Dear Sugar--
I lost weight and I lost my period as well. I know the danger of being infertile if I keep losing weight so now I'm gaining weight. Will I get my period again?

Dear Worried Winnie--
Losing weight can definitely affect your menstrual cycle. I'm wondering how much weight you lost. If you are at an unhealthy weight, or exercising way too much, your body will basically shut down certain functions to keep the important ones going. Your body also knows that if you are underweight and not getting the proper nutrition, there's no way you could grow a healthy fetus inside you.
Your body is telling you something by skipping periods, so I'm glad to hear that you are gaining weight again. Once your body gets back to a healthy weight for your body type, your period should come back again. I would definitely talk to your doctor and get some medical advice as well. They may be able to help you figure out how to reach your weight goal in a healthy way. Good luck Winnie.

amenorrhea is the medical term for when you stop having your period for 3 or more months. basically, it is your body's way of letting you know that it is not fit to be pregnant. once you get back to a healthy lifestyle, your period will typically return.
Athletes often experience this because they have so much muscle and so little fat. Anorexics also have similar symptoms.
different medication and lifestyle activities can also influence your period. How long has it been since you had your period?
There is the possibility of damage to your body. i would talk to a Dr about it.
1I lost my period for a while in HS due to weight loss, and got it back after some weight gain. That is typical. It's rare that the period disappears forever and is usually only associated with extreme, prolonged cases of anorexia.
Anyway, as with several questions posted here recently, my primary response is: Go see a doctor!
2i have a family member who ate nothing but apples (because of the negative calories) for more than a year. she lost her period for about a year and a half. after six months or so of starting to eat healthy, she's now back to having her regular menstrual cycles. try to eat healthy (fish is apparently great for this) and try not to stress out. i wish you all the best (:
3A friend of mine has always had her period maybe 2-4 times a year. Her doctor never found anything wrong with her, and she was happy with it (who wouldn't be!). We became roomates and started eating healthy, and she's back to once a month and our cycles match now. I bug her and tell her I did it so she'd have to suffer like the rest of us females!
4i'm in the same boat as WorriedWinnie... I exercise about 5-6x a week. I'm 5'4 and I weigh from 115-117 (my weight fluctuates). I went for about 6 months without having my period. Got it for one month, and then it disappeared for 11 months. My dr. prescribed me birth control pills which I took for 3 months. My period came during the 3 months I was on the pill. Now that I'm off the pill, my period hasn't returned... It's a bit frustrating because it's hard to make lifestyle changes, such as decreasing my fitness level if that's what it takes to get my period back. Or to eat more because I've already grown accustomed to how I eat and I eat pretty healthy. I just saw my dr. last friday and she will be administering tests (i had blood drawn), so i'm hoping to get some definite answers as to what may be causing my absent menstrual cycle.
5Apples have negative calories?? really???
6I'm sorry to say but apples do NOT have negative calories. 1 medium-sized apple has about 70 calories. Apples are healthy for you because they have fiber, so they help keep you regular!
7ohh. my bad !
8well..if you count the picking the apple up, chewing, swallowing, and digesting...it could have negative calories, I mean you burn like 70 an hour just by breathing...
9see a doc and you will be prescribed some hormonal pills to regulate your period.
i lost a lot of weight some years back and my periods became irregular and i couldnt stop bleeding!! so i went to a doc, had a pap smear done and took the pills and now the period is regular.
the downside? i gained back the weight! but that's another story altogether.
10MMM! I'm in the same boat too, but the problem with me is that i started gaining weight through my high school yrs. and i stopped getting my period and now I'm trying to loose weight and i finally got my period. but its been two months since then and i haven't got another one. and the doctor only gives me birth control!!!
11I am worried about this topic as well. I haven't gotten on my period and I guess I have an "eating disorder". Well I know I do but unclear on which label (whether it's anorexia, bulimia, or etc) because I have all the behaviors associated with these.
Anyway, I am 5 7 and weigh about 115. I think this is normal but apparently my perception is totally wrong because I haven't gotten on my period for almost three months and my hair is totally thinning and shredding. In spite of all these horrible things, I still find myself thinking "oh no way, I can't gain the weight because I want to fit in my size zero Seven jeans" this is so stupid, I know....but it is so hard to escape this ordeal. I should get help but then I keep thinking maybe I can beat this on my own, but then I find myself back to square one (eating very very little and then taking laxatives, chewing on 20 pieces of sugar free gum to get the laxative effects of sorbitol, or just not eating period)
I just want to feel normal again. I want my period back and I want my face to look normal and healthy. I want my hair back. I want my social life back. I'm tired of myself. I really do just want to be normal again but this is a Tennis match that I can't seem to beat because on one hand I want to change and know that I need to get better, yet on the other hand I can't get fat because I want to fit in all my tiny little clothes because somehow they make me feel "perfect"
