Cutting your long hair can be a life changing decision, so make sure you're 100 percent sure before you hack off your locks. For some easy tips to make sure you're ready, click here to read more
- Make sure you haven't just broken up with your boyfriend, found out you're pregnant, moved to a new city, or had a death in your family before you drastically change your look.
- If you have ever had short hair before, think back honestly about how you liked your look.
- One major concern some women have about cutting their hair short is thinking their face will look fat so if you have concerns about your weight, don't do it!
- To see how you might look with the short 'do before actually cutting your hair, take a Polaroid picture of yourself against a black background. Use a black Sharpie and draw over your hair to where you would like to cut it, almost like you're erasing it, and see how you look! It's the best way to experiment with your hair without actually cutting it.
- Flip through magazines and look for cuts you like on models with a similar shaped face as yours and bring your tears to the salon to show your stylist.
- Don't go to a new stylist if you are making a major change to your hair. Trust your regular stylist to give his or her honest opinion as to if your idea will look good on you and if it will work with your kind of hair.
- It's always fun to take chances and change up your look so keep in mind that even if you don't like your haircut, it will grow back.
I hope you find these tips helpful. If you are cutting over 10 inches of hair at a time, there is a wonderful non-profit organization called Locks of Love that accepts hair donations to make hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any kind of diagnosis. eeeeek.. i dont think i could ever go short.. i would feel so lost!
1Yes, you really need to think about it!
2I went from boob-length hair to Keria Knightly's short pixie cut! It was a HUGE change and it took a lot of getting use to, but finally like 2 1/2 years later it is grown a lot
I recently cut off 12 inches in what seems to be a sort-of-thought-out whim. I had been growing my hair to donate, and my friend/stylist mentioned it was time. After a few days of thinking about it, I went for it. There are days that I miss my wavy strawberry blonde locks but every time I do, I think of some little girl who gets to have them.
3I am currently withstanding the agony of my too long hair so I can donate to Locks of Love again. I would encourage anyone looking for a change to think about doing the same.
I have one thing to add to the list. Know that having short hair doesn't always mean getting ready will be faster. Some shorter cuts take the same amount of time to style, some cut the time in half, and some add a lot time to your morning routine.
4I hate cutting my hair. Although, for the longest time i had a bob. Now, the longer the better.
5I had short hair for a few years, ranging from a Betty Boop do to inch long spikes. It was a lot of fun, and was different from the other girls in my school. But, 4 years later, my hair is finally past my shoulders again, and I'm really enjoying my longer hair. It takes longer to wash and dry, but really, it's easier to care for. It just takes a pony tail or a simple bun if I'm lazy, or I can fiddle with it for as long as I want. With short hair, I either had to do it every morning, or wear a hat all day, which is really kind of a pain.
6Locks of Love receives more hair that they actually use to make wigs for cancer patients.
Locks of Love SELLS the suplus hair for CASH! How much are they selling the hair for? In 2005, they sold $352,401 of hair!
Most of the hair donated does not end up on a child's head. It ends up being sold to commercial wigmakers.
Add on the fact, that women who spend years growing out gorgeous, beautiful hair get nagged by rude idiots to cut it off and donate to this scam charity. Do people with nice shoes get hounded to donate them to shoeless orphans? Yet for some reason, so many people get duped into donating their hair to this organization. With all the publicity surrounding the people who donate hair, why do we never see the cancer-stricken children who receive the hair?
If you really want to help people with cancer, donate to the American Cancer Society.
7I like the polaroid tip!! Cheaper than digital imaging!
8This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.....On all of those Make-over TV shows...where the women FREAK out about cutting off their hair. I can't stand to see people so insecure that they have to have long hair.
I know that this isn't the case with everyone that has long hair...but sometimes it is. Sometimes, long hair is NOT the best look
9k8rckstr, i saw that comment on another blog and that seems to be based on half-truths and speculation. the numbers are correct, but if that money is used to offset costs, then why is that bad? people don't donate wig-making skills all the time! you have to pay for them!
i had cancer. i had to wear a wig so i understand how crappy it is to not have hair as a child. i've donated to Locks of Love and the organization i work for benefits from LoL so i have trouble believing something that malicious.
10I wouldn't call it malicious...as its not exactly a secret
11I cut off my hair and donated it to the Canadian Cancer Society, ensuring that it would be used as it was intended.
um, k8 your post was merely re-stating what someone else stated on a blog. Bad Hair Day right? While some of what you stated has merit, there are other facts that suggests that Locks of Love is a worthy charity. If someone wants to donate, there are many organizations to chose from if they are concerned about Locks of Love.
12I haven't any knowledge of that blog, my apologies
13However, as a side note, I'd like to let people know about Pantene Beautiful Lengths... same idea as locks of love, however it is recognized by the Canadian Cancer Society

I've had short hairstyles a couple of times through my life. Although they looked great i will always prefer my long hair.
14k8 I think that it's great that you feel incredibly stong about this topic and I commend you for donating your hair to someone who needs it. Also, thanks for posting about another organiztion...I will look in to it.
However, your original post is a word for word copy of a post on Bad Hair Day. (I checked it out again just to be sure.) I don't care if you or anyone else references another site...just give credit where credit is due.
Now I will let the topic die.
15One of my closest and oldest friends passed away a year ago this past september from ovarian cancer. She had lost all of her hair from the chemo and Locks of Love gave her a beautiful wig. She loved it.
16bfly1133 - I tried to post the link where i got the quote from at the bottom (it wasn't originally from a Sugar site), however it wasn't posted for some reason... just so you dont think im attempting to plagiarize...that wasn't my intention
17topic dropped...haha
I have had long hair since i was in grade 2 and in my grade 8 year i said i would cut my hair for cancer if it grew enough by grade 9. so this past June, when it was time to cut, i was nervous as ever - i didn't know what it would look like but i ended up cutting off more than a foot of hair - somewhere between 1 and 2 feet - enough to make upto 3/4 wigs depending on size - and am happy that i did it. I think that if you are cutting off alot, its a great thing to donate to Locks of Love; I'm happy I did
and plan to do it again this upcoming June.
18I used to have short hair, I mean really short and I have been growing it out since 2002. I have thought about cutting it short again to a bob, but I always talk myself out of it and remember my goal to get it to go to my waist. I hope that I could grow it out long enough that when I do cut it, I can send it to Locks of Love.
19i could never cut my hair off!
20how insecure are you about yourself and your self-image if you can't bring yourself to cut your hair? IT'S JUST HAIR. Have fun with it! Streak it, curl it, cut it, put some pink in it or a funky purple or back to brown. Hair is SUPPOSE to be messed with! If all else fails, wear a cool hat or bandana...accessorize. Hair will ALWAYS grow back and you'll always look good.
21Thanks erratic!! I'm so glad someone else thinks the way I do about hair.
22I just cut my hair into a dramatic a-line bob with bangs and it's A LOT shorter than I expected! Good thing I'm okay with it.
23and a good thing too - my hair grows super quick!
24k8 ~
25I really wish I knew about Locks of Love when I cut off all my hair.
26I had hair up to my lower back and after my grandma passed away I cut it up to my ears and dyed my gorgeous blonde hair dark brown (borderline black) I'll never be sure why I made such a drastic decision. It took two years to get my natural color back. It still hasn't grown back much, it's only up to my shoulders. I'm considering extensions. A little change it great, too much might give you regrets.
27I have had short hair for most of my life and would freak out if I had to grow it out. I do not know what to do with it. I laugh when people say their hair is so short when it is a bob that is not short my hair is short. Mia Farrow Rosemary's Baby short.
28Wow I just cut off my hair a couple of months ago. It was all the way to my butt. I layered it and cut it to boob length and I'm now happy about it even though I freaked when I got it cut. I kept thinking it was too short!
29I cut my hair 2 days after my wedding. I waited because I didn't want to chance hating it for my wedding. It was mid-back and now it is a super short pixie and I LOVE IT!!!! So does my husband (who actually cut off my ponytail...lol...)
30I have been debating this for months!
31I want to chop it off but I'm being a chicken!
My husband is against me cutting it short.
What to do...
ive been wanting to cut my hair short for a while, but i dont think i can do it!!!
32I donated 10 inches a few weeks ago, and I love my new short look!!! I got some cute bangs cut too
33I just cut off about 8 inches and i honestly didn't even bat an eye. I think i was just that sick of my long hair.
34I used to have very long hair -- hip-length and just about the same blonde color as that model's. It was damaged from repeated dying and hard to maintain on a daily basis. But when it was styled into curls or given a good blowout, it was outrageously gorgeous and eye-catching. I finally couldn't stand the daily upkeep anymore and cut it to my shoulders so I could grow it out in a darker and healthier shade. I suppose it needed to be done, but the short hair was even harder to style, and I didn't feel like myself. It wasn't until the past month or two when my hair reached waist-length that I've started to feel like myself again.
35no love lost K8. you're one of my fav people on here!
36WoOo HoOo!!!
hehe
37Who cares where K8 got the information from? Most of us have read or heard about the way LOL has to deal with all of the hair. The news story I saw made it seem like they now overwhelmed with it. I agree with K8. There are other cancer organizations out there that could use the hair or the $$.
K8, you're right about people commenting on the long hair. On of my girlfriends had super long & thick hair. She constantly had strangers coming up to her, touching her hair & telling her she should donate it to LOL. She got so tired of it, she had it cut to above shoulder length & hasn't regretted it since.
I got a very short hair style once (cut from very long). I was in 7th grade, as thin as a board, & not allowed to wear makeup. I looked like a boy after that cut. It was so traumatic, I haven't been able to do it since & that was a long time ago! Now, I just keep the length to the bottom of my shoulder blades.
38oops....meant to say "they are now"...not "they now"...!!
...also meant to say "One of my girlfriends"...not "On of"...
I need to get a grip today!
39I just got 10 inches chopped off (yesterday!) and I could not be more relieved to be rid of all that long, waist length dead hair. It's one thing to be attached to the length...but I'd rather have hair that's short and healthy rather than overly long and dead!
40I like the Polaroid tip, but I have black hair, so I don't know if the black Sharpie and background motif would work. I might look bald! But maybe a red Sharpie and background could work?
41I cut off 15 inches just as summer started... I don't regret it, the short cut is soooo much easier to handle, but I kinda miss the length too... my hair was pretty when it was long. Oh well, it'll grow back. =)
I still mean to donate my hair but so far it's still just sitting in a baggie in my bathroom. =P
42I recommend trying the polaroid thing or using photoshop, which I did. It helps a lot!
43I like my hair to be natural, I don't dye it or do much at all with it. I got a big haircut last year and I loved it, but I like the feeling of long hair better
44Last Christmas I was devastated by someone I loved, and about a week after I went to the hairdresser (I was already getting a hair cut soon anyways) and told them to chop it off. They took ten inches off and it was still below my shoulders quite a bit so yeah, it was very long and very much a big step.
It needed to be done, though, to get rid of the lifeless, be reborn, etc. was a healthy start to the next part of my life; at least that's how I saw it. I also drew a moderate amount of satisfaction that the guy, when he saw my hair, knew why I had done it. Over and done.
All that said, I'm still glad my hair is growing back =) I do miss the long hair.
45I'm debating on hacking off my GORGEOUS hair, its nearly down to my butt *bout 4 inches shy*, i dunno i've been growing it almost 4 years..it's grown about a foot...or close to...dunno...its a P.I.T.A. straighten every day i figure i go short..it'd be easier to straighten, instead of taking an hour, it'd take about 5-10 minutes..even as thick as it is..and its naturally wavy and curly..
