There's nothing new about a politician cheating on his wife, but the tale of South Carolina governor Mark Sanford has a different twist. Still presiding as the chief executive of the state, Sanford is treating us to the drama of an ongoing love triangle.
While the death of Michael Jackson may have distracted the media from Sanford's drama, the two women in his life are still making headlines. Shocked that her husband was continuing to see his mistress as recently as last week, Sanford's wife Jenny told the media that just like the public, she had no idea he was in Argentina. She said: "I was hoping he was doing some real soul searching somewhere and devastated to find out it was Argentina. It's tragic. . . . It's one thing to forgive adultery; it's another thing to condone it."
Meanwhile, the governor's "dear, dear friend" in Argentina has confirmed the affair. Maria Belen Chapur, a 41-year-old former reporter, released a statement yesterday saying that the media coverage "is of great pain to me, as for my two children, my family and all the great friends that I have known and harvested throughout my life and that had always been there for me."
When he gave his press conference last Wednesday, Mark Sanford seemed incapable of hiding his deep feelings for Maria. Do you think he should resign so he can sort out his personal problems? They've already caused him to lapse in his duties by leaving the country without telling anyone.

I'm not sure Sanford's detailed account of their affair was really all that necessary. And I think that maybe it has spurred all of this attention. He could have just said he had an affair and left it at that....
1ugh what an ASS. too bad you can't impeach a governor. I so admire his wife, who has ten times the balls that her disgusting philandering husband has.
2I guess I'm the only one wanting him to leave his wife?? She took this opportunity to speak...although she has known for sometime about his affair. Why now? And if its for the benefit of the children, your answer should always be, "No comment." I say everyone go with their heart, it makes no sense to sit there and misguide your children about love. You only get it purely and truly once, and it doesn't mean you don't love your kids just the same.
3YES. He has disgraced himself and the state by leaving for a week without telling anyone, and then the fact he did it for a mistress just makes it worse. You can't just pick up and leave when you're the governor. I think they should devise a way to impeach a governor for doing something stupid like this.
4If he's that truly, deeply passionately in love with his mistress (I have the misfortune of reading their e-mails the other day), he should DIVORCE his current wife. Keep being a good dad to his 4 children and GET MARRIED with this woman from Argentina.
It's BS I think that he feels the need to stay married to succeed in politics, look at some politicians like Giullani (sp?) and Newt, they're doing ok although they got divorced and stuff. So he can just STUFF It. Sure, there'd be scandal at first, but it'd die down, if he's that in love with her, he should suck it up and try not to mislead his wife and family that he loves them equally as he loves his mistress.
And yeah, he needs to resign not because of the affair, because the dude didn't tell anyone where he went for 6 days! In my workplace, if I don't show up without explanation after the 4th or 5th day, they'd assume I quit and yes, they'd FIRE me.
5This is still a job, his position. You don't get special privilege because you're a politician, and the people of your state are paying your freaking salary, by the way.
