That's it. If the president has time to read a novel, there is no viable excuse left not to. Maybe he's starting his own viral campaign for literacy?
In an interview for an upcoming New York Times Magazine, the president said he's reading the acclaimed novel Netherland at night because he's tired of reading briefing books all day. Fair enough. What did we expect the president to do at night — watch The Real Housewives of NYC?
The book's been compared to The Great Gatsby, but what's it about?
Hans, a Dutch financial analyst living in lower Manhattan, grows increasingly alienated from his wife following the Sept. 11 attacks. During their separation, the main character spends a Summer alone in New York and strikes up a friendship with a wily Trinidadian businessman named Chuck, who helps Hans rediscover his childhood love of cricket.
Cricket? I'm in. I expect to see sales of Netherland skyrocket. Maybe Obama is the new Oprah?

Maybe this helps put him to sleep
1Is there anything Pres. Obama doesn't have time to do? It seems like he does everything: Works out daily, reads, plays with the kids and Bo, balances the budget, tackles global warming and war...makes me feel lazy.
2Ha, Yum. I guess that's why he's president. I know what he means about wanting to read something besides briefing books, though. I definitely find myself wanting to read MORE for pleasure the more I read for work. As long as it's on paper and not a screen. Book about cricket, huh? I might crack a peek at it.
3Oh wow, another article about how apparently incredible Obama is for doing simple everyday things! I guess there just aren't more important things going on in the world to talk about, hmm?
Obama is not supposed to be the new Oprah. He's the PRESIDENT if people don't realise that... though I suppose he doesn't have ultimate power. But he isn't a hero or an idol and I do not understand how people can think of him as a role model just because he's the first (half) black president... this has gone too far
4I agree with you Crayolasky - this is absurd. The amount of Obama worship in the media is beyond absurd! Let's grade him on the job he does as our leader, not on the fact that he has time to read or what shampoo he uses.
5S**t, I voted for him and even I'm getting sick of hearing about him. I think the idea with him "having time to read" on this post was to maybe point out that he really Shouldn't have time to read if he's focusing on the crisis (or now crisES, thank you swine) at hand. Then we're supposed to fight.
6I am so going to add this to my Amazon Wish List.
7crayo-why is a bad thing that people look up to him? who else do you want your kids looking up to? I can't even think of anyone in the media who I'd want my kids to watch and learn from. If they're going to hear about someone all the time, let it be him.
OH, and another thing, if you can't see why someone would look up to him because he's the first BLACK (yes, i know he's mixed, but he sure as hell is more black than any of the other 43 presidents) then you need to reconnect with some black people, like me.
He's someone who is a great representation of the new black in America. we need someone who's not a sports star, comedian, or rapper to represent us. And unfortunately, lawyers, doctors, etc. don't garner media attention. He's smart, handsome, articulate (not like bush) and has a beautiful family. why WOULDN'T we love him?
8I read that book after a ton of critics giving it high acclaim. I thought it was pretty boring. W/ Obama's tight schedule, it is a shame he used his little free time reading such a yawn of a book.
