There are many forms of birth control out there. The pill you have to think about every day, the Patch you think about once a week, the NuvaRing once a month, and condoms you think about just when you have sex,
and then there's the Depo-Provera shot that you think about once every 3 months.
Sounds great, right? Well, it may not be as wonderful as it sounds.
What are the disadvantages? To find out read more
- Many women complain of irregular bleeding
- You must visit your doctor every 3 months to get the injection
- It may cause weight gain
- It does NOT protect against STIs such as HIV
What? There's more?
- It may take a while for you to become fertile again after going off Depo-Provera.
Once you do decide to get pregnant, some women resume regular menstrual cycles right away, but for many women, it may take up to 6-12 months after her last injection to become fertile. A woman must really think about her future when deciding to take this method of birth control.
This form of birth control is only recommended for women who are not planning on having kids for at least 2 years, and only if other forms of contraception are not right for you.
What? It gets worse?
- Using Depo may cause you to lose calcium stored in your bones.
The longer you use Depo-Provera, the more calcium you are likely to lose. This could lead to osteoporosis. The awful part is that the calcium may not return completely once you stop using the shot.
So there you have it. If you are interested in this form of birth control, talk to your doctor about the risks associated with Depo-Provera, to see if this is right for you.

the weight gain for me was a horror. I gained 20 pounds the frist month i started taking the shot! Whats worse, the month i decided to go off of it and missed the shot, i lost the 20 pounds! it was insane. I did however, have sex without a condom in my monogomous relationship and did not get preggers, so it works for sure.
1ARGH!!
I hate Depo SO much. It has completely ruined my life! They stopped giving the injections in Wales in 2004 and I was forced to come off it then and I've had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS!!
I gained over 2 stone when I was on it which dropped off as soon as the injections stopped. My periods disappeared for four years and then I BLED CONTINOUSLY for another year once the injections were not being administered anymore.
I've now been referred for a BREAST SCAN because the depo provera has given me LUMPS and my periods are still messed up. I'm probably infertile (according to two doctors).
The kicker? I'm 23. 23!!!!!!!!! I might as well be post menopausal.
2i have been on depo for 6 years and have had no side effects whatsoever. my doctor informed me of the impact on my fertility (something i'm not at all worried about right now) and that it will take some time for it to come back, but overall, i love it! i even refer to depo, to my friends, as the "miracle shot"
3Hormonal birth control is a nightmare.
4I was on Depo for close to 7 years and it was great not having any periods. But I did gain 30 pounds and it WOULD NOT COME OFF. I was working out 2 times a day on a strict (but very healthy) diet (I'm being honest here, I had my cheat day once a week but besides that was totally committed) and it wouldn't budge. If anything I think I gained more weight.
5As soon as I switched to the pill, the weight came off. That by far was the most frustrating part of it all that the weight you gain wont come off!
weight gain you can't lose, osteoporosis, potential permanent infertility. nooo, thanks. I'll stick to my little pills, lol
6You've got to find the birth control that works for you. I have two friends on depo who absolutely love it!
7I've never tried Depo and I don't think I ever will. 2 friends of mine tried it and it was hell for both. Neither reported weight gain, but one friend had spotting for 3 months and the other had a heavy period for 3 months.
I've used The Pill off and on for the last 5 years with no problems, so I don't think I'll be switching any time soon.
8it's funny that you mention the infertile thing, because a friend of mine actually was just late on the shot by about a week or so i think, and got pregnant. she thought that she just wasn't getting her period because she was on the shot, but when it didn't come again after the shot wore off, she realized she was pregnant and it was too late to do anything about it.
9The problems don't really begin until after you come off it. That is when the floodgates open (er, literally in the menstrual sense) and all of the problems start.
ALL of the problems.

Not a good choice for me ever too many side effects.
11On the Depo-Proveras website, it does say that this method of birth control should ONLY be used if all other forms of birth control aren't right for you. There are so many other forms of birth control that are safer with less side effects, so Depo wouldn't be my choice.
It's great if you are on Depo and it works for you. I would just be worried about trying to get preggers after going off it.
12I've heard horrible things about Depo.
I did want to make a fix to the article. It says you need to remember the ring weekly, but really you put it in once a month and take it out once a month. It's really just a once a month thing. It's fantastic. No side effects, no forgetting every day!!!
13That's yet another reason I stuck with the Mirena. Now that I've had it taken out (due to expiration, not trying for a baby) I miss it! I know I want kids in the next year, so it's condoms for now. (A total change from never having to think about it [for 5 years!] to ALWAYS having to.) I had no idea that Depo was THAT bad though! YIKES!
14I thought it was a "miracle".. until I came off the thing.
15If it sounds too good to be true, be wary!
I had the Depo shot administered once, and all I have to say is, if you are sensitive to birth control or have problems with depression, this is not the drug for you. My skin became horrible and I was so depressed I couldn't leave the house some days. Now I use the Nuva Ring and I can't stop recommending it to people.
16I was completely fine with it. The only thing that happened that I liked, is that it cut my cicle completely off while I was on it. Other than that, I like it.
17Sounds kinda horrible.
18I never tried it.
19No birth control pill/shot/ring will protect you from any STIs, including HIV. STIs are spread through contact, so a condom can help (but again, not guaranteed, as they don't cover the entire genital area). HIV can be spread through contact with bodily fluids, so again, a condom can help prevent transmission.
All hormonal birth control pills have the possible side effect of weight gain. Estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate in your body during your normal cycle. Depo contains progesterone, while the common birth control pill is both estrogen and progesterone. The ring contains both estrogen and progesterone.
Meanwhile, there is actually a marked risk for deep vein thrombosis (blood clots) that can be fatal, if they reach your brain or heart), when you use the birth control patch or pill. Apparently, there is less of a risk if you use Depo. Also, the risk of deep vein thrombosis also rises if you fly often.
20Depo was the worst, I bled for three months straight like a period.
21I use the ring and love it! I never have to worry about taking a pill at the same time every day b/c it's already there. One less thing I have to stress about throughout my day =)
22I was on Depo for four years and gained 40 lbs! It was a gradual 10/lbs per year. After I went off of it, I didn't have my period for two years. (I didn't have it when I was on Depo, which was nice, though.) All in all, I would NEVER recommend it to anyone.
23I have been on depo on and off for over 8 years (came off for one year recently just to try the ring, which was AWFUL). I just had a bone scan showing no bone loss, had irregular bleeding for the first two months after my first shot, but NO period since, and although I have to work a little harder to keep the weight off, it's SO worth it. Everything has it's downside - estrogen pills make my blood pressure too high and I'm an emotional wreck on them, but if depo is the right choice for you, it's WONDERFUL!! ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL - there are those of us who love depo, and crappy generic articles like this keep people from finding the right fit for them.
24This is like the worst thing ever. The first 2 months it was just perfect and then I started to get headaches, depression, spoting, I didn't gain weight but I was on a diet and I couldn't lose any. I would not recomment it not even to my enemies.
25I have never had any problem with weight gain or any of the other problems. Going in every three months is fine with me because I got to the doctor at least once a month for my bipolar and Type 1 diabetes. I dont want kids either so the not being able to get pregant for awhile isnt going to bother me either. I have my bone density checked and so far so good I havent had any problems with that either.
26Depo can either be a wonderful method for you, or a bad method. It all depends on your chemical make-up. For example, I've been on the shot for about 3 years now, lost 10 pounds, have not had any periods since my first shot, and don't ever plan on having children, so I'm not too concerned about the infertility thing. I've had my bone density checked and am showing no signs of depleted calcium. This article doesn't fairly describe both sides of the story.
27ive had it for like a month, and i didnt get my period-even though i knew i was about to get it when i started- but now, ive been bleeding EVERY TIME during sex for two weeks, and i just got my period(??) and today i have horrible cramps. im confused and beginning to hate this damn thing
28Another late period for me today - four years after coming off the shot my cycle STILL isn't back to normal.
29I love Depo! I've been on it for years. I initially gained around 10 pounds and had spotty periods for the first 3 months, but the pounds naturally came back off after the first 3 months and I have enjoyed years with No Period! (love that!!)
30I do make sure I take at least 1200 mg of calcium a day and also additional vitamin D to make sure its being absorbed.
And going to the Doc 4 times a year is really no biggie esp. because one of those visits is for my annual anyway.
I HATE depo-provera. Before I used it I was a little dystemic, a very mild form of depression. No one told me that this would make it worse. I have never been moody or had mood swings. After using this for 3 months, I had some very bad mood swings and they were ruining my relationship with my boyfriend and family. I also became suicidal and now I have A LOT more problems after using this shot then before I even took it. I am 18 and already have a sh*t ton of problems to deal with. I just want to be normal again...I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS MILD DEPRESSION. Lybrel, the pill, is what I am on now and it is sooooo much better! Take that instead! It WILL make a difference!!!
31OMG! I really really Hate Depo So Much! Damn It Anyways !!!!!
32well I am 20 Now and i stopped useing it when i was 18 and i started when i was 14 and now i been with my boyfriend for about 2-3 years and we want a baby and we been trying and trying .... aww So it really f*cked my life up i hope i still can be fertile ... But i hate It I DOnt Recommend DEPO to n-e one i fugdeing gain weight like crazzy! and it effed me up so if any one can help me out here i would love that lol kinda feel like sh*t right now
Ive been using the depot for about a year and a half and it was great at first but then the side effects came and now i rely don't like it but my boyfriend and don't want children yet and he is worried that if i stop my shot that i might get pregnant and i stay on it to make him happy but i rely cant so this no more the headaches, cramping, fatigue, hot flashes, joint stiffness i can go on and on but i wont all i have to say is i would not recommend this for anyone
33i was on it only 6 moths, after having gastric bypass surgery to lose my weight i gained 10 pounds. I didn't care for that! not only that i had my period for 14 weeks straight!!! I almost bought stock in tampax> i hated it and got off it and had my tubes tied instead, cause i want no more kids mine was 18. It's not for everyone, and it wasn't for me
34I have been taking the Depo for about a year and a quarter now, and while my period is still spotting, and I get a few zits on my face, it's very convenient. The Patch is sticky and kinda gross, the Ring gave me yeast infection-like symptoms, and the pill was tough to remember on time, I'm nervous about Implanon, and I've heard bad things about IUDs. It can be tough to remember to consume enough calcium everyday, but I don't plan to stay on Depo much longer anyway. A year is a good length, and I would say it has definitely been worth it. Condoms are by far the easiest and most convenient type of birth control, and I use those too, even with my monogamous partner because one form of birth control is almost never enough to be sure. And condoms can be found free almost anywhere in the US.
Depo is certainly only for the people willing to risk the potential results. For me, gaining weight hasn't been a problem, but getting zits is a little frustrating. And spotting is just a little awkward, but I just don't wear fancy underwear anyway so it doesn't really matter.
35I went on to the depo because I have a hard time remembering to take pills on time and I wanted the relief of not having a period. The periods that I have dealt with my whole life have been nightmares. Waking up soaked in my own blood, needing to call into work because I would have to stay close to a restroom because it was so heavy.
36But the relief that I wanted I have not gotten, I traded that in for a constant period, I have had period for 2 weeks now with no sign at all of stopping. I have been sent to the ER once because of the pain it caused. The bleeding comes in waves from very light (to where I think it is going to stop) to moderate. Granted not as heavy as I am used to, still a pain. I never know when it is going to pick up which has not been easy to deal with because it tends to happen at the worse times. Thank goodness I have a boyfriend who is very understanding about because it has happened the past couple of times we have been together. I am not going to be getting my next shot and never will go onto this form of BC again.
I warn women not to go on this, the side effects to me out way what ever good it does with me not getting pregnant or relief that I had expected. I am going in to the Doctor and praying that there is something that can be done to stop the bleeding because it is pretty bad when I am wishing for the nightmare of a period I had before back.
i started the shot about 2 yrs ago. .and i regrettt it soooo dammn much. .i gained 10 pounds!! & im also a very moody person since then. . .i don't recommend for this BC method to be used ; since there are lots of better ways to prevent pregnancy. .trust me!! u don't wanna be bleeding for a whole month having no idea when it will stop. . & also ruining your relationships with those around you jst because this sh*t gets u in the wierdestttttt moods. .& to make it alll even worsttttt! it makes u gain soo much weight. .
37I have only been on the shot for 2 1/2 months and after im done with the total three months i will never get this thing ever again!!!!!!!! I have gained weight that i have tried to get off by exercising and all i do is gain weight. I have gained 10 pounds in 2 months it is horrible. I wont stop bleeding and i have been so deppresed and moody. I am hoping that as soon as i switch back to the pill i will feel like myself again and hopefully get to my normal weight. This shot is the worst decision that i have ever made. The only good thing is that it actually helps you not to get pregnant but it had made my body horrible.
38well ive onli taken d shot 2 tyms n decided 2 cum off bc of weight gain n moodiness.ma period was usualli d 1st wk of d month n wen i came off d shot n i dint get ma period, i took a hpt after waitin a wk but was negative. its gna b d beginning of d month again but ima taq anothr hpt just taq make sure
