In one episode of Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw calls the New York Times wedding section the "single woman's sports pages." She and her brunch gang clearly have a love/hate relationship with the write-ups, alternately getting excited and depressed by them.

Chances are, your hometown paper has a wedding section, where you can keep tabs (or not) on all your old classmates getting hitched, or maybe you just read them for sport. What's your opinion on newspaper wedding announcements?

I've probably only read this section once or twice in my life. We don't get a print newspaper anymore, but even if we did, I just wouldn't be interested in reading about the local wedding announcements.
1I like hearing about how people met
2Well, it's about time for the wedding rush for my age group. You know, after college graduation and all that nonsense. I like checking and seeing who is getting married. I think my interest will wear off when no one I know is in there.
3I have the best love/hate relationship with those things, I suppose.
I scan the wedding announcements for funny last name combinations, like Jay Leno does on the Tonight Show [I mean, c'mon, who WOULDN'T laugh at "Shaver-Nicely" for a last name?]
The long ones with the pictures, I usually look at the dress the bride is wearing [and if she's paid for a full color announcement, how heavy the makeup is!], who's getting married to who ["Oooh, she's one of THOSE...marrying a doctor." and "No wait, SHE'S the doctor...guess who pays the bills in THAT relationship!"], where they graduated from and in what, their jobs now, and where they're going for their honeymoon ["Africa? Oh now THAT'S interesting!"]
I love guessing at people's lives...and the honeymoon destinations give me new places to look at when I travel.
Other than that, I hate love stories and anything romantically-related. I mean I seriously HATE wedding season with a passion! But you've got to find something funny about it to pass the time... :\
4Most of them are so ridiculous and self-congratulatory, with the cheesiest overly posed pictures, so I would say leave it, but my friends and I have a good time making fun of them.
5I read the New York Times wedding section online every Monday. Since I have no connection to the people, I like the stories. However, the wedding section from my hometown annoys me because it usually features old classmates and embellished stories.
6Personally, not for me. When I got married, I only informed my immediate family, and two close friends. In my book, nobody else mattered.
In the same vein, I couldn't care less about the marriages of strangers or those outside my inner circle. Thus, I'm disinterested in wedding announcements.
7I am not even remotely interested. I agree with the other posters who said that they are typically over embellished and self-congratulatory. Obnoxious. It's bragging, in my opinion. I don't need to show off how much money I spent and how happy I am and how good I looked to the entire readership of a newspaper.
8The Sunday Times wedding announcements always seem to be stories about couples who broke up several times because the groom couldn't commit, and then finally are getting married like, fifteen years after they met. They're supposed to be celebratory stories but all I can think is, "yeah...good luck with that."
9Ha! margokhal, you're right. They are worth reading for the crazy name combos if for nothing else.

11And now that they are married, can't wait to get their holiday letters!!
Newspapers are so 20th century. I just read about it on facebook or the couple's website. There's no need to advertise to the whole community. I don't need people in my business like that.
