In his surprise press conference recently, President Obama vowed that he would replace retiring Justice Souter with an "independent" legal mind. He gave no word on the nominee's gender, but the odds that he will pick a woman are better than 50-50.

Only two women have ever sat on the court, and right now Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the only lady justice. Still, President Bush faced the same situation and he nominated two men to the court during his term.
Do you think being a woman should be on the list of qualifications for Supreme Court Justice?

I'm all for diversity being an aim!
1Only if she's qualified ... and I would perfer a man with my views than a women without them !
2I like diversity too, but I'd rather not have diversity just for the sake of diversity. There are great and awful people that could be in the Supreme Court position, BOTH male and female.
I want a person who will keep the political balance in the Court and is qualified and capable of doing the job WELL. If that person happens to be a woman, or a minority [or both!], then that's just that much better!
3Yes! I want a woman on there . . . whose qualifications and capabilities beat the male contenders for the job! The Supreme Court is too important to throw away capabilities in favor of nice-looking, diverse photo ops!
4Diversity on the Court would be great, but a qualified person, whatever their gender, would be much better.
5"Only if she's qualified ... and I would perfer a man with my views than a women without them !"
Well said.
6Like most said...a women would be great but only if she is qualified.
7A woman would be nice...but she shouldn't get it b/c she's a woman! Gender shouldn't play any role in the decision.
8Sarah Palin taught us that gender equality doesn't necessarily mean qualified or right for the job.
9Of course, but as almost everyone else has said.. only if she's qualified.
10Yes, but only if she's qualified.
11Same here -- only if she's qualified. If not, it would be tokenism, and that's not good for anybody or anything.
12i think that it would be good for a woman to be nominated. we've seen success with sandra day o'connor - so bring on more women!
13The most qualified person should be nominated. Of all places, the Supreme Court is the LAST place I would want to see Affirmative Action happening.
14I'm certainly not against a woman being on the Supreme Court but I'd rather see a Democrat, no matter what gender.
15Oh 50/50 ^^
16Said no. It can be cool to think there is someone that can really represent woman but finally, it is miportant ? We don't know what kinda woman she is. And a woman won't necesarely make a better job than a man because she is more "human" of sth like this (in my opinion).
It's like having a woman as a president. To be a woman won't make her a better president. But if what she does is really really good, then why not
Oh i didn't reed, but finally i was saying nothing more than what most of you girls said before =)
17Course!
18Who ever is right for the job, regardless of gender.
19anyone who is open-minded would be great!
20I would love to see a woman being appointed to the Supreme Court but really, it doesn't matter as long as whoever is being nominated/appointed is capable. Qualifications & experience should outweigh gender. Party affiliation should not matter too.
21Well, obviously only if she's qualified, I think that's pretty much a given. It's not like there's a shortage of women who could do the job well.
