It sucks when someone breaks up with you, but the mode in which they do it can ease the blow and at least show you that person cared — or wasn't a total chode who wasted your time.
Alas, some people are too chicken to do it in a respectful manner, so they slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan . . . by texting, emailing, or just up and disappearing. Gorgeous Isabella Rossellini recounted once the way eccentric filmmaker David Lynch broke up with her — by calling her and saying, after years together, "I don't love you anymore." Whoa!
What's the lamest way someone broke up with you?

My first boyfriend broke up with me by telling me, "I just have too much homework to have a girlfriend right now." Granted, he dumped me face-to-face, but come on! What a lame excuse.
1Email. To my work email, in the middle of a busy day no less. Lame is the only way to describe that whole scenario.
2In a letter, read to me by him, that his friends helped him write earlier that day. In my car in front of his house, he wouldn't let me come in. I didn't get to keep the letter.
(I should note here, been the dumper in horrible places as well - aka while canoeing in the middle of a lake.)
3By phone stating that I don't cry enough for him, and that I don't speak fluent Spanish.
I think I told him to kill himself before hanging up.
4I guess the lamest way was in public in the middle of the day, so I had to spend the rest of the afternoon sitting in class broken-hearted. It was so out of the blue, but I'm so glad he did it, otherwise I might still be with the same lame guy.
5In the car on the way to a friend's birthday party he told me he was dating someone else (after 1.5 years together). I should have made him get out and walk home, but we went to the party anyway and I had to act like nothing was wrong.
My friend's ex dumped her via a note left on her kitchen table, along with his keys to her apartment and the gift she had given him for his birthday a few days before. The note simply said, "met someone else." They had been together 2 years and were talking marriage. In hindsight it's so good that they broke up, because she found out he had a network of prostitutes (he travelled for business a lot) he would sleep with during their relationship.
6facebook, enough said.
7dm8bri, the note break-up reminded me of the post it break-up on SATC.
I havn't really had any bad break-ups, the worse probably was over the phone because he was living in another state at the time.
8In college, an amazing guy I knew there, a friend, was killed in a car accident... I was devastated. A couple of nights later, I had literally just gotten home from the memorial service, and my boyfriend came over and broke up with me, because he "liked someone better than me".
Feels like it was yesterday.
9He went to drill one weekend and never called. . .one of his friends told me he was breaking up with me a few days later. Such a coward.
10Let me take them out on a nice date first and then told me when it was over. Now that's cold. I think I was 23 only the second person I ever dated. I was very naive and new to the whole thing but that definitely super charged my wisdom.
I also hate cowards if you go on a few dates with someone and you realize hey I'm not feeling it just be honest and say hey you're a cool person but it's just not clickin for me. If I were on the other end of that yeah I might be disappointed but at least I can go away from the situation with some respect for that person. Not bad feelings for a coward who just turns their back with out a word. On the other hand if you're a nut yeah just turn around and walk the other way....lol
11went to visit a guy in new york that i'd been dating for a few months (flew across the country to see him & spend a week with him) & after he sent me to spend the night at our mutual friends' house because he had "a lot of work to do" (wtf?) he called me the next morning while i was walking around central park waiting to meet back up with him & broke up with me because "long distance was too hard."
let's go over this: flew across the country to see him, got dumped over the phone while i was in the same city as him.
12Hum i just didn't like when that guy i was crazy about told me "i love you... but i wanna make a break" and never took me back.
13xD
I went to visit my mom in Washington from Arizona and went online to say hi to my boyfriend. I kept getting a weird vibe from him so I asked him if he loved me and if he was my boyfriend and he said he wanted to break up because he was moving and didn't want to have a long distance thing. It broke my heart because he was my first love and when I got back he didn't move.
14Over a text message... except I was the one who did it. trust me though, he deserved it.
All my other breakups have been civil, and in person, though.
15My first "boyfriend" broke up with me the first time by having his cousin do it for him before homeroom, and the second time he broke up with me he just left a voicemail for me while I was in driver's ed. I even remember what he said: "Hey it's me, I just wanted to tell you I don't want to go out with you no more, bye"... wtf?
16Right before winter break in college, at a Jimmy John's sandwich shop, while being serenaded by a singing animatronic Christmas tree.
17I moved.
18I moved about 500 miles away and never said a word to my now ex-boyfriend.
I was in Mexico on vacation, I had let my BF borrow my car while I was out of town and he was supposed to pick me up upon my return. I called him the day before I was flying back to confirm he'd be at the airport only to learn he had used my car to take another girl to San Diego so he wasn't able to pick me up from the airport. I guess I officially "ended" it, but that was the dick move that broke the camels back.
19I've never been broken up with, but there's one time I was 'breaking up' with a guy I just started dating (because he was too pushy and didn't respect me when I said 'no'), and the last thing he said to me 'Do you have a sister?'
20i told an ex that i wasn't happy and i thought we should talk about it.... and i never heard from him again. so i guess i initiated it, but he was too much of a coward to even talk. he wouldn't even answer an email! clearly i'm better off!
21totally stopped taking my calls and just tried to act like i didn't exist. i ended up leaving a letter on his front door step telling him i couldn't date a loser. the next time he saw me he was on his knees in tears asking for me back. and he had a small penis, so i got the the last laugh.
22I had a guy I saw 5 out of 7 nights a week suddenly say to me 'Do you want to come to my wedding?' I found that rather tacky.
23Marci ^ 8-0 I don't even have words for that one...just wow.
My worst one is nothing compared to most of these, but I'll add it anyway. And it was like 5 days ago, so it's still stinging...my bf of almost 8 months broke up with me over the phone saying he didn't even think it was worth it to see me in person again to get his stuff back. He lives 20 min. down the road.
24I had a boyfriend break up with me by changing his facebook status to single. I found out while I was at work, when a friend who had seen it called me to ask if I was okay and if she should come over. That's the height of douchebaggery.
In the end, it was for the best - I was unhappy in the relationship, he treated me pretty much like sh*t, and I didn't feel I knew how to get out of it (I was only 18, hadn't dated much before, and he was very controlling).
25On AIM, while i was away. Great thing to come back to lol
26Through Southwest Airlines...he had cancelled my flight to see him. When I called about the cancelled flight...I was told a man cancelled it for me
27On AIM. "I can't be committed to one person for too long."
28This was after barely 3 months of dating. He had issues..
In high school, my first real boyfriend approached me with a group of his friends, and THEY told me while he stood behind them. I laughed.
He didn't even talk to me!
29My first high school boyfriend broke up with me over myspace. We had been together almost 3 months. .....I came home from school to a message saying he wasn't happy anymore. No explanation other than that, but now it makes so much sense. He's gay no wonder I couldn't make him happy. Haha
30My first love broke up with me while we were on vacation together - AT THE END OF THE EVENING, IN FRONT OF THE TENT. Where do you go from there? There's you, crying, there's him, seething, and there's a tent, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. I ran to the beach and cried all night with my head in the sand - meanwhile, a group of junkies stole my bag and I was left 500 miles away from home without a penny to my name, and a very broken heart.
Another guy who had just been talking about marriage wrote me a letter to tell me he thought I was a wh*re and had given him STD's and couldn't picture himself having children with me. This came the day after he confessed losing his virginity to a prostitute. Projecting, much??
31By text message and he refused to answer the phone when I called for an explanation. He then emailed me 2 yrs later to apologise for being a douché. =) Then he tried to get back together with me and it sooooo didn't work.
I also got broken up with over the phone when we lived less than a mile away from each other. We then had to go on holiday together WITH HIS FAMILY to Guernsey because it was all booked and I basically spent the entire time crying. No surprise! Then I moved 200 miles to go to University and he broke up with me over the phone AGAIN. Then continued behaving like we were still dating (calling me every day, sending me valentines cards etc.) for a whole year then was SURPRISED when I started dating somebody else and bombarded me with emails saying he was getting ready to propose marriage!
Sigh.
We still talk because I grew up and moved past it and he was an interesting person to know. However, the other day he accidentally sent me a text message meant for his now fiancé and he's still a moaning misery guts so I'm so happy it's over and I never got engaged to him even though it was the only thing I wanted in the nearly 4 years we were together.
32He simply never called me again. We'd been dating for several months.. we spoke on the phone one night, I never heard from him again. (well I did years later when we ran into eachother, we were considering dating again, but I wanted to be able to date other people because I had just gotten out of a nasty marriage and didn't want to be tied down to just one person and he wasn't ok with that so we parted ways again).
33I dated a guy for a few weeks in college, and then he started avoiding me & stopped talking to me. A couple of months later he tracked me down to tell me that we should probably break up. And there I was thinking that I'd already been dumped months before!
34sent me a text!
35I was dating a guy in college and he lived across the country. He flew out to spend a week with me and I just got weird vibes from him. I was going to break up with him, but he beat me to it by sending me an email that read: "Hey, you're a really nice girl, but I think I've realized that I like guys". So yeah, guess my gaydar was sort of bogus on that one, lol.
36Spectra
37that is a surprising (but funy) story lol
well that happens, but if you wasn't heart broken i guess it's okay =)
i've also been broken up with over a text. the night before we had sex for the first time after dating a few months and he'd told me he loved me afterwards. i was so confused.
also been broken up with over the phone. i guess there is no good way to break up with someone. face to face is always appreciated, in my opinion. but the worst are the ones that just disappear.
38I dated a guy who decided he was really a "woman" inside and wanted the surgery. He also wanted to remain friends, but when he started taking the hormone replacement therapy, he became very different from who he was when we met, and I just wasn't into that person at all, not as a friend or anything.
39over the phone! i was hurt for a few days, but then when i realized this guy didn't have the cajones or the respect for me to do the dirty deed in person i got over it. quickly.
40In a text message. at the bar. When he was standing across the room from me. And then he wouldn't talk about it because he went there to have fun!
41Ooooooohhhhhh BOY!
My boyfriend of almost a year just disappeared three weeks after he came to visit.
(Long distance relationship. Bad.)
This was the second time I'd seen him in person, and the second time he'd disappeared (The first time, he was "in hospital" and "Very, very sick".) He came back after a month, but that's beside the point.
It's never been official that we've broken up, since, well, I haven't seen him since... Valentine's day, ironically. We'd been texting each other since his Internet was dead, and then I texted him asking him if he'd call me, since I was almost out of credit. (I was actually buying him presents while I sent that text) about five hours later, I got a text back saying "na i dont like u" and then the number went out of service.
Hurt even more since he always used PERFECT grammar, even in texts. But, hey, I'm better off now. He was an *sshole, not dependable at all, and the whole time we were together I felt like sh*t and cried every night. Thank f*ck he's gone.
Some of the other breakups are WAY worse, though.
42I once dumped guy via e-mail. But he was just into me for sex, and I really wasn't up for that at the time.
43This guy wanted to break up but he did it by flirting heavily with a girl and having his friend tell me about the flirting. So lame.
44he broke up with me on aim..and he spelled my name wrong when saying sorry
45Wow this is a very timely post.
46I was just dumped 2 days ago via text. I texted him to confirm that we were still on for a date that evening. He texted me back saying, "No, I'm kicking it with another girl, you are too boring. Peace"
I called him to ask if he was serious, and he said yes, so I told him to not call me if it didn't work out with her. He said, "I wasn't planning on it."
We had only been dating for like 4 weeks so I'm not going to waste time being upset about it. The weird thing is 2 days earlier he had been practically begging to see me. He pulled such a bizarre 180 on me that I'm convinced I dodged a bullet on this one. He probably is on drugs or has some sort of personality disorder.
I went on vacation with my sister for a week, although we talked on the phone during that time and he acted normal, I came home to find he had moved out of our apartment and had only left a post-it note. I guess I made him watch SATC too many times...
47my boyfriend of almost 2 1/2 years left me a voice mail on valentines day telling me he had been cheating on me
48Wow, Pep85!-- I'd say you are def better off! What a Dr. Jekyl Mr. Hyde. That one was NOT a keeper! I'd say the worst I can remember was a "rumor" through his family who were my neighbors, but then rec'd an email that he was pursuing someone else that he worked with. It was at the very beginning, so it didn't hurt so bad, just felt like an emotional roller coaster because of the excitement of meeting someone new. Months later he wrote a handwritten note apologizing & acting like he wanted to rekindle things. I brushed it off.
49In 6th grade my boyfriend had his cousin call and break up with me for him.
