"Atonement is a process that never ends."
— In his posthumous memoir True Compass, Senator Ted Kennedy discusses the 1969 accident in Chappaquiddick, MA. He revisits the night when he drove into the water with passenger Mary Jo Kopechne and waited 10 hours to notify the police resulting in Mary Jo's death. Kennedy calls his actions "inexcusable." In the autobiography, the late Kennedy also opens up about the death of his brothers, his drinking problem, and his frustration with never getting real healthcare reform for Americans. The book is out Sept. 14. Would you read it?

I'm looking forward to checking the book out. I'm sure the Chappaquidick accident is understandably something he lived with every day for the rest of his life. It must have been even harder to deal with it in the public eye, but it was something he always openly regretted to see happen, and he was able to evolve as a person and a politician from it. Despite it being a horrible accident, how he lived with it and recognized it as a horrible accident shows character and strength to me.
1Hmm. I would hope he regretted it.
2He should regret it. He killed someone and got away with it.
3This was not an "accident" like spilling milk on the carpet. He killed somebody! If his name wasn't Kennedy, he would have been in jail! That woman was estimated to have survived TWO HOURS after the crash in an air bubble. She was trying to survive but his f'ed up a*s was too worried about his rep to do anything! Despicable. And from what I understand, he did not notify police, fishermen who found the car did and then he realized the jig is up and THEN spoke to police. SO wrong I can't even fathom it. The Kennedys seems to have mind erasers attached to them...ppl love them despite some f'ed up sh*t.
4posts like the one above mine always make me mad. i mean everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but i hate when people act like they know it all. the truth is no one will ever know what happened there. it was a terrible situation, and ted kennedy made bad decisions that night, but don't act like you know everything, making assumptions.
5It is true though. Kennedy left the scene when he could have helped her survive. And if he wasn't a Kennedy then he would have been in jail for it. That's just a fact splash but I still understand your anger because Kennedy did go on to help a lot of people from his senate status.
