No matter how you feel about Sarah Palin, you have to admit the woman has an awfully strange way of expressing herself. I've heard her tortured syntax and odd word choices described as a "word salad," but one writer goes further. Palin's speech is likened to a verbal Armageddon because of her unique ability to turn a simple idea into near incomprehensible gobbledygook.
Hart Seely has taken these mangled forms and rakishly proclaimed them found poetry. The simple idea, "small town mayors are on the front lines," once Palinized, sounds like this:
You know,
Small mayors,
Mayors of small towns—
Quote, unquote—
They're on the front lines.
Writing composition masters Strunk and White may not have approved of Palin's use of language ("Omit needless words" was their mantra, after all), but writer Julian Gough facetiously agrees that Sarah Palin is an accidental poet. "A great poet needs to leave open the door between the conscious and unconscious," he says. "Sarah Palin has removed her door from its hinges."
Do you think a politician needs to be articulate, or do you think these folks are just being unfair to Palin?

I think it's offensive to poets for anyone to claim that Palin is a poet.
And yes, politicians need to be articulate. If you're unable to explain your perspective effectively, as Palin has proven to do, you end up with a bunch of misunderstandings and miscommunications that can create dire consequences, not only for the inarticulate politician, but for the public for which the politician serves.
1Palin is the anti-Obama. She doesn't believe in compromise, she's not articulate, she's hostile to the rights of the minority she belongs to.
Her press conference where she resigned totally cracked me up!
2Palin is not a poet, no matter how much she screws up her daily speech. She is a dumbass.
If you're going to have a job that involves speaking to people and being personable, at least be good at those things. She isn't.
3She's a poet and don't know it!
4I really wish she would wrap her lower lip around her head and swallow. Hard.
5Oh please. Palin has received a bad rap from the press. Take a look at most politicians-Clinton, Obama-without their speechwriters they sound the same way.
6"Take a look at most politicians-Clinton, Obama-without their speechwriters they sound the same way. "
Exactly. Remember her speech at the RNC? Whether or not you agree with her or like her (I don't), she was well spoken. Obviously, she had teleprompters and top notch speech writers so she didn't have any verbal blunders.
Obama uses his teleprompters and prewritten speeches practically ALL the time and makes plenty of his own "word salads" when he has to speak without any assistance. (A quick search of "Obama without teleprompter" on YouTube will show you what I mean)
Like I said, I am NO Sarah Palin fan, but I think this is an example of her being attacked rather unfairly by the media.
7Politicians should to be able to communicate effectively but don't have to necessarily be grand orators. Frankly, I don't know if she is constantly being treated unfairly by the media, but I sure am sick of hearing about it, especially from her.
8I really wish she would wrap her lower lip around her head and swallow. Hard.
Word!
9Oh, please. I'm sorry, but Obama is way more articulate without a telepromter than Sarah Palin could ever dream of being. And it hasn't just been one interview. She is useless when someone hasn't written out a speech for her and she hasn't had hours of practice. I agree, everyone sounds better with fantastic speech writers and teleprompters and practice. Sarah sounded very articulate and well rehearsed for the RNC. But that was the ONLY time! Has ANYONE seen the Katie Couric and Charles Gibson interviews?
I think the problem lies in her lack of concern for sounding informed and intelligent. She would rather sound folksey and "down to earth" and keep it on the level for "Joe six pack." But I agree with Barac Obama saying that he doesn't agree with the notion of "dumbing everything down for the American Public" and that we need to be given more credit for what we are capable of understanding without idiotic catch phrases. Obama has sounded intelligent and articulate on many occasions, WITHOUT a teleprompter and a speech writer. Maybe it has something to do with that Harvard Law Degree he has...
10"Everybody knows that it makes no sense that you send a kid to the emergency room for a treatable illness like asthma, they end up taking up a hospital bed, it costs, when, if you, they just gave...you gave him treatment early and they got some treatment and uh...a breathalyzer...er inhalator. Not a breathalyzer. What they'll say is well it cost too much money but you know what, it would cost about...it it it would cost about the same as what we would spend...it...o-over the course of 10 years it would cost what it would cost us it it...huh. Alright...Okay...we're going to."
-President Obama
Sometimes I think the focus on Palinisms is pure classism - she didn't go to Harvard! I mean, she talks like someone *gasp* not from the Northeast elite establishment! She was utterly unprepared for the national spotlight when she stepped into it, but she was not the only person saying some ridiculous things under it.
11Political affiliation aside, my cat could make more sense and speak more eloquently than Palin all while licking his ass and with store brand peanut butter stuck to the roof of his mouth.
12CAT POWER!!!
13I'm totally voting for Fuzzles' cat in 2016!!!
