Hey, if the characters in the show are over age, they can do what they like. If the episode is such an issue the network can just air it Post-Watershed, and with a warning. Meaning if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it.

The PTC is way too hypersensitive. It's a parent's responsibility to make sure their kids don't watch shows with blow, booze, and threesomes. Granted Gossip Girl is total trash, but that's what makes it fun. It's clearly not appropriate for younger viewers, and the warning is there for a reason. Can't wait for Monday night's episode!

I'm with Autumns Eleg, it's not the networks or the PTC's job to monitor our children's viewing habits. It's our job as parents to do that.

I'll also add that many parents don't even want to consider that this could be used as a tool or catalyst for discussing such topics with their children. I personally don't let my children watch this show, but I have age appropriate conversations about these topics with my children anyway.

I'm so tired of parents blaming the issues concerning our children and teens on other people/institutions. Stop expecting others to raise your children, stop blaming others for your children's choices and/or mistakes. Take a good, hard, honest look at yourself and your own habits before pointing the finger at others, and take your head out of the sand.

I don't agree with censoring and I think this should air, but i also think people should really think about adult content.

While I totally agree, think about this: If that's the only rule governing tv shows, what happens when every single tv show is blow and threesomes? Are you supposed to tell a teenager..sorry, after you graduate from Nick Jr, you don't get to watch tv again until you're 18. It's just like those toys and things that cross the line, if everything is eventually a kids stripper pole, what then? I think it's a fine line.

If you don't want your kids to watch it, don't let them watch it. Really is that simple.

The PTC is a conservative censorship group. They can kiss my badonkadonk. I have no desire to pretend to protect children in order to serve a bunch of conservatives frankly childish need to shield themselves from reality.

Ever read the books? I have, and it's the same nonsense. Nate is smoking pot while Serena is trying to seduce him to get back a Blair. They sell those at the freaking grocery store. Give me a break.

Oh come on! "Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite.." As soon as parents hear that intro, they should know their kid isn't watching Veggie Tales. As a parent, it's your responsibility to know what kind of shows your kid is watching and it's obvious that Gossip Girl doesn't seek out to reinforce Puritan values. And if the viewers are in high school, honestly, they're exposed to this sort of thing in real life. Maybe they're not able to buy drinks in a hotel bar but back in my high school days, people put Vodka in their Sprite, smoked weed behind the back building during assemblies and threw ragers on weekends. It's not like their high school students are protected from the decline in morality if Gossip Girl gets censored - this stuff is all around them anyway. If part of the audience getting corrupted by this show is 11-13... well, maybe they'll just get a taste of the truth a bit earlier...
It all comes down to responsibility. The show is rated TV-14 in quite a few episodes and that should be enough of a hint that your 3rd grader is a little young to watch this. Parents need to stop whining and do their damn jobs as parents. And perhaps Gossip Girl would be better off keeping the ~scandalous~ scenes out of promos so they don't rile up the parents.

If you think it's so awful, don't watch it. It's a freakin' threesome for god's sake. It's not like they're advocating murder.

i've liked gg since the beginning but haven't been catching it lately.. Been kinda dull.

thanks ptc for letting me know that I should watch this week's episode! I'm 21 yrs old and I'm not any of your kids (thanks goodness!), so I get to enjoy whatever type of tv I want.

Um, I don't think it's about sheltering or overprotecting kids. It's about decency...not knocking threesomes I guess (I don't know how I feel about them) but where do you draw the line?

I get the costume designer's point but I don't think I agree with the blow and booze either but I'm sure that started once upon a time just like the threesome controversy for this show, and now look, it's "normal."

I would get into GG but I think they try too hard to be interesting/provocative and that highlights that the show is sort of weak. So I'll see an episode and it sucks me in a little or it's fun and then you hear about something like this and they or the groups that protest it drum up publicity and stuff and it makes me disinterested in the show and I think some people are dumb enough to enjoy the drivel.

Sigh.

I've never seen Gossip Girl, and I am not pro-censorship by any means, but this comment struck me as a bit odd:

Actually, I find it really sad that all American high school kids are exposed to booze, crack, and threesomes as underage teenagers, if that's true. Definitely wasn't true of me, but I don't doubt there were kids at my high school who were aware of these things.

But the real issue to me is that from everything I've heard (and if I'm wrong, ignore me, because I haven't seen the show), the kids on Gossip Girl do these things without suffering much in the way of consequences. Kids in high schools that aren't made for TV, on the other hand, can suffer pretty serious consequences from these things.

I don't really understand why TV shows need too go so far out of their way to push the envelope for what can be shown on prime time TV when, say, a lot of concerned parents who monitor their children's viewing might be at work. Or their kids might watch it at friends' houses. I think the idea that it's just the parents' responsibility and there's no responsibility for the network is simplistic at best. If this was a show about adults that was on cable, no problem. But this show started, at least, to be about high schoolers. Of course they have young viewers. Why don't they have any responsibilities at all to them?

So show it, fine - if it's too racy, they'll get slapped with FCC fines. But I don't think there's anything wrong with having a conversation about whether the producers of these shows have responsibilities to their viewers if their audience is underage.

I'm torn on this. I don't believe in censorship, yet as Anonymous said, I'm all for decency. After all, we're not animals. We're supposed to use discernment. I also think that in this day and age it seems like a lot of parents aren't wanting to do their job--they're just looking for someone to blame when their child catches something on tv that they shouldn't.

Hopefully it's 2 guys one girl, with a nice boy on boy makeout sesh.. that will really get their panties in a bunch.
