With all the sexually-charged commercials out there, I thought dirty ad executives could shock me no more. Well a proposed German commercial for Sprite has managed to upset my sensibilities once again by combining oral sex, a desire for Sprite, and a climactic finish. The ad crosses the line from racy to pornographic.
Creating a controversial commercial that ended up banned in Germany does create buzz for the brand. (They got us to talk about Sprite.) But I'm just not sure that comparing Sprite to semen is working for the product here. What do they want us to think? Semen — the taste that refreshes! NOT.
Sprite isn't the first company to have women perform sex acts on a product. Remember Burger King's ad in Singapore that had a woman attempting oral sex on a BK Super Seven Incher? Do you think the trend of pornographic ads will continue with success, or do you predict a backlash?

5That is the most ridiculous thing ever. I had to laugh, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to think it's funny or sexy. Doesn't really make me want to go out an buy Sprite, as I find Coke to be much more refreshing than semen. Seriously though, I wonder who comes up with this stuff? It's like their marketing team is made up of 19 year old frat boys.
6Our general reaction may be a backlash but it seems to me that ad executives are now using our backlash as advertisement. They're not stupid, they know how to strategically work our emotions to their benefit.
Yeah so the ad gets pulled but now the product knowledge reaches far more people than it would have if we never made a fuss.
7lol when i saw it on perez hiltons site i laughed and sent it to a few ppl i know. it doesn't make me want to go get a sprite, but that i might be because i don't drink soda anymore

10This is a spec ad and it was on Gawker. The BK one is real, but this was never meant to be broadcast.

13leslievanhouten, thanks for clearing that up. I thought this couldn't be a real German ad. For one thing, the Sprite can is different from the ones you get in Germany and the sentence at the end "Befolgen Sie Ihren Durst" isn't correct either (instead it should be "Gehorchen Sie Ihrem Durst" or "Folgen Sie Ihrem Durst").
14Also, if this had actually been banned, the German press would have been all over it and their was nothing about this in the German media.

20I think it is all just over the top. I know the saying sex sells but this is just ridicules. It is not that they are trying to sell us on pornographic advertising they take it to the preference extreme as well. Like the Quiznos commercial that depicts a young man as the cook and the oven suggesting to him, come on put it in me, in a very deep manly voice. Obviously this commercial was directed toward a Gay audience. Personally I think it was wrong and I have stopped eating Quiznos… It is bad enough that I have to use parental control on my television set to keep my children safe from the plethora of sexual and violent programming, but now I have to monitor the commercials. I wish the bigwig advertisers would get a clue. I don’t want my soda to remind me cum nor do I want my subs to remind me of a penis or a gay orgy.
