Sometimes empathy is the most powerful way of moving civil rights forward, which is why this PSA from 2005 is so effective. It depicts what it must feel like for gay people who are barred from legally marrying by showing a man walking from house to house asking strangers if can have his girlfriend's hand in marriage. Wow. (As of today, five states — New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa — have made gay marriage legal.)

Awesome, really to the point!
1This made me really sad. I've been an emotional basket case all week, and maybe it's Cat Power playing in the background... effective.
2Good stuff.
3Agree 100 percent, Tres. Disagree 0 percent.
4Isnt gay marriage legal in Iowa too now?
5Thanks, Malbells. You're right. Our source had the state represented on the map, but not in their list.
6Yes, but...some people believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, based on their religious beliefs. It isn't that they "hate gays", etc. I'm one of those people. Two of my closest friends are gay. I definitely believe that gay couples should have the benefits that married heterosexuals have--but that marriage specifically should be between a man and a woman.
7Marriage has civil significance, not just religious significance. Totally in support of a gay marriage.
8The origin of marriage was more my intent in my statement, Yogaforlife. Created by God, etc. Marriage as a civil union is just a man-made creation.
9There is evidence that "marriage" has been a part of the earliest societies, even before there was organized religions.
10Jayce,
There are some people that think blacks belong back in the cotton fields, based on their religious beliefs. I would submit to you that in my opinion, it doesn't mitigate the fact that you're relegating gays to second-class citizens. It doesn't make their prejudiced opinions any less Christian.
11Marriages between different races were once against the law - miscegenation laws - because of "being against God." There are still plenty of people out there who believe this - lots of them online.
History tells us that religion will attempt to prevent the current progresses of the day. Yesterday it was blacks marrying whites, whites marrying hispanics, now it's same sex marriage. No surprise.
