A group of Mormons have urged the church to change its position on gay marriage for the sake of Mormon families and gay individuals who have lost rights because of the church's actions. A petition going around urges both sides of the debate to be open to understanding, forgiveness, and apology.
The group's organizer says:
"We would like the church to recognize the harm that's been done to people in the gay community, in general, but specifically to LDS gays who have tried to change their orientation to live up to the church's expectations. The effects can be really devastating to them and their families."
Supporters of the petition also point out that the Mormon teachings have made it hard for followers with gay family members to reconcile their support of their loved ones with their faith. Marie Osmond offers one high profile example of someone that did make it work — Marie doesn't think her Mormon faith should keep her from loving her gay daughter because Christ, she said "loved everyone."
Do you find it admirable that these Mormons are trying to change the ways of their religion?

Yes, I think it's admirable, but no I don't think anything's going to change.
1church dogma will not change. points of view, possibly. legal rights? eventually.
2This is a great step forward for the LDS church, and I can only hope this group makes an impact.
3I think it is admirable that some church members are urging the church to change its stance. That is a lot. Their names are basically public record to their wards once they sign a petition. That is huge in itself.
4I think that anything that makes strides toward tolerance is admirable, whether it ends up truly working or not.
5I think that's really admirable
This has put a big smile on my face.
6Good for them
7Yes and if they were a tolerant group, they would recognize the sagacity of moving forward and embrace it. However, I don't believe the mormon church to be be that forward thinking, socially. Perhaps in some aspects--as with their emphasis on tithing and harvesting. But with regards to relationships, they are as old-fashioned as other "religions," allowing 'elders' marry young girls.
8Are you kidding me? They were directly responsible for Prop 8 in California... throwing all the money at marketing to vote against gay marriage. I highly doubt that they will even bother to accept a watered down "tolerance" petition.
9I would love if the Mormon Church changed it's stance on a lot of things. As someone who grew up in Utah but wasn't Mormon, I know that it's difficult for the church to change. I just think it's sad that people can't make up their own opinions on things rather than go and do what their church says is "right".
10That sound great =) A 1rst step !
11First step is always the hardest in change
