"We know that TV is a powerful medium which gives young people messages that sex is fine, sex is great and they are not getting enough of it. . . Allowing abortion services to advertise on TV would then be saying, 'Here is a quick medical fix for the consequences of having sex.'"
— A UK doctor calls for a ban on controversial television and radio commercials for abortion clinics. A group of doctors have been voicing their opposition to the more relaxed advertising rules.

Anybody with a solid family/community/spiritual background will not take abortion lightly even with it advertised via the media.
1This has been said about abortions and sex education in general before, so I'm not surprised.
I don't think it's necessarily true...or if it is, the same phenomenon should be seen in advertisements for other family planning options as well. We have commercials for both PP (though less frequently) and pregnancy crisis centers here. I don't know the stats, but I don't think advertisements make women any more or less likely to use their services. I'd like to believe that most people take abortion fairly seriously if they are considering it as an option, if not for the moral implications then definitely because it is a *medical procedure*.
2Oh, Come on Tres. Women with access to abortion will have more promiscuous sex, just like people with car insurance drive more dangerously and people with health insurance will run with scissors. Get real. It's a life, not a choice.
3Exactly spacekatgal
Teaching kids about condoms also encourages sex, doncha know?
4Abortion is a way to un-screw yourself if you happen to accidentally get pregnant. However, I don't think abortion taken lightly by anyone. But really, if there is something out there that people can take advantage of, they will. People become less diligent about safety when they know that in the event that somethings happens, they will be taken care of.
Anyone who is intelligent will stop and think about what they do before they do it. I don't stop taking BC because I know there is Plan B and abortion. Just like I don't speed into a telephone pole because I have insurance. Some people are morons. Some people decide they don't want to screw themselves over.
5That's such sh*t, I cannot believe it. Abortions are not fun, easy procedures, and any intelligent woman will most likely consider all of her options; plus, they are expensive, and can be hard to find! I refuse to believe that anyone would decide to stop taking birth control because they know they can get an abortion.
Besides, if it's a legal medical service, banning it contributes to the culture of taboo surrounding abortions. I'm not saying we should be jumping for joy about them, but I don't think it's right to treat them like dirty, shameful procedures, and demand that the woman guiltily atone for the rest of time because she exercised her right to choose her own future.
6*facepalm*
7Did IQ's just drop? I agree with spacekat. If you thought an abortion was a way for avoiding consequences you're an idiot. Abortions can still be dangerous, expensive, and you could wind up not being able to have a baby when your ready. Is someone going to go through surgery and recovery for four months at a time and then jump back into a bed rather than a birth control pill. Huh?
8Say again? You'd wind up dead in a hospital. There should be a way to make a few tasteful messages.
