In 2008 the average American man got married at 28, and the average woman at 25. These facts got me wondering: how do these marrying ages compare to past generations?
I did some digging through US Census data, and found some trends. See if you can guess at what ages Americans, past and present, like to tie the knot!

ugh 4/5, i should have got question 4 right...my nana got married at 19 and i always thought the average age would be around there...i guessed 18 rather than 20. lame.
13/5
2I'm surprised I got the last one wrong. I would have assumed that earlier in the century, the average age would have been in the teens. I know that my grandparents and even my mom's older siblings were all teenagers when they married.
I'm very surprised that the marriage age has not been in the teens since records have been kept- All my grandparents and great grandparents were married before 20!
3I bombed. Ha.
4Wow, I got zero right. Way to go me.
54/5.... Not too bad for guessing :0) Haha. I was really surprised some of my answers were right, though! I got the first wrong, though - 26 seems like it would be pretty old (like middle age?) in the 1890's.
63/5 for guessing - surprised about the last question. My sense was wrong I guess.
7This was fascinating, despite the fact that my performance was woeful.
82/5 - I really thought teens would be average somewhere in the past...
9hmmm..the last question surprised me.
10Oh, I actually wasn't that surprised that the marriage age hasn't been in the teens since records have been kept, which is why I put that down as my answer. I mean, that's only since 100-150 yrs, right? And probably widowers remarrying are also taken into account seeing as how it's an average.
11Dunno, makes sense to me really...
good quiz!
12Err...I thought question 3 was a trick question, it seemed so obvious. 4/5.
133/4, correct ^^
140/5... so sad.
15I got one right!
16Very nice site!
173/5
18Very nice site!
19Very nice site!
20Very nice site!
21I got 4/5 =p good guessing
26 seems like middle age in the 1890's, telane? seriously??
22mariellester, marriage records have been kept for much longer than 150 years.
where have you people been studying history?
23I think it's easy to forget, in today's era, how frequently young women married much older men. Until the past 50 or 60 years, there were very few ways for women to support themselves economically; we should realize how lucky we are to have so many options!
24Wow, I was married at 18 and thought that was normal.....
251/5 !! how shameful! im quite surprised i got the last one wrong ! oh well......
26Да уж...
