On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy, Jr. took the fateful flight that ended in his death. I remember watching the news with my family as authorities looked for the missing Kennedy. As we sat around the TV, my parents recounted their memories of little John-John, and we were all so shocked when they announced that he had died. With no real connection to JFK, Jr. I still felt a whole lot of real sadness.
The 10th anniversary of JFK, Jr.'s death and the attention given to the recent death of Michael Jackson remind us that the death of a celebrity can really hit home. From John Lennon, to Princess Diana, Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, or John F. Kennedy, Jr., there have been so many famous deaths that have left the public collectively grieving. Which celebrity death affected you most in your lifetime?

Dolce & Gabbana
Agnes B
Luella
Honestly? None of them. It's not like I knew these people. I don't get wrapped up too much in celebrity worship.
1Michael Jackson stuff is still all over the media.
It did actually hit me very hard. I know it sounds goofy, but it almost seemed like he wasn't real, so how could he die. Hard to explain.
and Princess Di, it still seems SO unnecessary.
2Princess Diana for sure.
3Princess Diana. I cried and cried watching her funeral.
4I LOVE music so MJ's death actually had me sitting and thinking for a couple of days. When Stevie dies.... maaaan....
5none of them. yes i felt bad for their family and friends but i didn't know them.
6MJ. Because I grew up listening to him.
7Bernie Mac. Because it was so sudden (from pneumonia...and I got really sick around the same time, so I was scared for myself as well)
Left Eye. Another artist I grew up listening to. Taken too soon.
Aaliyah. Another person who died so young. And I travel alot, so it really got scary.
Michael Hutchence from INXS. I LOVED them in high school, and I especially loved him. Never Tear Us Apart was one of those songs I listened to over and over when I was a teen.
David Foster Wallace, the author. One of my favorite authors, I was crushed when he committed suicide. His writing was always so on point. This was a case of someone brilliant who fought depression and failed.
8I am still very sad that MJ died. I really liked his music. But it's not like I knew him, so it's not as devastating. It makes me think that all of us have a very limited time, and when you see someone all the time on TV or in real life, when they die, it's really shocking.
9I thought Steve Irwin's was so very sad. I wasn't a huge fan of his show or anything, but he just seemed like such a nice guy and to have such a young family... that really made me sad.
10also Natasha Richardson... same reasons....
11OK. I admit. It was princess Diana. I was about 16 when I saw her wedding. I could never forget the story. The dress. The interviews. The whole romance and how beautiful she was. How graceful and young. We all wanted to be her. To have a life like that. A chance like that. I wanted to understand her personality and her mystery. I felt sad for her and then later on alarmed by everything that surrounded her life. I felt she came around as an authentic person among fakes and liars. She stood above the world as things beneath her fell apart. I hated what happened to her in the end. Searching for love. Then a dam car accident.
12I'd say Heath Ledger. I'm usually not terribly attached to any celebrities though, but his just seemed really unexpected. I also liked his movies a lot.
Michael Jackson on the other hand had already stopped producing big hits when I started listening to pop music, and everybody knew his health was frail, so.. that didn't affect me so much.
13Celebrity deaths don't really affect me, I don't know them. I was however affected by classmates that either died in car accidents or suicides. Also the Oklahoma City bombing and World Trade Center bombing affected me the most.
14Princess Di and JFK Jr., mostly because they happened so tragically.
15Usually celeb deaths don't affect me at all, but Heath Ledger - the suddenness of it all. He was such an icon in my teen years, it was just so shocking.
16Princess Diana. I remember it best at least.
17Layne Staley of Alice In Chains
18I know she may not be considered a celebrity in the pop culture sense, but Mother Teresa. Since her death followed Princess Diana's by only five days, it didn't get much press. I'm not downplaying Diana's death. It was terribly tragic, especially with young children, but Mother Teresa was a figure I always admired SO much.
19Definitely JFK Jr.
20To me that man had everything. Not talking just looks either.
A testament to being raised by a class act like Jackie.
Natasha Richardson...
((((
21I realize Kennedy and Princess Diana ...were extremely important political figures in the worlds society and I clearly remember both their deaths but...when I was a child I idolized Michael Jackson, dangerous was my first album ever on cassette lol, when I was six I got the making of thiller on VHS and I memorized the whole dance ...and when he died I felt like the floor fell from under me....my heart sunk I really didnt even know it would effect me so bad because I mean I didnt know him..but I went to the funeral service and Ive never cried so hard so long or so many times in one day, and when his daughter spoke my heart truly went out to her because this is what finally made him human to all of us we saw he was a father, a brother and a son and how much pain those around him were in
22Fredide Mercury (I'm a huge Queen fan) and Princess Diana.
23Probably Kurt, because when you're 12 everything seems worse... but that was around the same time as Shannon Hoon, Bradley Nowell, Jonathan Melvoin... stupid heroin generation
More recently, Joey Ramone & Joe Strummer... those hit hard
24I don't get too shaken up by celebrity deaths, mostly because, well, I don't know these people. I am always sad when we lose a great talent, though. I was bummed when George Plimpton died, when Karl Malden died, and I'll be so unhappy when Lauren Bacall and Gloria Steinem inevitably get called to that Smart and Awesome Ladies In the Sky place.
25brad renfro was a tough one. he had struggled with his demons but seemed to be getting back on track. MJ has been a sad one, too, because I was a big fan. and really, peter jennings death was a sad one too. I literally grew up watching him on the news every single day, and he died only a few months after it was announced that he was sick.
26Kurt Cobain and Heath Ledger. They both died way too young, and at the peak of their fame. Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy's deaths were also very sad too because they are two of my favorite icons and they both died around the same as Cobain.
27Oh Natasha Richardson's death was sad too...her boys are around the same age I was when my own mother died so I can empathize with their situation. Plus, she seemed like a very sweet lady and I loved her in The Parent Trap.
28I have to say Heath Ledger all the way and I still feel odd when I see him on screen...I am so interested in the mind of truly unique and intelligent but slightly tormented people and reading his past interviews, he was definitely one of a kind...
29Princess Diana was so sad, Heath Ledger's death really affected and it came as a surprise since I never really was a huge fan or anything.
JFK Jr still really sad, he really did have everything. Looks, charisma, brains, thinking about it now it's just so unfair he had to go so soon
Paul Newman esp because he is my favorite actor, incredible human being. I guess it was his time to go, he lived a good life, but still incredibly sad that he's not in this world anymore he was definitely a magnetic amazing human being, I love him. and George Harrison died too early, what a special man. sigh
30Need I even say?
31The only celebrity deaths that really effected me were:
Michael Landon because i grew up with him being my "father" figure.
River Phoenix- I had seen him play in person and he was a regular around town.
Ronald Reagan- I cried so hard watching his funeral on tv.
Phil Hartman and Chris Farley- because funny doesnt die, and they just couldnt be gone, i still cant believe it.
32All of them in some way. I don't think I can pick one.
33Princess Diana
34I can't say many celeb deaths have affected me too much, but honestly, I was really sad when Billy Mays died. He seemed like such a cool guy. I would get sad at work when people would come through the check out line and buy oxyclean or something like that. I guess everyone else recently I haven't been too connected to, or I was too young to appreciate some of the others.
35Michael Jackson.
36I would have to say Jim Henson. Such a shock, and for my generation ... a complete loss. Ugh. Check out Big Bird singing It's Not Easy Being Green at Henson's memorial. Grab a tissue.

Also Mr. Rogers.
37It's a phenomena of psychology and the culture of celebrity worship that we can see someone on television regularly and feel like we know them.
That said, I'd have to change my answer and say I definitely felt it when Phil Hartman died. I think, because comedy is something that touches your deepest essence, I have more empathy for that. He was so funny, especially on News Radio.
38Heath Ledger ... he was the same age as me ... and all of us 20-somethings in the office sat around in shock because our office is not far from where he died.
39I remember JFK,Jr's death affected me profoundly. I always loved Jackie and the Kennedy family. I guess because he was in the prime of life and to many people he held so much promise.Princess Di's was shocking s well; especially because of her young sons . I'm still shook up by MJ death; can't believe he's gone. Growing up without one of your parents is really tough. My heart goes out to his kids; He really was a loving father.
40Princess Di, Aaliyah and Heath Ledger
All of the above I can remember where I was and what I was doing and how hard it made me cry when I found out.
41For me, it was Kurt Cobain. I was a fan and just graduating high school when he died. He was like the voice of my generation.
42I don't worship any celebs, but I felt very saddened by the loss of some. Heath for the lost potential as an artist and the man who was a father.
JFK Jr for all of the potential he had to influence media and politics. There was a lot of sadness in his life. Who can forget the image of him at 3 saluting his father's casket? And he died on his way to his cousin Rory's wedding; Bobby's youngest daughter who was not yet born when her father was assassinated. I recall what his uncle Ted said at John's funeral, "But like his father, he had every gift but length of years."
43Recently Lux singer of The Cramps
44Heath was sad for me as well, i also had to deal with my little bro who was incredibly torn up over it haha
Heath Ledger
45John-John and his wonderful wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy !
46While I do need get too caught up in the deaths, ones that did leave me in shock were Heath Ledger and Princess Diana.
47#1-- Elvis Presley. I was just a little girl but I cried my eyes out! The pillow was soaking wet. #2-- Princess Dianna. I think I was just shocked for days before the tears came. I still have the newspaper for that day (front page news).
48Princess Diana, Natasha Richardson, and Heath Ledger.
49princess diana. my bff and i were both pregnant for the first time, very hormonal. she had just moved out of state and she called and as soon as i said "hello" she started crying and i started crying. our husbands thought we were freaks.
