"The trap here for the GOP I think is enormous. I know that a lot of folks want to do the knee-jerk, you know, let’s start slammin’ and rammin’, but I think we really need to take a step back from this and deal with two things. One, the historic aspect of it, OK, acknowledge it but then move on to the substance of the conversation about what this woman believes and why she believes it."
— Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele's oddly phrased advice in a radio interview. He's referring to how Republicans and conservatives should stop attacking Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

It's a little ironic...did they do that with electing Steele as Chair of the RNC *right after* Obama was elected??
1lol - "slammin' and rammin'" - I really don't think this guy is doing the Repubs any favors every time he opens his mouth.
2I met Michael Steele more than a few times, and found him to be very personable. He's not a liberal, so I'm not surprised when he's a bit of a jerkstore on the red meat conservative issues. That said, I have no problem whatsoever with this quote.
3I don't think it is ironic whatsoever. Bush had not one but two African Americans in his cabinet. Maybe it is ironic the Democrats went for someone like Obama.
Frankly, gender, race, sexuality and whatever else should not be a factor in who should become the next new Supreme Court Justice. What should be looked at is whether they can interrupt the Constitution and the laws as they should be read, not a possible way to legislate their views. Looking into their past judgment calls from the bench.
4You know what? This is the last straw. I'm an old Dear Sugar fan, and I also happen to be a Republican, and I'm sick of coming here and seeing anything conservative bashed on constantly, be it Miss California or Mr. Steele.
I don't find anything strange about what he said. He's saying let's acknowledge that this is an historic nomination, but let's also look at her qualifications and her history on the bench. What's wrong with that??
I will no longer be checking out this site.
5I don't think this statement is weird at all. In fact it's possibly one of the most logical and non spun political statements I've heard in a while. I think he's absolutely right. It's great that they are nominating the first Latina to the court, but it's more important to find out how she rules and what her past judgements from the bench have to say about how she'll interpret the Constitution now. What's wrong with that?
6oh and I don't know exactly what the ramming and slamming thing is about but I get the gist of what he's saying
7Anonymous, you're not alone. I'm leaving too.
8Why are we letting Jabba the Hut/Rush Limbaugh be the spokeman for our party??? Newt Gingrich, usually an informed and thoughtful commmentator, really missed on this one!!!!
We shouldn't be picking fights on this appointment. Of course the President will appoint more liberal judges than we'd like to the bench. We appoint conservatives. Let the Senate Judiciary Committee pretend that it and its staffs are reading all 3,600 of Sotomayor's opinions over the summer, and if the ample evidence provided by 17 years experience on the bench warrants it, say OK, and go on to something more important. Like how we're going to regroup, what are our countering and positive solutions to this massive spending, and who do we want to be the spokesman, here. Shouldn't it be Mr. Steele?
9I don't get what's wrong with this? And I love him. I think he's fantastic.
Anyways, to the people who think that he just got chosen BECAUSE he's black, my opinion is that any woman or person of color who really makes it in the Republican party is there because they are truly smart and really deserve it, because they don't have as many hangups about appearing diverse or choosing a white candidate over any other one...
