“They all scratched out ‘boy’ and put ‘girl’. That’s how we won.”
— Deoine Scott, left, on being chosen with her girlfriend Victoria (“Vikky”) Cruz as best couple at the South Bronx high school they attend and where they've been a couple since their sophomore year. It was Cruz who entered them into the contest and who scratched out "boy" and replaced it with "girl" first, after which other voters did the same. The couple won by a landslide, getting four times the number of votes as straight couples who'd entered. Cruz, an aspiring journalist, talks about her relationship with Scott in this NPR podcast and explains that it was easier to come out at school than at home, where her grandmother still doesn't know she's gay.

We've come a long way. Good for them!
That is fraking fabulous. What state are they in?
They make a cute couple.
I'm guessing NY, unless it's referring to another Bronx.
Yay for them and the students who voted for them. I hope Grandma Cruz comes around.
Won by a landslide? Good thing this stuff isn't important because being a lesbian couple isn't a good reason to vote for someone, which is clearly what happened here.
annon #5, wow aren't you pessimistic. how do you know that they weren't voted for being a great couple? people like you need to open up their minds.
Good for them
good for them! i was wondering how do these stories get in the news? i wonder because my high school and others in my area have had same sex couples win best couple and they were never on the news.
It's great that high school students chose a great couple without letting their gender get in the way! Awesome!
Cool.
Well I'm certain Grandma Cruz knows now! I hope it goes well with their families.
@Anon:
I doubt they were voted "best couple" BECAUSE they were lesbians. I'm betting they were just an awesome couple, since two women can have a good relationship (unless they are like the girls from my high school who were "lesbian" or "bisexual" to get more guys to have sex with them).
Nice.
For my school's senior superlatives, a lesbian couple also won for best couple!
YAY!
Hells yeah! I can't wait for this type of thing to not be newsworthy though. ^_^
Anonymous, they were voted because they were the best couple, not solely because they were lesbians. It also says they have been dating since their sophomore year, so in high school terms that is a long time! Congrats to them!
Good for them!
Aww! Yay for them, that's awesome!
WOW! Great for them... that is friggin fab
That's lovely
That's awesome. It's interesting to read that Cruz thinks it's easier to come out at school rather than at home. I have to agree, to be honest. You hear about prejudice and homophobia, but I think it's adults who are less accepting. Not through any fault of their own, but simply because of the culture they were brought up in. Homosexuality wasn't so much the norm a few decades ago.
Aww good for them! Best couple is best couple
Alot of people can learn from this.
So sweet!
Ok great. Good to know.
