is very informative too.
