Ever since I could remember, I've been "knocking on wood." I learned it from my mother actually - she is an avid wood knocker. It's something we do to prevent something bad from happening. I'll say something like, "I've never gotten pregnant while on the Pill, knock on wood." Or "It looks like it'll be sunny for our BBQ this weekend, knock on wood." And I don't just say "knock on wood," I also find wood and literally knock my knuckles on it. It's definitely one of my superstitions, and in some way, I feel like if I don't do it, I'll have bad luck.

So where did this weird little phenomenon of "knocking on wood" or "touching wood" start anyway? The origin isn't really known, but in the early 1800s, kids used to play a game called "Tiggy-touch-wood," where they had to touch wood in order to be "safe." It could be that the phrase stuck all these years.
I've also heard that people used to "knock on wood" to awaken the kind tree fairies that lived in the woods in addition to preventing the Devil from hearing your bad comments.
I came across a children's book called "Knock on Wood, " so I know I'm not the only one who believes in this, but now I'm curious to know - do you "knock on wood?"

I knock on wood several times a day...If I or someone else says something that I deem to be "bad luck" I will knock on anything, doesnt have to be wood. I dont even consider myself to be superstisious, but I guess I am. haha
1i knock on wood haha.. but i dunno if i really beleive in it... i kinda do it just INCASE haha... now i should go knock on some woood lol.... soo then yea i do it !
2I always knock on wood - I think I did it while talking to someone a few minutes ago! I just don't want to jinx myself, because I totally believe in that kind of stuff!
3In the UK 'touch wood' is used instead. If I can't find anything made of wood, I touch my head (most people do this!) or in Italy 'tocca a ferro' is used ('ferro' means iron in Italian).
4I knock on wood! I really don't believe in it, but it's just a habit sometimes!
5I don't knock on wood.
6I say it and find wood to knock on it. I don't know if it works but i don't dare not do it!
7definitely a wood knocker...
8I do knock on wood. Can't risk the outcome if I dont! lol
9I do... Its silly, I know! But, its a habit...
10I knock on wood and always have!
11I do that all the time (I don't say it out loud though), and like Vannuccia if there's no wood around I knock my head. I'm usually not that superstitious, but I can't help myself on that one.
12I knock on wood so much that I created my own Knock On Wood Wood, hand-crafted wooden tokens small enough to fit in your pocket, clip to your belt or carry on your keychain. Now anyone can take a little wood with them wherever they go to keep their luck alive. Visit www.knockonwoodwood.com to learn more and get your own!
13Every time I say I've never had a cavity I knock on wood(just did actually) I still haven't had one...."Knock on wood"
14Alwasys!
15so superstitious!
I'm not usually superstitious, and I'm not sure that I actually believe it will change anything, but yep, I do touch wood, or as some others, if there's nothing in sight, my head
I suppose it helps that I'm as thick as two planks
Sorry, really bad joke (blame the fact I'm shattered)!!
Than again, I'm also starting to salute magpies, because someone told me your supposed to to get rid of that one for sorrow bad luck, so maybe it's just me going insane!! :S
16I ALWAYS knock on wood which is really weird for me because I am not all that superstitious except for when it comes to knocking on wood lol.
17never. but i wish on hay loads.
18i do, and i think it's dumb =)
19Haha, I do too and when there's none around I knock my own head (or someone else's, lol) for the sawdust, hehe.
20Yep since I was a kid, i have been knocking on wood. : )
21No not really i´m not that superstitious
22Honestly I've never heard of the "knock on wood" but what I do do, is whenever I or someone else talks about someone who is deceased such as like for example: "my grandmother used to go to the park with me 5years ago b4 she died" I wud knock under a table, or if I'm not hear a table just knock on a wall 3 times or under the table 3 times hard and loud.... my parents have been telling me 2 do this ever since I was little, I don't kno why 3times, but they say its for good luck or "para la buena suerte" they would tell me......
23i knock on wood and i definitely try to find wood right after i say that. My mom got me in the habit of doing it.I'm not sure if i believe it but i'm just prone to do it i guess.
24This habit is actually ancient Greek. I've read somewhere that it was believed that with the tapping on the ground (or knocking on wood) the god of the Underworld, Hades, was called as a witness for what we were saying - so nothing bad would happen. It is quite interesting if you think that a widely used superstition is about 5000 years old...
25I just recently started to become OCD about knocking on wood... Idk why but deep down I feel like if something actually happened and I didn't knock on wood I'd feel really bad...... But i don't let me superstition cripple me... I mostly just knock on air....
26I always knock on wood. My mother did it all the time and now I do it. As a joke, if there isn't any wood around, I'll knock my head. lol!
