Americans might not be perfect, but they have some strong opinions about what is morally acceptable and what is morally taboo. Gallup set out to rank America's standards in its latest Values and Beliefs survey. It came up with a list of actions — ranging from infidelity, to wearing fur, to capital punishment — and sorted them by what percentage of Americans found them to be morally wrong. The findings surprised me! Take this quiz to see if you can guess how most Americans see right from wrong.

hmm, eye opening!
1Can someone please tell me why more Americans find it wrong to wear fur than sentence someone to death??? That is just crazy.
2Kaz, I'm just going out on a limb but I think it may be because most people think if you are on death row you probably deserve it (many people tend to have a "guilty until proven innocent mentality" sadly) whereas an animal being skinned is purely innocent.
3Again, I don't really agree or disagree, that's purely an assumption/guess.
I find the dislike of bacon to be morally wrong.
4WOW 7/7
5I think infidelity is the only thing on this list I really find morally abhorrent.
Homophobia is more alive than I would have guessed. Hmm.
6Guess I have a good idea of the moral temperature of this country... Even if I don't like it...
7Wow, 7/7. I find it disgusting that people in this country are so...dumb. I mean, it's just so morally wrong that men like men and women like women. I must be out of my mind for thinking that is perfectly acceptable!
8ana affair is worse then sentencing someone to die? wtf??
9wow. America has some weird-a** morals
10I'm going to clone lesbians and dress them in fur. Muahaha.
11I wish Gallup would poll me one day.
12Wow 7/7! Unfortunate that my guesses are right, I was hoping Americans weren't as homophobic as I thought!
13I'm not that surprised, Americans have always seemed a bit backwards morally, in my opinion. Something that doesn't hurt anyone = horribly morally wrong, something that hurts a lot of people = completely fine. WTF!?
Personally, I think that the death penalty and animal testing are the worst things on that list, and I have yet to see a legit reason why a consentual polygamist or gay relationship is a bad thing (actually, I'm pretty sure we're more biologically wired to be polygamist and the monogamy is an entierely cultural idea).
14Yea, I got 100% I have thought about some of these things before and knew most of the answers (or thought I did and it turned out right).
Good one RachLA,
I think it's funny that maybe straight people's sexual values have sort of softened or started to disappear altogether but Gays may not be able to hold hands in public.
156/7 and I thought i didn't know americans
16Polygamy? Really? Wow...
17Hahahaaaa RachLA!!!
18Our morals do seem a bit backwards though...
woah, I somehow got 7/7.
19I'm surprised Americans know that having affairs is wrong (btw, I'm from here).
206/7
The quiz was easy, I just picked the more ridiculous options. They turned out to be right for most of the time.
21I don't understand why some of you have problems with the death penalty. The people obviously have done something to deserve it like killing a bunch of people or something. Those criminals ruin people's lives. The families of the victims can suffer from what happened for the rest of their life and the only closure that they have is knowing that the monster who did it is dead. Besides, if they aren't put on death row, the spend the rest of their life in prison so the death penalty is only speeding up the process. The criminal could escape and kill more people if they are left alive so why not put an end to them. As for wearing fur, inhumanly killing innocent creatures is nasty and unnessesary. When an animal kills another animal, they don't understand what they did or the pain they caused from killing their prey, they don't know if the animal they killed had little babies waiting for it that will now die without their mother. That's why I think that fur farmers are evil. They understand what they do and they don't care. I think supporting the fur trade is a hell of a lot worse than humanly killing a murderer.
226/7
23Morals shmorals .... Most people are complete hypocrites about these hot button issues and change their minds whenever it suits them. I wouldn't mind befriending a lesbian, fur-wearing adulteress.
@Anonymus commentor:
I have always believed the death penalty to be wrong, and have never been able to quite understand how people can put up with such barbaric practices. That, and I come from a family where death isn't viewed as something BAD but more, the next great adventure. Basically, I agree with the thought "you should celebrate a death and mourn a birth". So... to me, the worst punishment someone could put on a person is keeping them in jail (especially isolation) for a long, long time. Death is just another way out of jail, IMO.
And, if killing someone is wrong, and you put someone on death row for killing (and who knows, they may have thought they were killing for justice), then kill that person in the name of "justice" aren't you just doing what they did?
24So 45 % of all Americans think having a baby outside of marriage is morally wrong?! Please, does someone know how many American babies are actually born outside marriage?? I'm curious...
25See for death penalty vs wearing animal fur I think they're both wrong and for gays vs gambling I think they're both morally acceptable so I'd be a bad person to poll.
267/7. Unfortunately I am pretty good at guessing what Americans find morally objectionable even if I don't agree. I don't like to judge the morality of others because each person can live their own lives. My ideas of morality are specific to the kind of person I want to be. That is just my opinion.
27I got 6/7, but I definitely don't agree with most of the correct answers.... I do think that our country's moral compass is a little off, but that is just my opinion.
286/7 - needless to say, I disagreed on all fronts but guessed correctly. How surprising. NOT.
29But hey, in defense of "America" and "Americans" can I just reiterate that this was a POLL and they did not obviously survey every single American out there ... so ... needless to say I really dislike when people make mass generalizations. Not all Americans think in line with the survey results and likewise, some (or perhaps a lot) do.
30i sat with each question and though about it from a religious stand point and got 5/7. I was not surprised at all.
I am not religious but there are a loooooooot more religiously obligated people in this country than there are of me.
31to Anon: I am and have been against the death penalty for some time now. Maybe it is because I have worked for the Innocence Project or because my eyes were widened when I saw how much discretion is used when putting someone to death. Not only is it more costly than keeping someone in prison for life, there is no real way to decide if the person is ACTUALLY guilty of the crime they were committed of. Yes, DNA may be able to prove such a thing, but I have a hard time justifying putting someone to death after they have supposedly killed someone. It doesn't make sense that we would do the same action to them that we are punishing.
32LOL, RachLA
335/7. Shrug. America is America, and usually the people they poll aren't really good cross-sections of Americans anyway. Not surprised...except the wearing fur is more wrong than the death penalty one. I don't understand how *wearing* fur in itself is morally wrong (what more exactly are we violating there?)...but I do understand how killing other human beings (especially when quite a few of them have been FALSELY convicted!) is wrong.
The poll should have asked what people think "morals" or "morality" is. I would think a lot of people in the poll simply said, "well all of these are bad, but this is the worst...this is something I could live with, still don't like it though...oh well the rest of these can't be THAT bad, then..."
34I never get 7/7... time to break out the champagne!!!!!!
Some of the questions were not
exactly in comparison. Very mismatched. Why?
35Wow, I was just kidding with my answers and got a 6 out of 7. I can't believe that pologamy is thought to be worst than sucide.
36ooo wow unfortunately i new most of these i got a 6/7 but i also just picked the ignorant answers and figured that would work lol
37Anon- If you belief that life is sacred you can not support the death penalty. It costs thousands of dollars a week just to challenge the LIMITLESS appeals that death row inmates can file. Most people spend at least 15 years on death row fighting for their lives. And why does the system allow this? Because taking a life whether in the name of justice or otherwise is never something to take lightly.
123 cases have been overturned since 1973 due to evidence proving the convicted person's innocence. These are just the ones they found before they were put to death. I personally do not think that it is morally right for us to teach and force people to uphold the fact that when it comes to murder, an eye for an eye is not right nor acceptable unless the government does it
38Wow, I guess I'm not a very American, American. Answering the questions as I view them morally, I only managed A 3/7.
39Wow, I got 100% and I'm not even American...
I answered the questions according to what I thought an American would say, though. I guess my stereotyping is right? Eek.
407/7 by pretending to be a conservative republican.
I will never understand how much energy people are able to put into worrying about who other people are having sex with. I barely have the energy to be concerned with who I am having sex with.
also, the number of people opposed to stem cell research makes me want to choke a b*tch.
41I got 6/7 by choosing the answer that related to sex (affairs, homosexual relationships, babies outside wedlock, etc). I missed the question about fur vs. death penalty because sex wasn't involved
427/7, that was easy.
43Though I'm not American, I come from a pretty liberal country where prostitution is legal and there is no death penalty, I put myself in the shoes of George Bush and got them right. Haha.
44To the people who said this isn't indicative of America. It's freaking Gallup. They do the most scientific and best polls of any group. So to think this isn't "a good cross section" you probably mean they aren't speaking to the same people that I do.
In general I agree with the results. Yes I'm American. Christian, too. So basically I think divorce, homosexuality, sex outside of marriage, abortion, polygamy, cloning humans, suicide, doc assisted suicide, using embryo's for medical research and affairs are wrong.
I'm ok with "Gambling" as long as it's entertainment (using discretionary money for fun) and not really gambling (risking what you need hoping to get lucky)
I'm ok with Animal testing and wearing fur. I'm ok with the Death penalty.
Having a baby outside of marriage is fine. I don't think you should marry just because there is a baby involved and I don't think you should abort a child. If that's your situation have the baby.
Cloning animals gives us unhealthy and weak animals with a short life expectancy. It's not a pretty picture, but I'm not completely against it.
45Wow 7/7. I didn't think I'd do that well, but I did use the method some others did: tried to think as conservatively and republican as possible.
46For me the death penalty depends on the case. If there is enough real evidence to convict the person then that person should be up for the death penalty. But there is lack of evidence on a gruesome crime, that person should not be up for the death penalty. There is too many people on death row who have been convicted on lack of evidence and other things that they shouldn't be convicted of.
47people are so strange
48100% - stupid Americans...
49It amazes me that people despise murders, yet most of you idiots condone abortion which is murder. Unbelievable
