I typically avert my eyes when graphic scenes flash across my television screen, so it boggles my mind that violence is such a celebrated form of entertainment. A new report from the Parents Television Council suggests that the prevalence of violence on TV is getting even more disturbing. The report reveals that violence against women and teen girls is up 120 percent, while violence shown on television general has raised by only two percent in recent years.
Questions remain about the conservative group's study. For example, it doesn't precisely define what it considers "violence." Still, the results cannot be completely ignored. Showing more examples of violence against women could desensitize viewers and make it appear more acceptable.
The Parents Television Council is calling for more government regulation against such violence on TV. Do you support that, or should viewers censor what they watch themselves?

That's why i watch shows like Mercy that focus on women being strong and hard working, im sooo tired of watching them be belittled on television. If you haven't seen Mercy which is a fabulous show, Bravo is playing the first 4 episodes this Saturday at 8 am.

2Is violence against women on TV somehow worse than violence against men? If anything, violence against men is more glorified and incidents of violence against women are supposed to be more shocking and upsetting.
3I'm so with you on that Tres. I hate violence in TV and movies, as I don't see how hurting/killing people is entertaining. But, I don't favor censorship, so I just censor my TV programs myself.
4Good point Chouette. I also think that people are capable of deciding for themselves whether they want to tune into a show that might involve some violence.
5Years ago, Oprah said she hardly watches TV because she was so tired of seeing violence against women. She thought it brought bad energy into her life while simultaneously glamorizing violence. I agree. I'll have to look up this Mercy show — never heard of it. Thanks for the rec!

6I was thinking about this the other day.. lol. All of the shows my parents seem to like are about death and violence, mostly the crime stories types, really makes you wonder. They watch like 6 different types of the same exact show, and I will admit that I like Bones myself. I don't think tv is to blame for any ones actions, but i do believe that it glamorizes horrible crimes and desensitizes the viewer to them.
7I suppose we need some sort of government limits, since the tv industry just keeps serving up more and more violence against women. And studies show that viewing this type of programming can influence behavior.

9I agree with Chloe. I am not a supporter of censorship, so I censor my own viewing habits. If I don't like it I don't watch it.
10Gosh, I never really paid attention. I don't watch too much tv but one of my favorite shows is Dexter which is extremely violent/gory. It doesn't seem to favor violence towards women over men.
The other shows I watch don't really have too much violence (House, SYTYCD, and HGTV). I'm all for self censorship - I don't need somebody censoring shows for me - I'd like to make that decision.
11this is true. I dont watch tv shows because of this. The channels are 1. Crime 2. Crime against women 3. And some how interesting because its a "mystery".
