Move over Grey Gardens, there's a new cat-lady documentary in the gah-den. The trailer for the dutifully titled Cat Lady ("when cats mean 'meow' to you than people") opens with a former banker taking stock of the kittens living in her house. (All 123).
Debuting this week at the Silverdocs film festival in Washington DC, the documentary follows four women who fit the cultural stereotype of cat ladies — women of a certain age with one, or 100, too many felines. While it's meant to be an emotionally honest look at women whose self-worth is linked to cats, it's, also, inevitably funny. Because, really, if you're going to put whiskers under your nose and mee-oww to the camera, the world is going to laugh. And laugh.

I don't care how many cats anyone has - as long as you have the means to feed them and take them to the vet as needed. However, it's rarely the case that anyone with so many cats can honestly say they do.
1I do feel for them, though. I have to cats and two dogs, three of which were rescues, and some might say that's too many.
yikes. I think these women have some serious problems. And the cats are used as a distraction
2I get called a cat lady all the time by my friends (jokingly of course). I have 2 cats that were rescues and 1 that I kind of got on purpose. That's 3 total and they are all very well cared for and loved. If another cat needed an emergency home I would take it in. I'm all about giving animals good homes not collecting them to improve my self-worth.
3There are two different issues, and two different types of women, portrayed in this video.
I think the women who were taking in several cats to give them a better home are doing the right thing. If they can provide for the cats and keep them safe, then why not have multiple pets?
However, for two of the women (the young one wishing for a family and the older one talking about how lonely she is), having the cats around isn't going to help their real issues at hand. I feel really bad for them because it's like they are using their cats to protect themselves from going out into the world and interacting with real people.

I missed whatever gene it is that makes women like cats - I'm a dog person all the way.
5That's exactly what I thought when I saw this, bgorgeouss. At least they can admit they have problems - that's the first step to getting help.
6I don't think the younger one said she wanted a family; she stated a fact, that she did not have a husband or kids for which to care, thus she adopted cats. If someone is able to take care of them, why shouldn't they save cats from certain death? And yes, there are some lonely cat ladies out there, but there are multitude of lonely non-cat-ladies as well. Geez, half the world is on anti-depressants. I love the last lady's comment on how the people so callous that they are able to watch animals freeze to death are really the crazy ones. Touche.
