Dear Sugar,
I had sex one month and three weeks ago, while I had my period, and the condom ripped. One month later, when I was supposed to get my period, I never got it. Another three weeks have passed, and I still have not gotten it. I feel all the symptoms of pregnancy: tired, breasts hurting, lower back hurting, cramping, nausea (non-stop). Could I be pregnant even though I had sex on my period? Could there be another reason why I haven't gotten my period? I was on birth control pills for about a year but I got off about four months ago. Can that affect it? My periods have been fine and on time since then, EXCEPT NOW! Please answer and just to let you know, I'm 17 years old.

Dear Am I Pregnant Pam —
Technically speaking, you ovulate about 2 weeks before your period, so if you have sex while you have your period, the egg has already passed through your fallopian tube and is traveling out of your body. It is unlikely that you can get pregnant if you have sex when you have your period, but there is a rare possibility that it could happen.
The best thing to do if you suspect that you are pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test, or better yet, talk to your doctor and get a test there. I know you are under 18, and probably don't want to tell your parents, but definitely confide in a trusted and responsible friend so you are not going through this alone. They can be there when you get the results back from your test.
Another thing about periods - they can be affected by emotions, illness, or stressful situations. If you were worried or sick at the time you were supposed to ovulate last month, it's possible that you ovulated late, which would then make your period late. You were also on birth control pills for any amount of time, going off them can also affect your cycle. Again, the best thing to do is take a pregnancy test so you'll know for sure. Good luck Pam and make it a point to always practice safe sex.

Not only can stress lead to a missed period, but lack of nutrition can. Eat well! Also, like Dear Sugar said, if you're very anxious go see a doctor or go to the drugstore for a testing kit.
If you want confidentiality, look for a Planned Parenthood clinic in your area and they will test you for free.
1I totally agree with DearSugar!
2You are asking us if you are pregnant? Honey, go get a kit for god's sake, or to a doctor, or to planned parenthood. What are we going to tell you???
3You took the words right out of my mouth, pop. You need to take a test, Pam. Go to the store and buy a home pregnancy test. That will give you your answer.
4Yea you really need to go to the doctor or buy a test, its really the only way you'll find out. Good luck!
5Like everyone said above mine, you won't know by just guessing. Take a test and follow the directions EXACTLY to ensure you don't get a false positive.
6hm same as my problem
7when i went off the pill after taking it a long time i didn't have a period for like 2 months and i thought i was going to explode but i just took a home test so i didn't have to worry
8I think it can take up to a year after taking any kind of birth control before your cycle becomes regular again. That and the stress you are under are probably just causing it to be late.
I'm sure your period will come the day after you take a home pregnancy test and find out that you are not pregnant.
9Pam, if your writing into an advice column about this instead of just taking an at-home pregnancy test you are too immature to be having sex. Go to Planned Parenthood for a pregnancy test and get better informed about sex!!
10I agree with Auddie. And you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that you CAN get pregnant while menstruating (although the chances are very low). And you can get STDs too. Sometimes, especially if you're young and you have short or irregular periods, ovulation can occur right after you've stopped bleeding or while you are still bleeding. An egg can stay in your uterus for about 1-2 days and spermatozoa can live there for up to 6 days. You do the math. Yes, the chances are low, but it can still happen. Just take a pregnancy test and next time try to get informed before you're getting it on, not after it.
Btw, nowadays we use the term safer sex (rather than safe sex) to refer to the responsible use of contraceptive methods, because none of them is 100% safe, only abstinence (which means no sex at all).
11A few months ago, I thought that I might be pregnant - I missed a period, had some nausea, all the same symptoms that you have. I'd never missed a period before in my life so I started freaking out! I took a home pregnancy and it was negative. But I still didn't feel good, so I went to the doctor and double checked. She said that the over the counter pregnancies tests are incredibly reliable - so try one!
12as everyone else has said, i don't understand why you would not just go and pick up a pregnancy test. this just seems so logical to me that i do not even understand why it wouldn't be considered and you're relying on what you've heard/been taught/etc.
you've been off birth control for months and everything was fine...until now. wouldn't that just kind of make you wonder? It can take up to a year for you to start ovulating again but it also can take as little as a couple of months. I'm just still so confused as to why someone would wait almost 2 months just to take a pregnancy test to make sure (but that's because i'd be panicked and i would have grabbed one if it was 2 days late).
I agree with Auddie - if you have to write an advice column instead of actually going to take a pregnancy test or see a doctor, then you are not ready to have sex. And please, do NOT rely on the internet for your information!
13I agree, just go get a test, the sooner you do it, the sooner you will know and the more time you will have to decided what to do if you are pregnant. I was listenting on the radio the other day to this one show were anyone can call and ask sexual questions and someone asked the same thing, the doctor told them that it is possible to have irregular periods a while after getting off the pill, so that could be one possiblity. If you are scared then just tell someone who you really trust to go the store and buy the test with you and wait for the results. Sometimes having someone is comforting than just to do it by yourself. Another thing you can do is just go to your doctor and ask him/her to do the test and if it comes out negative, he can tell you the reasons as to why your period is not coming. Whatever happens, remember everything is going to be fine.
14all the same as above- and keep in mind, if you're worried you might be pregnant, your body might start producing these symptoms when there's really nothing there.
15the only person who can answer your question, is mr. pregnancy test.
16auddie is right; go get better sex education. Don't ever go out and do anything that you're not well informed about, especially if the consequences can be as big as the ones from unprotected sex.
17go to a clinic and get a test.. better to be safe then sorry.. it still would be early so you would still have alot of options
18your bodys still growing the occasional missed period can happen.
19Go get a pregnancy test and take it.
20Go to your doctor or a clinic for a very accurate pregnancy test.
This could also be a delay in your cycle do to stress.
You can get pregnant ANYTIME, including while you're on your period. I know the book always says, "about two weeks after your period." However, all three times that I have gotten pregnant by my husband, it was either right before or right after my period... not two weeks after. The other thing is sperm can live in your body for 5 days... so if you ovulated immediately after your period was over and there was still sperm there... well, there you go.
Find a Pregnancy Resource Center and you can take a free pregnancy test. They will also give you resources for getting care (such as getting medical coverage through the state, etc...). If you are pregnant, be sure to see an OB/GYN as soon as possible to ensure you recieve proper care so you can have a healthy baby (even if you plan to place the baby for adoption rather than keep it). Also, be sure to tell your parents. I know it's tough, but you won't be able to hide it forever, so you might as well tell them sooner than later so they can help you.
21yeah! do the test
22have faith !
I suggest reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It explains everything about your body. Seriously, stuff nobody ever told me and neither did my OB/GYN. As others have mentioned, please take the test.
23Please go see a doctor!!! New studies have proven that it is possibel to ovulate more than once at different stages during your cycle...this means you can get pregnant while on your period!!! If you are pregnant it is imperative you seek prenatal care!!!!!!
24U could well be.... I am 9 weeks pregnant, did a pt a day after and it was positive. Are u getting any pregnancy symptoms?
25because that show you are pregnant
26when you are having sex you have to be careful cause if you are having sex and you don't want to get pregnant you have to make sure that the condom fix good cause if it don't you will get pregnant
