What is going on with today's teens? I just read a study that said there's been a 76 percent rise in emergency room visits between 1998 -2005 among teens who are abusing ADHD drugs like Adderall. (They crush the meds, which may or may not have been prescribed to them, snort them, and can experience side effects that mimic cardiac arrest.)
And now, a news report says that not only are many teens abusing alcohol and drugs — they're delivering those substances to their systems in bizarre and harmful ways. In Phoenix, AZ, they're snorting vodka, and some teens are soaking vodka in their tampons, which, as one expert said, can damage their reproductive systems. (And I would rather not visualize what an anal beer bong is.)
This is just sad. I was a pretty innocent teen, and although there were some bad girls in junior high who brought alcohol to school, I don't think they were doing drugs.
The woman in the video who specializes in dealing with teen substance abuse says that drug use triples between sixth and eighth grade. Did you see this in your schools growing up?

Nope. I was fortunate not to grow up with complete idiots. In High School, we were very sports oriented (as well as in a wealthy neighborhood) so drugs weren't too common. Most people cared about sports and their cars more than they cared about their own life, and anything to jeopardize losing the ability to play sports or take out their BMW's and whatever for a spin, they wouldn't do. As a part of the "popular" clique, people thought we did drugs and what not, but it didn't happen. I wasn't about to get kicked out of cheerleading because I was trippin' on mushrooms or something. I had a few drinks in HS, but not many at all since it wasn't my style. Maybe 3 drinks out of 4 years in HS. It was pointless. And again...I knew someone who had vodka in her hands at her HS, and she posted the pic on MySpace. She was a cheerleader, and the day after she posted the photo she was suspended and kicked off of her squad.
At the school I teach at, there seem to be a few kids who hang out with the wrong crowd -- ya know, the kids that bring vodka and stuff to school in sports drink bottles. More often than not I see kids carrying gallons of water to keep hydrated for their sports, so it makes me really proud and happy. I don't know what they do when they are not in school, but I'd like to believe they are behaving themselves and keeping themselves safe.
1Actually, we'll see what happens this school year! Hopefully they acted like mature teens over summer break...haha...yeah, right.
2No, I was awfully wholesome in high school (and college). I was a good girl. I regret that to this day.
3Drugs were so big in both towns I lived in. When I cam to my new school the kids were convinced I was an undercover police agent, I had to prove that I wasn't (by having people over my house and showing them my parents were real).
4Oh I went to one poor school, so the drugs of choice were alcohol, meth, and mary j. At the rich school I went to, the drugs of choice were alcohol, heroine, and coke. I didn't do any drugs, but hung out w/ some rich school peeps in college. I stopped hanging out w/them the night one guy did a line of coke, did some heroine, and then pissed on his passed out roommate (his roommate had pissed on his books before he passed out).
5I was a raging alcoholic in high school (I kept a bottle in my nightstand so I could have an eye opener when my mom brought juice & continued all day) but I certainly never put booze anywhere but my mouth! I think this has urban legend written all over it. Teenagers get vodka to drink it.
But since my 2 best friends in grade 8 were cokeheads, and a bunch of us were addicted to morphine by the time we were 16, I'd say these idiots with the beer bongs in their assholes are pretty tame...
I do love the way they warn parents that anything can be made into a pipe or stash can, as if that hasn't been the case for decades... potheads are resourceful, we can make pipes & bongs like macgyver lol. Those hi-liter pipes are novelty items and the people that waste money on them are generally not heavy smokers anyway, just stupid kids.
6I was not the "wholesome" kid and I would never think of sticking a vodka soaked tampon in my hooha
7I too was an innocent teen, and this is just shocking to me as a mom. Vodka-soaked tampons? What's next?!
8Vodka soaked tampons?! UMMMMMMMMM wouldn't that BURN like no other?! Crazy kids, I'm only in my mid twenties but I assure you no one I know did that.. way easier ways if you were desperate!
9Being from AZ, I'm pretty sure I know exactly where this is going on. Doesn't surprise me. Way too many people I knew in High School have died from Oxycontin overdose. These kids grow up having money readily available to them. Mommy and daddy will give them anything they want. Some parents were even known for having these parties, selling drugs. It just pathetic, luckily I was a good kid and stayed out of trouble. I saw the stupidity around me and didn't want to be a part of it.
10There were a lot of kids smoking weed in high school. There was one time when we had an hour off and my classmates held a competition who could smoke the largest amount of weed in that hour. A boy I shall call K. won the competition. But the sad thing for me in this story is that the hour after that, during English class, K. sat right behind me and he felt a bit dizzy from all the weed and he threw up all over me. The teacher sent K. downstairs to go to the principals office and not too long after that she sent me downstairs too to ask the principal if I could go home so I could shower and change my clothing. When walking downstairs I found K. hanging against a wall being all delusional. That moment I decided I would never ever do drugs and till this day I still haven't. I was 14 back then and I was so shocked that people my age did that kind of things at my high school. I thought that was something from the movies and the books. But I could not have been more wrong.
A couple of years later when I went to art school I met really nice people and I really liked them, how ever every time we had a break they would go out and smoke weed. I refused every time and after a while they invited me to a party. Only a couple of hours before that party I heard that they wanted to get me drunk and make me do all sorts of drugs. I'm glad I didn't go and until this day I haven't used drugs once. I plan to keep it that way. If I find out some of my friends is using drugs, they're not going to be my friends any more. I don't want that kind of people around me.
11In high school the drugs of choice were pot and alcohol. This was in the late 90's. Once and a while we would get our hands on some acid or extasy and experiment with that. We never did anything weird like described above. I don't do any of that stuff anymore even though I have people around me that constantly smoke pot. I just don't have the urge to do it. That was in the past. I still enjoy throwing back a few beers though.
12I'm in the Weffie club, as far as my years of hardcore drinking go, even as early as high school. Nowadays, I think I have three or four drinks in a whole year.
To be honest, I doubt this is a trend. As long as I've been alive, the news has delighted in stories that portray "todays youth" as out of control!!!! They did it with 90210 when I was a teenager, and they're doing it now. I think these stories are just a few isolated, especially stupid incidents.
You'd have to be out of your mind to put vodka in your vajayjay.
13i just graduated last year from a school in los angeles and i was for the most part a good kid. i didn't smoke/drink/do drugs etc. but i knew people who did. the people at my school were pretty crazy, and willing to try almost anything
14I watch the show Doctors and they had an episode about this. Not only teens do it- adults do too, which is alarming.
People shove coke up their ass and vag and eventually the walls between the two break down and you poo out of your vagina, bleed out of your ass. Its crazy. And all that for a quick high(it gets absorbed into your system immediately)
15I heard about the vodka tampon thing in elementary school, but it seemed like way too much of an urban myth. Maybe it was a myth that people just had to try haha
16I'm pretty sure this is a myth. I heard on the Doctors that you would die from putting alcohol in your rectum, and then I was like.. why would ANYONE do that, and who are these people that they would even have to say that to? and then I looked some stuff up and it seems to me like if these teens really are soaking tampons or analbeerbong ing then there would be a LOT more dead teens in the news. So far I haven't heard any "Teen Dies from Anal Beer Bong!" in the news soo.. i'll go with MYTH.
17I'm from New Jersey... it starts in 5th grade. I didn't have my first drink until i was 21, and I still don't drink. Thats the only one I had. Some of these things mentioned are a bit extreme, but I know many people that started young, almost everyone It seemed. My little sister and her friends started smoking cigarettes at 10, drinking at 14 and doing drugs by 15 (they're all 17 now). Thats typical where I'm from. I've never smoke or taken drugs... but then again, I'm just traditional and never wanted to abuse my body... I also strive to go against the grain and be different.

19I went to a relatively well off highschool and everyone started drinking and experimenting with drugs in 9th/10th grade (mid to late 90's). My friends definitely smoked weed and drank lots of alcohol by 11th grade and a majority of people in our grade were doing it (parents definitely knew about it too). We had some girls doing heroine and cocaine to be ultra model-thin and I can remember when some of those girls' hair started falling out - you could see their scalp and I remember when they had a full head of thick hair in middle school. College - people did lots of weed and drinking, but never heard of anything like this. My hubby tells me about snorting ecstasy and vicodin/oxy cotin (however that is spelled) and he did a lot harder drugs than many I know and even he never heard of putting stuff in the places mentioned above. Kids are so wierd nowadays!
I was always the clean, good girl, which every bad group needs. Didn't really drink (get migraines) so I was usually DD, and didn't do any drugs so I was always the sane one who got to help the others when they were too out of control.
20I think it was just pot and drinking (the usual teenage antics), however, I was a good girl, a loner, and really out of the loop in high school. After high school, I know some kids who started doing coke, and that was a little shocking to me. I didn't drink until after my 18th birthday (legal age here).
I have also heard of taking booze anally (vaginally is a new one), and I also think this is a bit of fear-mongering on the part of the media. I'm pretty sure the majority of kids are still doing it the old fashioned way.
21Not only is this sad, it's dangerous and scary. I was never even thinking about doing stuff like this when I was in middle school. Or even high school. Especially not now. And I'm proud to say I've never done a single drug in my entire life. But the generations change with changing times... It's unfortunate to see this.
22I'm had my high school years in the early eighties in a small town in Wisconsin. At the most it was sort of Waynes World culture with wood paneled basements. The standard of living and education levels were very high there, and for the most part we were protected from big city life and drugs. There were almost no minorities or poverty. It was the great Midwest and for the most part it was just some drinking, and that's it. I knew some kids did pot but no one had heard of cocaine there. Also harder drugs like heroine was only available in bigger cities. And I can't forget my parents voices in my head all the time about being a loser and a screw up if I did any drugs. That I would amount to nothing if I did drugs. That they would do nothing to help me if I didn't follow rules and wouldn't hesitate to kick me out if I did anything wrong. Well that kind of thing, maybe the rich spoiled kids who do drugs should hear more of it? I can only say some of my friends never heard that. And what did they do? They drank and failed out in high school or their first semester of college. Then went running home to mommy and daddy. Probably to go on doing drugs too. They became the losers my parents warned me about.
23Ecstasy was not invented yet. Later I came to Florida and drugs were becoming popular then. I can't say I didn't have my choices now and again about drugs, but my answers were usually no, and if I did anything it never became an addiction to screw up my life or my grades. I was too smart for that. I do think kids are being exposed to more now, and I worry about it. It stops with the parents in my opinion.
yup, i knew of kids who would put blunts in markers and highlighters..but the tampon thing is the most shocking and ridiculous to me...
24I just want to quote few lines from a blog on high school and it's variables, " http://parentingteens.com/blog/high-sfchool-and-its-variables/ " , it relates, " Numbers don’t lie. Nearly half of all high school seniors in America have experimented with illegal drugs and about three quarters have tried alcohol and this is the daunting scenario that we have today. We are aware of it, the government is aware of it, law enforcers are aware of it but still the nagging problem persists and threatens the fragile future of our youth today.
