Have you ever dreamed of a world without men? Some scientists have hoped for years that someday, somehow, they'd create sperm without the mess and fuss of sex and men. Well, that day is near.
Or here, according to one professor at the Northeast England Stem Cell Institute, who says he's doctored up the world's first embryotic sperm. Other sperm specialists (their mothers must be proud) are not so convinced test-tube sperm are up for the swim. Azim Surani, a professor at Cambridge University, said they were "sperm-like cells" and "a long way from being authentic."
So we wait and ask questions, like "what's the point?" Ideally, it would be used to treat infertile men, but you can't clone cells in 2009 and not answer questions like "Are you trying to wipe men off the face of the Earth?" The Guardian has a pair of he-said/she-said pieces musing on such a world without men. He said? You'll be bored, less productive, and too clean. And she said? We'd be peaceful, clean, and . . . bored. Glad we can agree on something!

1"What good are men?" Really?
2And that was "really" at the title.
3That's actually a legitimate question when you consider who starts all the wars and who commits all the crimes.
4anonymous, you might want to spend some time off the computer, and in a library
5I have a sneaking suspicion that no one will be calling for androcide, should this come to fruition. I quite like men, even though they can be emotionally immature.
6Well, I'm child-free by choice, so my interest in men has never been about their sperm.
I find that (some) men make good companions (and fulfill other meaningful roles).
I have a man, and I think he's wonderful (Again, his sperm and my eggs were never the issue).
7CaterpillarGirl, obviously many women have started wars in the past but generally speaking, you can't deny men cause most of it.
8"who starts all the wars and who commits all the crimes"
youre the one who said all.
9Ok, fine. I worded it the wrong way; obviously I didn't intend for it to be taken as every single war and every single crime. Just an overwhelming majority, geez.
10One could pretty easily argue that most wars have been started by men simply because many societies have been historically patriarchal, so men have been the ones with the power to start the wars.
And some people are surprised to learn that it's untrue that the overwhelming majority of crimes are committed by men.
11Last time I checked, when I'm interested in someone, it's not for their sperm. And if I'm with someone I care about, wouldn't I rather have their children than use man made sperm?
12Good to see you back, kimbo.
13Thanks, spacekat! I have been lurking around and reading the comments, but I haven't had time to actually contribute much myself.
14War and crime are started mostly by men in part because of the historical dominance of men. With time and the realization that it makes more sense for cultural survival to not marginalize an entire half of a species, women are equalizing the dominance of power. With a more empowered role women will become better represented in crime rate statistics and may even help 'cause' future wars. I reckon.
Anyway, regarding what use men are--spiders still exist right? [/Annie Hall].
I'm also compelled to read Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland again.
15has anyone ever read the graphic novel series 'Y: the Last Man'? it's a fantastic and intelligent series about what would happen if every living thing with a Y chromosome dropped dead one day. think about it: all the world's leaders (well, 90%) GONE, as well as countless engineers, doctors, religious leaders, etc. it really shines a light on where women are in the world, and who has power and whatnot. a highly recommended series.
16Ever heard the saying It's Not Nice to Play With Mother Nature? People should be careful when playing God in science. If someone wants to get pregnant without having sex because men start wars maybe they should be turned down in a psychological screening for stupidity. If a woman is not willing to touch a man to get pregnant ready to make sacrifices for a child? If these man haters have boys are they war starters too? How would a man hater treat a baby boy? Maybe people should ask themselves that. If it helps men with infertility I think that's great. But 100% lab sperm? Lets see what kind of monsters that produces. Maybe they'll be born killers or mentally handicapped. What guarantees have they got in writing for that?
17When I started my argument, I was responding more to the "what good are men" headline. I actually don't condone this lab sperm, but so many kids are raised without father figures that it probably won't make as big a difference as it appears. You have women getting pregnant all the time without a proper family and no one says anything about that. Again, something I don't condone.
18uh what? i dont want to be around guys because i need a baby ,trust me i dont .whats funny is if the question was "what good are women?" people would be freaking the f*ck out about how sexist that is and blah blah blah.anyway in closing i like men they are hot
19You'd be surprised how many people have something to say about "women getting pregnant all the time without a proper family." I'd like to know what a "proper family" is, though.
20I've got to agree with Kimbo. Women with children out of wedlock are totally judged behind their backs. And for somewhat of a good reason, it's a really bad idea if you can avoid it!
I think a proper family is not the Republican party of five from mythic days of yore - but you do know it when you see it. Mostly, it's a lot of love between the parents.
21I like men (regardless of the problems I may have with a select few lol). They make great companions as someone had already said. In fact, I think I get a long with them better than my fellow women! I don't believe we will become asexual as a human race in the future, we enjoy sex too much!
22Anonymous, alot of people agree with you. in fact anyone who took their own advice and spent some time in the library would know that the overwhelming majority of criminals are men. And men do cause all the wars. They're always trying to dominate.
23Men serve a purpose, I would not be able to open any of these jars around my house!
24Cakeshinigami, if you actually researched your own comment, and looked into a library, you would notice that not only males have started war's. If you read Phil's comment you would possibly understand the significance of why most war's are started by men, but instead of actually going out and learning something you'll probably just continue your bias outlook towards men.
25I was going to actually research some war's started by woman to follow up my comment above me.. but found this post which is going to save me time.
"Cleopatra certainly started wars, by trying to set up a rival empire to Rome, in partnership with Mark Anthony. and Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni, staged a major rebellion against the might of Rome, though she was severely provoked. Another Queen who rebelled against Rome was Zenobia of Palmyra. Like Boudicca, she was defeated, but unlike Boudicca was allowed to live.
Aefelflaed, the 'Lady of the Mercians' daughter of Alfred the Great of Wessex, fought against the Danes, with her husband the King of Mercia, and after his death led the army herself, and eventually died in battle fighting them.
Matilda of Tuscany fought against the Austrian Emperor in support of the Pope. She governed a large part of Italy in her own right, and was a major military leader.
Joan of Arc did not start a war, she participated in one. The Hundred Years War had been going on for - well, nearly a hundred years, by the time she entered it. But she was a military leader of note, who raised the seige of Orleans and had the Dauphin crowned King of France at Rheims.
Margaret of Anjou fought for her husband King Henry VI of england aginst his rival the Duke of York.
Lakshmibai (the Valiant Rani) queen of Jhansi, fought fearlessly against the British in the Indian Mutiny in the 1850s, and died in battle.
Margaret Thatcher succesfully implemented the war against Argentina in the Falkland Islands." by Louise C from answer.yahoo.com
