Stop the presses! Carrie Prejean will remain Miss California!
With the all the TV cameras pointing at him during a press conference today, Donald Trump announced that controversial Miss California will keep her crown.
Prejean's explanation that she is opposed to gay marriage, said Trump, was "honorable" and "honest," and he pointed out that President Obama gave the same answer. Bringing Obama into this is sure to give the story more time in the press (if that's possible). As for Prejean's topless photos, Trump determined that the pictures are fine, considering the Miss USA pageant is a "modern" pageant.
Prejean spoke for herself too. She was just giving her respectful opinion, she claimed, based on her upbringing, that marriage should be between a man and a woman. She argued that the attacks against her for exercising her freedom of speech undermined her constitutional rights. (Wait — don't the attacks count as free speech too?)
The still-crowned Miss California explained that she wasn't the most outspoken proponent of traditional marriage, but thanks to the media storm, she's become the most visible. Judging by the panel of experts that preceded and followed the press conference on cable TV and the crowd of reporters in attendance, it seems she's correct.
Do you think the Miss California saga has offered an important jumping off point for the gay marriage debate, or is it time to put this story to rest?

She should not be allowed to keep her crown. Her answer wasn't the only reason people were asking for her crown to be removed. I hate her answer as much as any one, but the Miss California Organization wanted her crown removed for the photos and because she wasn't fulfilling her contract as Miss California. I know if I wasn't fulfilling my duties at work I would be fired. Oh and all the media scrutiny? she brought it on herself when she started touring churches, becoming a spokesperson for nom, and going on fox news.
1I feel like she should have stepped down for essentially saying gays and lesbians shouldn't have the right to marriage like the rest of us. As for a few racy photos, who cares?
2Put this story to rest; it's stupid.
Also, it's not like Trump's NEVER let a Miss USA winner keep her crown because of photos...remember the other Miss USA a couple of years ago they found with some topless/drunk photos? He'd be a hypocrite NOT to let Prejean keep hers for the same things.
Bringing Obama into this won't make it any more visible - it's true, he's said things to that effect. But that has NOTHING to do with this incident, that's why nobody's latched on to what Trump said about it. Pop media jumps on ANYTHING nowadays...I don't see what the big deal is. The more attention you give it, the bigger it gets. STOP NOW.
3just please put this story to rest...she'd say her piece,i'm getting tired of seeing her in the news and stuffs, good for her for standing up for what she believes in,please her 15min is up,make her go away.
4personally, i think they should've taken away her crown, NOT for her opinions, but rather breaking her contract and not fulfilling her responsibilities as Miss California. that being said, enough already. who cares anymore?
5wow. i don't think she should have kept the crown. i'm sure her runner up is pretty pissed.
6Tres, I wish you had explained WHY she was in danger of losing her crown. It has nothing to do with her opinion on gay marriage. After the pageant, she started making appearances and endorsements without the approval of the Miss USA pageant, which violates her contract. Also, a nemi-nude picture of her emerged which was also against the terms of her contract. So please, don't act like they were going to take her crown just because she held a certain opinion!
I am a proponent of gay marriage, but I think it's unbelievable that some people think she should lose her title just because she doesn't support it. And you can't say that she doesn't represent Californians' views on the subject because Prop 8 just passed last November! Apparently, she represents the majority of people who voted on that proposition. Like I said, I wish gay marriage was legal, but people need to remember that tolerance is two way street.
7gays and lesbians want everyone to be tolerant of their lifestyle yet they are not tolerant of those who don't share their beliefs...
8Trump is soo milking this. Put the story to rest. PLEASE. And a few years ago someone who was Miss America was caught doing drugs, drinking excessively, having racy pics, bringing guys to the dorm, etc and Trump let her keep her crown as Miss USA, by the way (sent her to rehab or something thou), not the 'runner up' LOL.
And Tres, I'd have to say that when it comes to 'attack' speech it can either be classified as 'freedom of speech' or 'hate speech.' I mean, are speeches like 'Go kill/hang/rape the n!gger/f@ggot/c#nt for their opinion.../etc' considered to be freedom of speech?
Oh feel free to report my comment too if you guys think the 'example' is too harsh
9Oh please Anonymous 9:47, how would you feel if some people thought you were pedophiles, worshiped the devil, and didn't want to grant you basic rights because of who you are sexually attracted to. So please sit down with that lame ass tired argument.
10I agree with the anonymous post (#9)... She is entitled to her opinion just like gay and lesbians are entitle to theirs...leave her alone. I'm glad she had the guts to say her opinion instead opting for the politically correct bullsh** answers that many others would have gone for.
As for the topless photos...who cares...
11Here's the deal: not keeping the crown should have had nothing to do with her gay marriage stance. She violated her contract in more ways than just the nude pics. Otherwise, yes, partially nude pictures are no big deal- but they are when you signed a contract saying you didnt have any. I think she actually got off light bc of her gay marriage views- Trump was scared to fire her bc it would look like he did it bc of her answer. Otherwise, "beauty queens" have been fired for breaching their contracts numerous times in the past few years.
12I dont agree with her views on gay marriage, and she was patently incorrect in her answer (saying that people have the right to choose who they marry in CA when they clearly dont), but I wish that people would focus on the real reason her contract should have been rescinded. Otherwise, leave this girl alone and she'll quickly drop into oblivion. No way she'll be "famous" in the long run.
She is entitled to her opinion, but appearing in endorsements that are not approved is not acceptable and I think Miss California needs to address this issue. She has not been held accountable for her inappropriate actions.
I think this girl is a hypocrite. keep her in the spotlight. I predict her career in the spotlight will resemble Jessica Simpson's.
13She should not have lied about the pictures, and she should not have given appearances that were not approved by the Miss USA organization.
But, to be perfectly honest, none of this controversy would be going on if she answered the question differently. It pissed people off, and that led to where we are today. She has a right to her own beliefs just as those who disagree with her have a right to their own beliefs. But the attacks that have been launched against this girl are bordering slander/libel (including some photoshopped images in addition to the modeling photos that she actually took).
BTW...just because someone does not agree with gay marriage does not make that person a homophobe nor does it mean that they believe that gays are pedophiles or that they worship the devil. I do not support gay marriage, but I believe that commited gay couples should be allowed the same rights under the law that married couples have...through civil unions. Marriage itself is, by definition, between a man and a woman.
14I don't think she should have won to begin with because of her response. Not because I and many others disagree with it, but because she sounded like a bumbeling idiot.
15Her breasts were covered in the initial topless pictures. She said at the press conference that these were taken by a friend strictly for portfolio purposes. The ones that were leaked today by a photographer, where her breasts were exposed, she did not know existed. They were for a surf magazine and these were outtakes where the wind had blown her vest to the side. She never got a chance to see the pictures from this shoot. Mr. Trump himself said it's time to get with the 21st century. I 100% agree with her stance on gay marriage and I'm glad that she was brave enough to state her honest opinion when asked. Aside from all that, I think the real issue here is whether or not she was properly fulfilling her duties as Miss California. Obviously, Mr. Trump thought she was or that she at least deserved a second chance. So...NEXT!
16I also agree with pxpxcutie in that gay and lesbian couples should be warranted the same rights as the rest of us, but under civil unions. Marriage should be reserved for a man and women, just like the Bible states.
17^Yes. Because the Bible is all-ruling. The hypocrite should be STRIPPED of her crown. Not that she's new to that concept anyhow.
18The fact that she said what she said isn't a reason for her to get booted, and well Trump seems to be on track for allowing girls with questionable past to keep their crowns so no biggie. What she should be losing her crown for is missing engagements set up for her by the Miss California organization, and being affiliated with a political organization which I heard ( not sure) is a breech of her Miss California contract.
19If she didn't fulfill her duties as Miss California, then maybe she should have lost her crown. However, she is entitled to her opinion and according to her state's voters she agrees with the majority, so get over it. I find it hypocritical and so extremely sad that she is being slammed for saying that she doesn't agree with gay marriage. She has her reason why and she is entitled to it. What kind of role model would she have been if she lied. (And yes I do agree with her stance)
But in the grand scheme of things, I could give a hare's hair about whether she keeps the crown.
20Anon 18- for some it is, get over it.
21i think let's just move on and get over this already. she answered a question and she is entitled to her opinion. she deserves to keep her crown.
22I'm not surprised they let her keep the crown at all. She and the girl with the drug problem a couple of years back bring a lot of press to a pageant hardly anyone cares about anyway. Does anyone even know who won this year? I can't name a single Miss USA. I'm surprised she hasn't resigned the crown. She is already missing scheduled Miss California appearances to do other interviews. She's obviously not that interested in the job anymore. SHe has a new platform and she would be more famous if she quit and let the second runner up open Children's libraries and tour hospitals.
23The contestants for Miss America aren't supposed to have an opinion. That's why there's a swimsuit contest and not a debate.
WHO CARES.
24Ha! Honey this story is up way past it's bed time. Leave Ms. California alone!
"Wait — don't the attacks count as free speech too?" True but I think the point is she welcomes intellectual/cultural disagreement vs. vicious slanderous irresponsible attacks.
25I think she should be let go for not living up to her contract. That being said, sometimes being removed is the best thing for her. Remember the Vanessa Williams scandal. If anything it helped her career.
As far as the question she answered. He asked her opinion and she was truthful. I have a much bigger problem with the girls that don't answer the question and just use alot of "buzz" words. I don't agree with her opinion, but it isn't a reason for her to be gone.
26Miss California could have easily said something regarding interracial marriage, and no one would be standing up to her defense.
It's true, the first amendment gives you a right to be a bigot, but that doesn't mean that you should be applauded for it. She should be attacked for what she said. Its within our rights of free speech to do show. We cannot defend bigotry.
That being said, she did sign a contract saying that she did not have any nude or semi-nude photos taken. Though they may not be the most scandalous, she lied. Breach of contract.
Her stance may have brought her into the public eye. Don't blame the the fact that those photos came out on her opinion. Had she said something else and had won, they still would have probably come out. She should be investigated for breaking her contract. I don't care what Trump does or says, all he wants is publicity for this dying pageant anyway, and California is giving it to him.
27Oh, stop! She's persona non grata. She's not even an important title holder. She's not Miss USA. She's just a another dumbass with fake boobs.
28Nude photos: Who Cares! Against same-sex marriage: Entirely her opionion! She should have been stripped of the title because she isn't fulfilling her obligations as Miss California. In the press conference yesterday the organization stated that they can't get a hold of her, she hasn't made appearances for them like she is supposed to and she is making unofficial appearances while the capacity of Miss California. Those are violations of the contract she signed and she should be removed from the post. This whole thing has given her a ton of publicity, like she wanted. I am sure everyone remembers Vanessa Williams being stripped of her title for only a single infraction. This Miss California has several. I do not belittle her or put her down for her beliefs. Trump getting involved is the worst thing because he will milk this for all it is worth. He does whatever will make headlines. I am not a supporter of pageants anyway but there is a new Miss USA who has been cast aside for a runner-up and a media circus that needs to die out soon. It is offering nothing to the actual debate over the constitutional right for homosexual couples to marry. Let's focus there not on this shiny object meant to distract from the real purpose.
29I'm glad she got to keep the title. the ms. california runner-up annoyed me, she looked like a puppy waiting for a treat, just waiting for carrie prejean to be fired, with that letter she sent to the organizers. nobody would've cared about ms california's pictures or if she wasn't fulfilling her duties if her answer would've been different. I don't agree with her but it pisses me off how perez hilton gets away with this kind of sh*t. i've been boycotting him for a long time now because of his dirty, disgusting way of trying to humiliate people.
30I wonder how Vanessa Williams feels about this.
31I agree with margokhal--you took a story that was about topless photos and turned it into gay marriage. This argument got old three weeks ago.
So some priss from california doesn't agree with your views--she's not the only one, don't victimize her for it. I'm not saying I agree with her, but does her opinion really matter THAT much that it's worth getting all into a tizzy about?
32"She argued that the attacks against her for exercising her freedom of speech undermined her constitutional rights. (Wait — don't the attacks count as free speech too?)"
I agree. That was defective thinking on her part. She was attacked for WHAT she said, not FOR saying it. Cry me a river.
Government-sanctioned marriages is about civil rights, NOT about faith-based (religious) definition of marriage. There is a separation of church and state. Truthfully, I don't know why people keep mixing up the two.
Besides, there are many Americans who are non-Christians (this country has religious freedom). The Bible has no authority over them. Just because the Bible said a marriage is between opposite sex people doesn't mean squat to them.
Sorry, some Christians come across ignorant.
33I always thought that Miss America was the classy one (if a beauty pageant can be classy) and the Miss USA competition was the kinda trashy one with bigger hair and bigger implants.
