When the economy changes, people often find that their jobs are in jeopardy. When companies go through lay offs, they usually let you go, with a severance package to keep you afloat for the time being until you can find another job. Each severance package is different and it depends on your position and your pay check, but ladies, if you were given a pretty lofty check on your way out, allowing you the luxury of not having to immediately begin the job search, do tell, what would you do with your new found freedom?

I would immediately begin looking for a job..once i ahd a start date secured, then i would relax, visit family and friends, pamper myself until it started. I would not be able to enjoy my time at all if i was stressed about finding a new job.
1I'd probably veg out for a month, sleeping in as late as I want and reading as many books as I could.
2Actually, this happened to me this summer! I was actually planning on leaving the company in early August, told my boss too early, and was laid off months earlier than expected when they found a replacement.
I've been really enjoying the summer though, catching up with my reading, spending time with friends. Its been fantastic. Especially since I hated that job!
3i walked off my job and started my own business! its been extremly hard but it's mine!
4It would depend on how long I'd be 'suppported' for. If it was more than a few weeks, I'd take some time to myself to read, write, think, catch up on myself, etc. I'd probably also spend as much time as I could with my friends, and do a bit of traveling. Basically, just relax.
5I'd take a mini vacation, but I'd also be looking for a new job right away. I can't "do nothing" for long periods of time, I get very bored.
6i think if you gets some money then go somewhere nice to chill for 2 weeks. You'll come back to a much clearer start.
7look for a job ASAP. I can't afford COBRA!
8I would need to find another job right away. I couldn't support myself with unemployment.

10I would immediately get a job waiting tables or something, and start looking for another "real" job. I would want to put as much of the severance in savings. Besides, I cant stand being idle and not working or doing something.

12I would look for a new job ASAP. This happened to two of my friends, and one of my girlfriends didn't look for work right away, she took a break for a month and now she can't find a job. It's just her and her husband though and he works so they still do okay. The other one looked for a job right away and found one so she actually made extra money because of the severance. She's a single mom so she didn't have a choice and it turned out well for her.
13I would be looking for a job ASAP!! Single mom here I can't afford not to work severance pay or not....
14I got laid off twice within a year. Both times, I got six weeks severance. With hardly anything in savings, I looked for a job immediately.
Luckily for me, I found a job quickly both times (weeks before my severance ran out). So I didn't get to enjoy as much time off as I'd like, but I ended up getting extra money out of the deal!
15I'd secure a new "real" job as soon as I could....possible take up a PT job while I'm waiting for it to happen...for extra cash just so I don't use all of my severence...and take some time for myself- do a bit of travelling, maybe get a fresh haircut some new clothes.
16I got fired once, and I immediately started looking for a job that day, I know myself, If I just vegged out for awhile I would never snap out of it!
17Getting Fired was one of the best things that has ever happened to me.
Call unemployment.... immediatley start the job search... put all of my good clothes in the cleaners.
18Freak out. I'd have to move out of my apartment b/c I wouldn't be able to afford living there anymore. Either I'd move in with my boyfriend or go back home to my parents. Either way, I'd immediately start a new job search. I need money!
19start collecting unemployment immediately... (at least in connecticut - getting laid off in october is pretty much a death sentence). apply for ANY and EVERY job you can find whether you are over qualified or not. it took me over 4 months to secure a steady full time job after getting laid off.
the most important thing is to not get too down on yourself. try to be proactive and keep yourself occupied with other things besides daytime television, it's never good when you get addicted to the price is right, days of our lives, and ice cream for breakfast.
20The last time I got laid off I decided that I would try something new to keep me distracted during the irritating job-seeking phase. So I went to the craft store and bought yarn and crochet hooks and a book on how to crochet. 2 days later I got a new job. Good for me, but not so good for the crochet hooks. I'm not even sure where they went. I think the dog played with the yarn until I threw it away.

It's the best way to find something new, better and move on!
My bff's mom got fired after she was a little too "vocal"...she got an amazing severance package and was pumped to enjoy her summer except the first week she lost her diamond earing, her ac quit, and a glass milk bottle burst in her hand and severed a tendon in her big toe, had to have surgery and can't put weight on it for 12 weeks...needless to say my bff is her chauffuer for the next 3 months
23i would visit my sister and her kids and prob go on a much needed vacation with my booboo
24I got laid off when the company I'd been with for years was in trouble. I got a fantastic package where I got my full salary for 3 months, then after that I could collect unemployment. I also had my full health benefits for the rest of the year. I took the 3 months off that I was receiving a full salary and took a few trips, stayed up late watching old movies, slept late every morning, met friends for lunch....it was wonderful.
25totally got laid off this summer. i liked my job and was surprised by it, and i only got a few weeks severence, so i took friends advice & applied for unemployment. everyone is jealous of my summertime freedom but i've been very busy/productive with my time- my fiance & I are planning our wedding!
