Today is the 18th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Since I grew up in San Francisco, I will never forget that 7.1 quake as long as I live, and ever since 1989, I have a severe fear of natural disasters. Anyway you slice it, they are terrifying. I think the worst part is not knowing what's in store for you and your loved ones and not knowing when they will end or what's coming next. We hear about tornados, hurricanes, tsunamis, and avalanches all the time, but ladies, do tell, what natural disaster do you fear the most?

I would have to say hurricanes. I live in Houston, texas so thats what we watch out for the most.
1Earthquakes are big here in CA. Apparently, we live right on the Hayward fault, and my husband says that we're long overdue for another big earthquake...
But then when an earthquake finally does come, I'm calm...just get my son to safety first, then myself and my husband.
2And this is a completely different topic, but...why do airplane staff tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself BEFORE you put one on your child? I've never been able to figure that out.
3Angel- they probably tell you that so that you don't pass out firt and your kids left there not knowing what to do where as if your kid passes out and you have your mask on, you can still do something for them.
Anywho, I live in Houston, TX also and though I don't live near any areas that flood, we had a major scare last year with Hurricane Rita. I walked into Wal-Mart and there was no water and barely and cans of soup or anything in general. Very scary not to be able to find water anywhere.
4My hubby: Anything that has to do with Tsunami, or tidal wave that can cause the whole state/city to go under water.
Me:Volcanoes erupting
But we live in Portland Oregon and so far, we have nothing big happening here, yayy.
5Well we can't really get a lot fo natural disasters here water-wise...
6But I would say some great fire or an avalnache...avalanches are so scary...and so loud...like giant killers...
They scare the crap outta me, I lost someone dear to me in one and now I can barely get myself to go out on the ski hill again.
"And this is a completely different topic, but...why do airplane staff tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself BEFORE you put one on your child?"
Cymone is right - it's so you don't pass out while trying to get one on your child. You can get yours on immediately without endangering our child, but if you put your child's on first and have to struggle with them, your risks of passing out increase greatly.
I don't particularly "fear" any natural disaster. I'm a freak who enjoys most earthquakes. (Most
) But I think an actual impending tsunami might freak me out.
7I dont really fear any big natural disasters. I live in San Antonio so we dont really see much of anything besides floods. So I guess the floods frighten me?
8i've lived on the east coast all my life, more specifically long island and i've always feared the whole tsunami and hurricane thing. the idea of being swallowed up by water is absolutely terrifying to me!
9The only natural threat where I live (Holland) is dams breaking and land overflowing, but that hasn't happened in my lifetime. I wouldn't much fancy being near an errupting volcano or in the midst of a forest fire, there's little hope of escaping from those alive and in good health. Stuff can be replaced.
10I live in florida so its hurricanes for me and they are no fun.
11they are scary and after it passes we're left with no electricity or hot water for days... unless you have a generator of course.
I lived in San Jose when the earthquake hit. It didn't bother me that much, I was younger, and my dad was able to call right away from his office and let us know he was okay.
It's not a natural disaster, but I fear death from a plane going down or from burning to death or drowning or suffocating to death.
12Natural disasters aren't really prevalent where I live. But my house burning down scares me so I'll go with fire.
13if always kind of lived in areas where the worst types of weather we had gotten were blizzards-- but as a general thing-- probably really bad hurricanes just because i'd be afraid that i'd go stir crazy and putting myself in potential danger just to try and entertain myself. or that i'd run out of food or something
14my fear with any natural disaster is that i won't be able to get to my kids. that freaks me out. i lived in houston when it flooded, lived in california most of the rest of my life, so i've been through earth quakes. doesn't really matter to me what the disaster is as long as i can have my kids with me and know that they are "okay". if something happens and i can't be with them that will ne far worse than than what ever else is going on.
15I live near the coast of NC and we usually get hit hard by hurricanes but it's not that scary. But a tornado is really scary because you can't really watch them coming and evacuate. They are pretty much all of a sudden here it comes, find a safe place.
16It's a tie between flood and tornado.
17I live an hour south of San Francisco so I also fear earthquakes! Plus my house is right on the beach, so I'm scared of tsunamis now too!
18I live in Houston, Tx and we pretty much get the hurricanes here. I hate storms, they freak me out!
19i know earthquakes so that dosent scare me........tornados, hurricanes & tsunamis scare the sh*t out of me. i have nightmairs about that!
20All of them. I felt an earthquake once, and while it wasn't one on a grand scale (thankfully!), I thought it was really cool. It was like someone had the bass control up too high on the stereo.
But I remember hearing about this earthquake when I was 7 years old too, and growing up in MA, it scared me even to this day.
21Tornado. I live in Tornado Alley, so it's understandable.
22Earthquakes definetly....I live in central america and there are always minor earthquakes over here. Like they're more like little shakes. We get them almost every 35 years, and the last one was terrible and completely destroyed the whole city. So def earthquakes, I hope to god I never go trough one of those.
23I live in a building so, Earthquakes, Tsunamis and as silly as it might sound, i would hate a disease that resembled the rage virus from 28 days later.
I'd go bat bleep.
24Drug-resistant bacteria. They're natural, and they're a disaster waiting to happen. You can avoid earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes by choosing where you live and heeding evacuation warnings. You can't avoid diseases unless you hole up in an air-tight box.
25Lovelylei, I know what you mean about FL. A whole house generator is a must in our neighborhood, if you can swing it. We have so many trees in our area. We are always one of the last sections in town to get electricity back. Unfortunately, we only have a regular generator, but I'm not complaining. It's better than not having one at all. It keeps us from losing everything in our freezers.
I don't know if I could pick one that I fear the most. They all, pretty much, could have the same terrible end results & they are all pretty terrifying to me.
26anything with water overflooding like tsunamis, very bad hurricanes
27where i am now, flooding and pretty soon, blizzards. during the warm monthes i fear for my family in tornado alley!
28Haha I have lived through volcanoes exploding, water floods, earthquakes and hurricanes!
29I used to live in Florida and we went through Hurricane Ivan, which was out shadowed by Katrina even though it was the same strength. My husband and I stayed about 8 miles inland and it was the scariest thing I have ever been through. I have nightmares about the noise and wind still. My parents lived on the water, but left and went out of state. To remember what their damaged house looked like brings me to tears. After about about 3 days without running water and no electricty and ater we finally tracked down gas (waited in line for 5 hours) my husband and I joined my parents. Needless to say....we stayed in Montgomery for a while since we didn't have electricity for almost 2 weeks and no running water for a week. Everything is fine now
And my parents house was built back even more beautiful!
30TORNADO! I went to school in Iowa and two years ago five of them hit the town where I went to school. If was terrible, my building got hit and my church across the street was demolished and sadly it was from the 1800's and beautiful. It was the scariest thing I've ever been through, not to mention my apartment was destroyed and I had to walk the streets to try and find my belongings through the mess.
31Hurricanes! but i have NEVER been in a natural disaster so...
32Hurricanes because I live in Houston. I'm terrified of tornadoes, though; there's no warning!
33i'm scared of ALL natural disasters....BUT since I live in Oklahoma I'm probably most afraid of tornadoes. They can be devastating. I'm also afraid of floods, which has been happening her a lot lately.
34My fears are decided by location.
35Cali = earthquakes. Southeast = hurricanes.
I'd have to say anything with water, the scariest thing would be it happening and me not holding my kids or wondering if their okay. That would just kill me.
36I grew up in NJ (!) and I remember being so afraid of tornadoes because of the movie 'Twister.' I was so scared that a tornado was going to come and sweep us all away! But now, I'm not that scared of any natural disasters...I live in NC now and we never really get the full brunt of hurricanes just a bunch of rain...
37I have never really been through anything too terrible, but I would be most afraid of tornados. They come every once in a great while, I have never seen one touch down where I live though. I have several family members who live in tornado areas and have had one touch down and that scares me too.
38Well I've had almost all of the natural disasters you could think of...
Typhoons/Hurricanes in Caribean Islands when I was a kid, and in Japan now
39Earthquakes in Japan
Volcano in Caribean Islands (big one distroyed the entire island next to mine when I was there... you could see the flames and all from my house)
We sometimes have Tsunamis alerts here in Japan (the most recent was one month ago after a big Earthquake near New Zealand) but luckily I've never lived one... I live about 50 m from the sea, so I guess my town would be pretty damaged if a tsunami happened...
I have worrying problems, it doesn't run in my family but it's just that way. I live in WI and tornadoes don't happen often but they terrorize me the most. when I went up north about 3 years ago there was this big thunderstorm. Our little shelter( we were in a cottage with my cousins.)blew out of the ground, into the air and into the lake. One of my older cousins said (my parents were out eating with my aunts and uncles)that your parents are going to die and my sister threw up. right after that there was a lightning bolt and we all screamed. It was like 2 miles away. the lights were already out and we were screaming our heads off. When I was a bay and my parents were building our house a tornado came and ruined our garage. Im always scared. now i look up tornados on the internet and watch the weather. Yah I'm strange
40i live in the south and tornadoes are bad here we just had one earlier today in a town not 10 minutes from here....tornadoes scare me
41Well I live in California so the only natural disaster that really affects me is earthquakes, which are especially scary since we can't exactly predict when they will happen.
42yah everyone has a fear so its fine to be afraid of tornadoes like me tornadoes are hard to predict i kinda want to stop talking about it
43I don't really have a fear for either of them.
44definitely earthquakes! that happens in my country a lot like everyday in most parts of country, that's why i wake up several times every night,
45my best friends all family members parents sisters and brothers died in Bam 2003 earthquake when she was staying with her boyfriend in another city, i still cannot sleep at nights, her boyfriend married her because she had no where to go
I don't really know what natural disaster I fear the most.. Tornadoes don't really bother me so much, we get them a lot in the south. The last one I remember hit the town next to ours, about 15 minutes away. I don't really live near any water so flooding isn't an issue.. also I don't live near the coast so hurricanes are just thunderstorms by the time they reach here. Earthquakes seem like they would be pretty terrifying.. and volcanoes if you lived close enough to them!
46when i was a child growing up in Illinois it was Tornados. Living in Florida now, its hurricanes. But they are a mixed blessing to me because i work for the state of florida dept of health and we are required to work shelters and we have the opportunity to go on deployment. THAT means extra money for me, which is awesome.
47Tornados..I've had dreams where I'm looking out of huge window and can see about 6 tornados going on at once..revelation..maybe? Also Tsunami's. I have recurring dreams of those as well. Just seeing the ocean pulling away and then a huge wave climbing up to more than 50 stories get ready to plummet me is not cool! Yeah, those 2 freak me out the most. Annnndd...I live in Brooklyn, NY - we had a tornado not too long ago pass right through my neigborhood..yeah..I said it..Brooklyn.
48Tornado's. Even though we don't get them where I live, ever. Or, not enough for my fear of them to be rational by any stretch of the imagination.
49Tsunami or tidal wave of some sort...I live in NZ so our contry would pretty much be wiped out.
