When British scientists discovered, to their surprise, that men have a greater risk of cancer than women, they came upon an explanation that has nothing to do with biology: women take better care of themselves.
The new study looked at cancer that afflicts both men and women and found that men were 40 percent more likely than women to die from such cancer and 16 percent more likely to get it in the first place.
Researchers pointed out that men typically put off reporting symptoms to doctors. Men are also less aware that smoking, excess weight around the waist, and high alcohol intake all increase the risk of cancer. As for their diets, men are better at avoiding diet cola and highly processed "diet" snacks, but they're lazy about getting their vegetables and eat too many calories overall.
Since it's Men's Health Week, now might be a good time to remind the men in your life to schedule a doctor's appointment. Make one for yourself while you're at it!
Do you take better care of your health than the men in your life?

I'm pretty sure the tag "breaking news" can be removed here
1Yeah, no surprise. Trying to get my husband to be aware about basic things with his health is like pulling teeth. But - diet cola is bad for you? Really? I would think 100 calories of high fructose corn syrup would be way worse. What's wrong with diet coke?
2Spacekat, with Diet Cola its not the calories that you must fear its the artificial sweeteners that the makers try to pass off as harmless. They are very detrimental to your health overall.
3How is it bad for you? Do you have a link so I can educate myself? Thanks for the share!

I like this link because it has the "pros" and "cons" of artificial sweeteners (and for me, the amount of cons far outweigh the pros)
I also like this one:

And here are two from FitSugar:

And BTW: Let me please say how nice it is to be asked nicely about my sources and such, a lot of times I've seen people get really nasty about "Whats your source?!" and its just nice to be asked in a non-nasty way.
I tried to pick ones that aren't from people selling faux-sugar or people selling "natural" sugar alternatives.
5Just waiting for my comment with links to post, lol. Gimme a sec,
6Smacks, I read all of that first link, which took a while! It was a real eye opener about the science of these sweeteners.
I would have to say that I'm not sold on the dangers. According to that link, the science saying saccharine causes cancer was later discredited. As for the rest of them, isn't the message "drink these in moderation?"
I'm not saying this to be defensive - I'm curious why you've come to the conclusion that normal coke is better than diet coke?
