It's not uncommon to say children are a blessing, but Quiverfull (the name of a small movement among Christian Evangelicals) families take the belief very, very seriously. So much that they eschew all forms of birth control, even natural methods, and 10-children families have become the norm. Is it so there's enough love to go around? Partially. But more disconcertingly, it's because they believe the answer to America's "moral decay" is a return to pre-industrial revolution times when contraception was incompatible with Christianity, patriarchy reigned, children attended homeschools, and families were self-sufficient. And they — or their children — plan to lead the movement.
Despite a wide concern that Christianity is dying in the United States and Europe, Rev. James McDonald, the pastor at an Illinois church filled with Quiverfull families, is not worried about his numbers. "In denomination after denomination their children are leaving in mass exodus," McDonald said, "and this is a major, major problem, especially when most families only have two or three children."
"Only" two or three children? Is McDonald saying that, while other Christian denominations decline, they will rise? Are Quiverfull families trying another kind of "family planning"? Find out after the jump.
Sort of! Allan Carlson, head of the Howard Center for Family, Religion and Society argues that a shortage of children threatens the world economy and Quiverfull families are intentionally creating large families to secure their future. He said, "There is a sense in which these intentionally created large families are seeing themselves as the . . . foundation of a counterculture, which could grow, and should grow."
What do you think about the Quiverfull strategy?

1"hey, who cares if there are already about a billion more people on the planet than it can support?"
recklessly making tons of american babies is only going to further harm the chances of survival for the millions of kids being born in places where birth control isn't available... that's not very christian of them at all!
2The Duggars are "quiverfull" members.
3I think this is a really sexist idea. The reality is, most women with 10 children are going to be mothers and little else. It will devastate their body and their level of happiness. What a horrible idea.
4This may be taking things a little too far. Your children should not be bred merely as political pawns. They have a will too.
5This would make a great plot for a horror film.
6This is wrong on so many levels! No consideration for the women (partriachal reign) - women are not like dogs, you can just expect them to keep popping out babies! The havoc this must create on the woman's body and mental health.
No consideration for the environment and the fact that as a species, we are grossly overpopulated as it is - the last thing we need is for people to start thinking we need to have 10+ children for each family. The waste of all the natural resources it will take to raise that many more kids.
And pink-elephant I agree! You don't have children so that you can brainwash them to be your political pawns when they grow up! Seriously? These are the same families that don't believe their children should live their own lives - they will decide how their children live their lives when they are adults. This is one of the dumbest idea ever! Because we don't like how society is NOW, we'll breed like rabbits and hope that our children outnumber all other groups in the FUTURE and can control FUTURE society to match our CURRENT beliefs.
UGH - this reminds me of all those 90 year old conservatives who don't want to let the younger generations make become the new leaders and decision makers - they can't handle that they are no longer calling the shots.
I think we need to consider a law that limits family size and has mandatory sterilization for people who purposely mass reproduce above the set limit.
7This reminds me of the eight-year-old in Edward Norton's documentary who was on the phone schilling for Obama. I don't think it's ever right to push your political beliefs on your child.
8I also agree that children should not be political pawns.
I remember going to school for speech class with conservative screeds to present that my mom had typed up for me. It took me years to get over that brainwashing. I would not wish that on anyone, right or left.
9The evangelical christian movement in the States is scary and I actually hope it dies out.
10I don't approve of what they are doing and I agree, children should not be political pawns.
Of course parents have the right to share their beliefs with their kids, it's unfortunate that these children will be sheltered from the rest of society thanks to homeschooling and will, in essense, be brainwashed.
Whoa whoa - we should not be considering any lawas that control family size...that is crazy. Yeah they are crazy too but lets calm down. This happens all the time, lots of religions have these crazy ideas, they pass.
11Quiverfull is not remotely representative of all evangelical Christians in America, Zivanod.
12(Seriously, "The evangelical christian movement in the States is scary and I actually hope it dies out?" When did it become okay to be so openly bigoted against other people's beliefs?)
13its okay to bash christians. its safe.
14Sure it's safe to bash Christians. Just like it's safe to bash anything that is anti-abortion, conservative, moral, old-fashioned or responsible. Power to pro-choice liberal youth who won't provide for the babies they have with their girlfriends and only them, people!
