I'm always very impressed by people who can speak multiple languages fluently. In my battle to learn French, which started in high school, I've often felt like Joey from Friends, who struggles to learn French for an acting part. In that episode, which I've posted for you here, Joey tries his best, but can't do better than speaking French-sounding gibberish. Since today is International Translation Day, tell me: if you could speak a foreign language fluently, which one would it be?

1Any! Well, I do speak english, but if I had to chose a second it would definitely be french! I took spanish in high school and and italian in college, neither took. Darn, oh well!
2I would love to be able to speak Spanish. I took it for 10 years during school, but I always lost it whenever school was out! I would love to be able to learn it and then go to a Spanish speaking country and be able to communicate!
3Italian, definitely! I'm Dutch and speak English and French fluently, but my family is from Italy and I would love to be able to speak that too!
4Portuguese or Russian
5Spanish. It's a lovely language, and it's useful.
6I speak Spanish well enough. I wish I'd minored in Japanese, though. I'd love to be able to play Final Fantasy games before they're released in English.
7I speak English and my French is OK, but I'd love to be able to speak Spanish, simply because it would be so useful, particularly here in the D.C. area, where there's a large Spanish-speaking population.
Mandarin would be a close second, just due to the usefulness of it on a global scale.
8Mandarin and Spanish.
English is my first language and I know a decent amount of French.
9I know a tiny amount of Spanish, but I would love to become fluent!
10There are so many languages I'd love to be able to speak, it's really hard to pick just one. If I had to, I'd probably go for either Finnish or Polish. I've considered taking up both of these languages, but I fear they're just too difficult to learn, even on a pretty basic level, without actually spending some time in those countries. I'm considering taking some Spanish classes instead.
11My native language is German and I also speak English, French (it's rusty though) and some Danish. I speak Swiss German as well, but I think only the Swiss consider that a language in its own right.
I'd love to speak arabic fluenty again. I say again, because that was my first language, but i didn't speak it for almost a decade and now i struggle, and i have members of my family that id love to be able to talk to without translation.
I'd also love to be able to speak spanish only because i've taken classes and still can't remember and it would be so useful here.
12I wish I could speak spanish. I live in a hispanic community and I am part mexican so not speaking spanish is a real pain in the butt sometimes.
13I want to learn to speak Spanish. I have several friends who speak it and it would be nice to be able to talk to them without them having to stop and translate for me. I just got Rosetta Stone, so I'm hoping that it works!
14Spanish or Japanese
15I don't know but I wish more people would speak English here in Amerika! Seems these days it's everything but.
16I always wished I had kept up with my Spanish...coming from Austin and then going to school in Los Angeles--it really would have come in handy. Especially since I am Puerto Rican too!
17I speak both English and Spanish fluently and a little French.
18I speak 4 languages flutently (French Arabic English and Spanish), but would loooove to learn Russian and Italian, maybe Portuguese also. But i don't know if it's possible to speak correctly 4 latin languages (french spanish italian and portuguese) without mixing them up constantly...
19I would love to speak, Hebrew, Japanese, Spanish, and French. But i dont see how i can learn all of them really. Wish I could speak fluently in those languages.
20English is my native language, and my spoken/written French are good enough to get me through a conversation or a visit to the country, though I wish it was better (I'd love to read the literature in the native language someday!).
If I could learn anything I think right now I'd pick Italian. My boyfriend's family is Italian on his mom's side. His grandparents own a home in Italy (which will more than likely be my boyfriend's, sometime in the very very distant future) and his grandmother speaks only the slightest amount of English .. I wish I could communicate with her better, because she's very sweet and (I assume) likes me a lot, since the only English sentence she seems to have gotten a firm grasp on is "When you and Steven get married ..."
21French! Hands down.
22I'm conversational in Spanish (lost some of it after I left Spain, unfortunately), but I'd like to learn French and Mandarin. Those are my mom's first 2 languages, but she never taught me either and now all she speaks is English! If I ever become a mom, I'm making sure to teach my kids another language.
23German. I've wanted to learn it since I was 11. I'm obsessed with German culture. Thai would be cool too.
24Gujarati..It's a dialect from India that my boyfriend and his family speak. Much like Stardust, I'd like to be able to communicate with his Grandma, who speaks NO English. Aside from being able to communicate with them, it really is a fascinating language that I'd love to know.
25Vietnamese or Korean, I think, though sometimes I really wish I could do Cantonese or Taiwanese/Hokkien for market-bargaining when I travel. I already speak Mandarin.
26i would love to speak spanish, french, and italian. anytime i hear these languages spoken, i get goosebumps
27I took French 3 years in middle school and 3 years in high school, but now that I haven't taken a class in 3 years my french is absolutely terrible. I would like to be able to speak it fluently, it's a really beautiful language. But I think from here it's only going to get worse, lol.
28I understand some french, but can't speak it for the life of me. I would like to speak spanish because there are so many spanish speaking people in my area. I would also like to learn to speak Korean so I know what the ladies at the nail place are saying. I know they are always talking about me and laughing!!
29Fluent in English, French and Arabic. Would love to learn Spanish or Italian but It'd also be cool if I can speak AFRIKAANS.
30My native language is Portuguese and I only speak English, Italian, French and German fluently. I travel a lot and wish I could speak the language of every country I go to, because you can make more connections this way. Unfortunately that's quite difficult, so I stick to the basics of each new language.
Also, thinking that everyone should be able to speak English in non-English-speaking countries is a huge mistake. Although English is the most spoken language nowadays, if that's the only language you know and you go to a foreign country, where the official language is not English, don't demand of people to know it - it's considered very rude.
31There are many languages I would love to speak fluently. If I had to choose one I think it would be Latin. I heard that it is easier to learn other languages and understand them better if you learned Latin. However, if that isn't true then I would love to speak Italian fluently even though everyone and their mom (seriously) wishes I would speak Spanish fluently.
32I know Spanish, English, French, Japanese, but I really want to learn Korean and Tagalog!
33So many..I wish I knew Latin because it is scholarly, Spanish because it is useful, Japanese because it sounds cool, French because it sounds beautiful.
34I'm Dutch and I'm fluent in both Dutch, English and German. But I'd love to be able to speak Danish. Also I'd love to speak French but after 3 years of French class I kinda gave up. French and I just don't get along.
35I'd love to speak Polish. My boyfriends family are Polish and they speak it a lot in front of me. I know a few words but I'd like to be able to communicate better with them.
36I like how Russian sounds so I guess it would be it. But since I'm already struggling with English, I doubt I'll ever learn to speak Russian ;P
37Btw, International Translation Day...? Wow, I had no clue we had an International Translation Day ;D
Albanian - my boyfriend and his family speak it. Besides, it's the only language in its family left, so it would be cool to know such a unique language.
38Well, I'm brazilian so I already speak Portuguese. Also I've studied English my whole life so I'm fluent in English too. But I would really like to become fluent in French and learn Italian and German.
39Italian and French
40Spanish... I speak English & French(okay).
41Spanish is my mother tongue, I speak fluent English and German!!!
42I don't see any comments demanding that people know English in other countries.
I
thought it was common knowledge that it's considered rude to "demand of people to know it." That comment seems out of left field.
43That Friends clip was hilarious!
44I speak English of course
And french fluently. I wish I could speak Arabic again
like I used to (I still know a fair amount though, I speak Moroccan Arabic too) I know a little Spanish, Italian and I'm learning German. I know tid bits of other languages too.
I'd love to speak Spanish, Japanese and Italian fluently though
45French!
46Italian and french they sound beautiful.
47Dutch. My husband is Dutch and I can't speak hardly a word. I would like to talk to his mother without him as the interpreter. It doesn't work to follow him around and ask how do you say this or that. This Christmas I will have to invest in Rosetta stone since there is not one college or school that teaches it in this God forsaken city.
48My mother tongue is spanish and I love it! I learned italian when I was little xD and well, I speak english as well. I am a decent french speaker but sometimes I get messed up with italian. Although I don't speak Portuguese or Romanian I understand them perfectly thanks to the fact I know 4 romance language and my FRICKIN 5 years of latin! I am so grateful to my beloved nuns for that. So let's see: Spanish, italian, english and french.
49Now, I know some japanese, enough to get a taxi, order food and ask for the restroom. Animals, colors, stuff like that. I would kill to speak japanese.
I need to speak Hebrew and Russian. I just need to. It's my last semester in college so I am going to devote myself to learn one or the other. I wish I could speak arab, most of my friends speak arab in Venezuela (huge colony) and I always thought it sounded so beautiful and mysterious. Love it!
to # 5 : Alexis Bledel speaks perfect spanish! actually is her first language.
