Even though I live in the same city as my mother, we still talk at least twice a day. She is the most supportive person in my life and is a great listener, but she is my mother -- not my best friend. Now a days, some young women are closer than ever before to their mothers, even opening up about their sex life and personal relationships.
According to an article in The New York Times, there is a new phenomenon of mother/daughter dependency that has some researchers worried. While there isn't much research done on this topic, they have identified some factors playing into this new kind of relationship. Technology, smaller families, young adults making life decisions later in life such as marriage, kids and career, and mothers who desire to keep their kids close and protected since so many young women suffer from depression and anxiety.
While there is something to be said about a close mother/daughter relationship, what I want to know is, how close are you with your mother?

she is the greatest!
1It's funny because I never really contemplated it much. We are close, but we've had a very rough past. It just goes to show that some relationships can be resurrected. I love my mom.
2We're okay, she thinks we are closer than we are, but that's okay with me as long as there is peace.
3my mom´s the greatest i love her, we are very close i tell her everything, she´s my confident and my guide, i love you mom!!
4I am exactly like my father, which is totally opposite of my mom. I like adventure she likes the comforts of home. Not that we don't love each other, we have nothing in common.
5My mother was also my best friend. I miss her every day.
6I chose other. I wouldn't exactly say we are close because I don't talk to her about my personal life or any other problems going on with me but I do talk to her everyday. I sometimes find it really hard to get along with her because she is not what I want to turn out to be. lol I don't know, it's complicated.
7My mother and I are exactly alike, so the same things make us tick. We keep our conversations short and sweet, a few times a week. That gives us less of a chance to get in an argument.
8I still live at home but still probably call her at least twice during the workday. We're definitely super close.
9My mother was an amazing woman. She passed too soon, and too early - leaving my brother at 7 and me at 16. I feel as though she would have been my best friend. I miss her very much, everyday.
10My Mom and I are definitely best friends. I talk to her as much as possible and she's my top friend on MySpace. (: Yes, my Mom is on MySpace!! (: I love her sososo much. I feel so blessed to have a Mom like her.
11we're fine. she's not my best friend. i didn't tell her much growing up, and i'm still the same way. i don't tell her about most things in life because it can get really annoying with her questioning everything. the less she knows, the better.
my boyfriend's mom and his little sister are really close, though, and to me it seems dangerous. the girl just graduated from college, and her mom basically bribed her to go to a local college instead of going away (only 100 miles away, but that would be too much for them). they're dependent on each other, and it's so annoying because his mom ignores all her other children in comparison to how much affection she gives her (admitted!!!) favorite child.
12We're really close. I usually tell her whatever is bothering me and she makes me feel better. Sometimes I don't tell her things b/c I don't want her to think bad of me or whatever. We're not best friends but we're close. I trust and love her with all my heart.
13my mom is a sociopath. who is obsessed with my weight.

that's how i've been dealing with her obsession
My mom and I talk at least once a day and while we don't share absolutely everything, we do share quite a bit. We've gotten much closer since I've moved out and gotten married. Now we can b*tch about our husbands!
15It's hard to talk to my mom--she's very judgmental and while I know that "it's for my own good", it's tough to come to her when I need to talk. It's just not great to hear "I told you so" if you fall on your face and need a shoulder to cry on. I have to turn to other people to give me the kind of "motherly" comfort I need.
16I also chose other for the same reason as kazagirl. I do give my Mom some credit for finally accepting the fact that I don't care if I ever get married and the fact that I do not want children. She definitely thinks we are closer than we are and part of the problem is my sister.
17sometimes when shes mad at something else, she cools down by getting it on me. i understand that everyone else does that too (even me) but when it comes down to her telling me off kept reminding me that she is my mom; a woman that is close but far from being my best friend. and when i say that, it means that shes too good for that title and i love her.
18My mom and i don't live together anymore so no more stupid fights, she is more like a good friend... which is awesome cuz i know that no matter what i have someone to talk to. Don't get me wrong tho, she is still a mom and fulfills all her mommy duties haha
19Damn, I am with kazagirl and cubadog on this one. Cubadog is your mom's maiden name Ortiz? I could have sworn listening to you that my mother has a sister I am not aware of!
20Close but family.
21My Mom was adopted so maybe! LOL
22She is one of my best friends
23I talk to my mom a lot and she is always there for me to answer questions ranging from if I can store tomato paste in the fridge, to what qualities she thinks are important in a partner. She is the best!!
24My mom is the most supportive person ever. I don't talk to her about everything because, frankly, I don't think she'd want to hear about some of the stuff her daughter does! But she is my heart and soul and I love her to pieces. I talk to her daily even though she lives about 20 miles away. I even bought a shirt at Target that says, "MY MOM ROCKS". She cried when she saw it!
25There are some subjects in my life which is still considered to be "taboo" to talk to my mom to but I consider my mom as one of my best friends. There is no one I trust more and admire more than my mother, she is also the most positive person I have in my life for which I am eternally grateful for. Love you mommy!!!
26my mom is never there to give me any comfort. she's too judgemental and too blind that she has the same problems that sometimes when i'm expressing my emotions, it's not because i'm in dire straights. she also is always in a war with me about my boyfriend even though it sorta seems like she is okay with him from time to time. i really hate how she thinks that because i'm young, i can't have a meaningful relationship. just because i have conflict with him, it doesn't mean me and my guy don't get along or are not right for each other. i mean, i could say the same about her and my dad fighting like stuck pigs. i'm just not close with my mother. i think that the way she has treated me over the years has really taken a negative effect and that when i try to make her understand, she just shuts it out. we just don't get along. period.
27My mum and I are best friends, and it kills me that we don't live in the same city. We talk more than once a day, and she is the most amazing, caring, supportive, super woman I have ever met. When I was a teenager, we didn't get along great, but that's because we act so similar, that we would get on each others nerves. You can't tell we are related, she's blonde, a petite 5'6 with blue eyes and I am brunette, 5'8, with dark brown eyes and curvy, but when we speak, and interact with people, it's a no brainer.
My mum has been a superwoman after the death of my father and I am so blessed to have a mother who would do anything for me.
28Me And My Mum Are Extremly Close!
29My mother has now become clingy and dependent.. constantly driving me insane.... I think it's b/c i move out in a month.... but she used to be my best friend b4 i hit the age of 12...now she's still in the frame of mind that I want to spend every waking hour with her.... Oh and did i mention shes emotional.... but when she's not going crazy she's the best shopping buddy a girl can have!
30she is a cool mom. but she has issues which shes not ready at all to admit. i love her a lot, she doesnt think so. shes too busy loving my brother. though shes nice, sometimes, i wanna get away from here. one of the many reasons i wanna get married
