There's nothing wrong with complaining. It's cathartic and even fun when done right. But there's a difference between filing a legitimate grievance with the universe and a mindless whine. I do the latter when I'm nervous about having nothing to say — I just start complaining! About the day. The weather. The last time I was here, and how I wish I were there. It's as tedious as it is pointless, and, besides, don't complaints breed complaints?
Don't worry, the irony that I am whining as I write this is not lost on me, which is why I am impressed that two Double X editors have vowed to refrain from complaints for one month. Or to try, anyway. Admittedly, they're using a "loose interpretation" of complaining and will adjust the definition as they go, but they've asked friends, co-workers, and family members to call out their kvetching for the next month. Could you quit griping for that long?

I really have pretty much done away with the mindless complaints. life's too short. if something bugs me, I'll express it, and move on. I think its very healthy. you can't bottle things up all the time.
I rarely complain on any given month, I don't have a lot to complain about. I have caught myself on occasion complaining about a small something a student has done or someone has done that irritated me, but it hardly goes beyond that. I do believe that negative thoughts lead to more negative thoughts, and complaining leads to more complaining for some people.
I couldn't do that. I have to get some things that are bothering me off my chest after a long day. And as long as I don't start bawling, I think it can be productive to vent a bit.
I have learned not to complain about things that I can't control. Anything that I complain about that is under my control, I do what I can to make them better so I have less to complain about
It would be really tough. However, I would love to suggest this idea to some people... (::coughmomcough:
I'm with Tidalwave. My approach exactly.
Ha! I've tried it. I did break down and ranted to my best friend once, but meanwhile my relationships improved and I've made many new friends and acquaintances
Crazy coincidence, I had just recently decided I NEED to complain less. It's been difficult.
I've definitely learned to bite my tongue and not let the small stuff get to me, but it's been difficult for me not to complain about work right now with rumored layoffs coming soon.
I also made this realization just a few months ago. I have been limiting my complaining and feel a lot better about myself and the world.
I would give it a try... I *should* give it a try... I also find that when I can't think of anything to say, I just complain. But I'd have to define the difference between a complaint and an observation or a genuine concern.
I could try to but that means I would have to give up driving anywhere for a month as well because once behind the wheel the complaints come automatically when stupid people are in front of me who should not have a license. My main complaint is when people go slower then the posted speed limit and they are in the fast lane.
I couldn't, I whinge a helluva lot!
i would love to do this...i do complain A LOT and it's awful...complaining about my complaining...that's where i am right now...i applaud those that have successfully made the switch...i may start asking those around me to help by pointing out my whining as it occurs
