The German band Kraftwerk--from their look to their sound to their sense of humor--has had a huge role in what modern music looks and sounds like. Devo, Daft Punk, Air? Ambient, Techno, Electroclash? Impossible without Kraftwerk. Remember that they were formed in 1970, when the 60's "Flower Power" ethos was still in full bloom, and it's hard to imagine where a band that fetishizes robots, pocket calculators and the Autobahn could have come from.
