"I know so many women that have done the procedure and feel better about themselves and the way they present themselves. And I think that the question is, whether or not, when you're looking at that procedure as an option, am I going to feel better about myself? It's not about one night. It isn't about one night of competition."
— Keith Lay, the co-director of the Miss California pageant, explains that the organization financed Miss California Carrie Prejean's boob job because she felt it would boost her self-image.

Maybe if this pageant girl had some real talents, she would feel confident with herself. The boobs aren't really hers, and they don't fix the problem. She needs to feel comfortable with who she is. That is what I believe makes a woman sexy and powerful. Not the fact she has a big chest. I once didn't feel good about myself, but I learned to change that, and let me tell you; the confidence in yourself totally trumps a small chest when guys look at you as a whole.
1I really understand why she did this.
I am going to be honest and say that I've had breast augmentation too. I didn't go very big either, I only have B cups. I did it for this exact reason, to feel better about myself. It was agonizing to never really develop. I don't regret this decision for a second.
I think it's really unfair to attack women for choosing to use technology we have to empower themselves in regards to our looks.
I don't like her views on gay marriage at all, but I hate that she's being made a target for this. I think her boobs are very pretty, and she is too.
2getting a boob job is fine if you want it--no one should be judged for what they want to do to their own bodies. but having it financed by the pageant organization seems a little odd, and is further proof that these pageants are not about celebrating women but about creating standards of "beauty" that often have no relation to real women.
3Confidence: "belief in oneself and one's powers or abilities; self-confidence; self-reliance; assurance: His lack of confidence defeated him."
Once you get a boob job, you don't have that confidence. Because you aren't believing in yourself anymore. You're believing in the silicone that has been stuck inside you. That's not confidence. That's insecurity about your real self.
I honestly think saying that you are getting a boob job for you "confidence" is bullsh*t. Girls want to be sexier/prettier. They get the boob jobs to get guy's attention, b/c they don't have the self confidence themselves, so they have to get it from the attention of other people. Having self confidence means you don't need other people to notice you to feel good (thats the self part: it doesn't include other people). Getting a boob job is the exact opposite of that. It means you don't have confidence without attention from other people.
4Girls just say they get boob jobs for "confidence" and "self-image" b/c that sounds much better than admitting to the public or themselves that they need sexual attention to feel good about themselves. And if someone disagrees, give me one good way how getting a boob job boosts your confidence without it including more physical attention. Our society is screwed up if all our women honestly think bigger boobs gives them more confidence.
In terms of it being a PAGEANT this is just plain wrong in so many ways!

I was engaged when I had my boobs done, and being married now I can tell you - I find sexual attention from guys more annoying than anything else. It's not why I did it at all. I respect what you're saying, but I think you're being a bit judgmental.
Is it so hard to understand why some girls would want to have normal sized boobs? If there were an equivalent surgery to help men with small penises measure up, you'd better believe they'd jump at it. It's a choice - I don't think being judgmental is useful here.
6spacekatgal, i TOTALLY agree that people shouldn't judge and you should do whatever you like with your body and more power to you. but here is a question: when you say you want "normal" size boobs, as if all size breasts aren't normal, it indicates that it is a cultural standard that is being established, not physical normalcy. small breasts are normal too!
7And I TOTALLY agree with you that small boobs are normal too! And beautiful! Kiera Keightly looks so amazing with her pretty little boobs - she'd be insane to change them.
I know all about there being no "normal" body type. I'm six foot two and size 6! I embraced being so tall, the way a lot of flat-chested girls embrace their petiteness.
But, for me personally, it didn't feel normal.

8I agree with efsarbaby on both of her posts.
I also agree with anonymous. My breasts have never been large, and they're even smaller now since I've been working out, losing fat and building muscle, yet I have more confidence than I have ever had in my life. My breast size does not define my confidence level.
9I'm totally for plastic surgery if you want it. I don't think you have to justify to ANYONE your reasons for it.
But I also don't see why Miss California's self-esteem is the pageant's responsibility. I don't think they should have paid for it for her. If it's something she really wanted, she could pay for it herself. The fact that they footed the bill kind of makes me suspicious of it all -- it seems like they made her undergo the surgery for THEIR benefit, not hers.
10Politics aside, her boobs look TERRIBLE.
11It just bothers me when women get boob jobs "for themselves". Is that really where the pressure to look "normal" comes from?
But I don't know how outraged I can be about the fact that she got implants and the pageant paid for them. I think the entire contest is just ridiculous.
12I think for me personally, the pressure came from myself. The pressure comes from myself to eat right and exercise everyday too, which are part of looking your best. I think it's normal Jungian self-actualization - knowing what you want and taking the steps to attain it.
As far as the pageant paying for it, it's a private organization. It's their business. Sure, it shatters the wholly fictitious myths about what the pageant is about, but who believes that anyway? It's about narcissism - pure and simple.
13Um, looking at the pics (current and in the past) I think Ms. California may not be the only who got the jobs 'financed' by the Ms. America's organization
14But unless mistaken, she's the only one they outed..hmmm..food for thought there.
Who cares, chick wanted some boobs, her and like at least a million other girls. I don't get the big deal.
15I've got 'normal' boobs, they aren't the be all and end all. Trust.
16I'm all for plastic surgery-to each their own.
17Ms California did not do this to get "normal size" breasts. Look at the photo. Ms. Barbie Doll.
18Her new ones aren't that big. They look average for her size (not normal...average). If you've seen what tape can do for pageant girls, even A-cups can look big.
19People get boob jobs for all kinds of reasons. Even on my little neighborhood street, there are at least four women with them. They don't pose with them or stick 'em in your face, and they're all married. Don't see anything wrong with it...and I don't judge them for it. They look great!
if she wants a boob job, whatever. it's just that she should wait until she's at least 23-25. i kept growing until about 24. she should wait until the growing process is completely done before any kind of plastic surgery
20I don't care that she has gotten the boob job (hell, being an A-cup myself I have considered it too at one point) but that fact that it was financed by the pageant committee is was really irks me! So would they pay for the lipo or nose-job or butt-job of other girls who become Miss Cali? If she wanted bigger boobs then thats her own business, but I am curious where the funs came from that paid for them because they obviously weren't hers.
21*is what really irks me
*funds (not "funs",lol)
sorry, typed too fast
22So, yes to a boob job; no to same-sex marriage.
I don't think I like this girl. Esp. representing California.
23HMMM... so basically bigger breasts let you present yourself better. My own personal thoughts on plastic surgery aside, why on earth does the pageant think that this is sets a good image for the industry. Why not pay for a therapist instead, there's less of a chance of harmful foreign toxins floating in her blood stream.
24Well, if we're going for a 'good image' for that industry, let's start telling those pageant babies that they can't wear fake teeth, hair-pieces, hairspray, make-up, fake tans, etc. We're talking five-year-olds. Pageants, if we're all being honest about them, aren't about natural beauty one little bit. Also, I doubt if she's the only pageant participant who's had work done. I'll bet all this came out because someone was disappointed with her view on gay marriage. Any takers?
25nevaeh1978 so true!
