MTV News came up with what it considers the top five cultural milestones for the last graduating class of the decade.
Here's what they came up with:
5. Gay marriage
4. Twitter
3. Twilight
2. Lady Gaga
1. President Obama
Here's how one irate recent graduate responded to the list:
Just omit the middle three and pretend like nothing happened. Just, go five to one. I'm PART of this generation and I am amazed at the choices. But maybe it's because I graduated a whole entire year ahead of them that I realized how stupid my generation is. I mean, I do not even think we would notice if the list went from five to one. We'd just clap our hands and move on to the next shiny, unimportant thing, all the while ignorant to anything beside auto-tuning and Robert Pattinson.
Whether you've just graduated or are old enough to be the parent of an '09 graduate, what do you think about MTV's list and/or this commenter's assessment of the so-called Millennials or Generation Y?

I don't think this angry kid realizes they mean pop culture.... not general culture or 2009 history. lighten up.
1I absolutely agree with the opinion stated by this fellow graduate!! I'm 18 and to tell you the truth most of the time i am left wondering if our,MY generation is really that shallow, stupid and uninterested in anything else besides self-prompting, Robert Pattinson's relationship status and the constant craziness surrounding Lady Gaga. I am not trying to make these mass-culture "phenomenas" seem unimportant or anything close to that- it's just that in my opinion they are nothing more than another way of controlling the easily-changed opinion of the masses!
apart from that - even the president now seems somewhat of a celebrity, doesn't he?
2Even if it IS cultural milestones, I'm still a bit surprised. Lady Gaga over Twilight? Not that I don't like Lady Gaga, but I guess I underestimated her sphere of influence. And how the hell did Twilight even make this list? It's not a *milestone* (there have been other - and BETTER! - vampire series before Twilight); it's a trend [whether it's flash-in-the-pan or not, only time will tell]. Twitter I think existed before this year, but it's tremendous growth in popularity and cultural influence would make it worth of a space in the top 5.
I agree in part with the angry kid...the really sad fact is that we've gotten so hooked in pop culture that FREAKING MTV can make an "influential" list of Top 5 Cultural Milestones...it's the iGeneration indeed.
[I'm showing my age - I graduated from college last year!]
3Gay marriage and Obama definitley, and maybe I kinda get Twitter, but Twilight and Lady GaGa? I suppose they are kind of big pop culture things, but "cultural milestones"?
4Wow, they called my generation slackers when the Miliennials are working for the real title.
5I hate what "my generation" is becoming in the press: whiny, praise seeking, know it alls.
6Symphonee, you can thank the helicopter parents.
7lol, is the graduate envious of the disco ball generation? or maybe the macarena group?
8I feel like "Cultural Milestones" is sort of a weird title for things like Twitter, Twilight, and Lady Gaga. Like other posters said, they're more pop culture icons or something. I may not like Twilight, but 2009 has certainly been the year of Twilight. The only choice that I think is REALLY weird is Lady Gaga - I mean, I like her, but she's not particularly revolutionary. I'm a little sad that Brit's comeback didn't get a shoutout
9lighten up! its mtv.
10Ahhhhhh, i'm so sick of hearing about lady gaga! when will the madness end?!?
11My question is: who cares what MTV thinks are the cultural milestones of 2009? Not me!
12I can see why the kid was irked (I'd hate if my generation was defined as Twilighters) but it's MTV so he or she shouldn't take it too seriously.
13YAY GAGA
