Feeling too lazy to go to the gym? You might jump on a treadmill or lift a few weights in solidarity with women in Saudi Arabia who face the shutdown of all women-only gyms.
Saudi women already face extreme limitations on their freedoms under Wahhabi Islam: they are not allowed to drive, vote, or run for public office; they must be covered in the presence of unfamiliar men; and they're required to have a male guardian.
And now, because the government has agreed to license fitness clubs for men only — categorizing women's gyms as unlicensed and illegal — they have nowhere to exercise without the scrutinizing eyes of men.
In protest, Saudi women recently launched a campaign called "Let Her Get Fat" which protested the decision to close down all-female fitness clubs that are not under the supervision of a government hospital or clinic.
Even entrepreneurs are frustrated. Interested in hearing why? Then read more.
Businessman Bader Al-Shibani, wanting to open a women's fitness club in Jeddah along with the men's club he runs, was told by the government they didn't have the authority to let him do that. "I ran into a stone wall at every turn," he said. "In the end, I just abandoned the project."
So what's the big deal about women working out? For one thing, in a kingdom that intensely regulates the female body, the idea that a woman would focus on strengthening her body — for her own gratification — must rankle patriarchs on a symbolic level. Leading Saudi clerics see an even more imminent threat. If women exercise, they argue, they'll be tempted to leave their homes and neglect their husbands and children.

Ugh, just disgusting.
1Thank you for highlighting this story. One of my best friends lived in Jeddah for several years and while the Saudi people are wonderful, some of their treatment of women is definitely not. It's very extreme in comparison to other Muslim countries.
2i agree tlsgirl this is SO disgusting! a woman should have the right to do whatever she wants with her body . . . it's hers. plus come on, working out isn't just for looking good, it's so important for health . . if a lady isn't healthy how can she take care of family, didn't they think of that?
i'll have these ladies in my thoughts, and hope the best for them
.
3i really hope something can work out for the saudi women. i remember reading something very recently about them not wanting to shop for lingerie because all the shops were owned by men.
4Big effin' deal... I'd sweat to death anyway in that Saudi Sauna.
I call it
serendipity.
5Last place on earth I'm going...like they'd let me in. Not gonna happen
I can't believe this thinking still exists in the 21st century.
I'm sure some will defend it because it's their "culture", but keeping women in the dark ages is beyond atrocious.
6where is citizensugar?
7Unbelievable. I hope they get their gyms -- and much more.
8so if theres any slight threat that women wouldnt have time to slave for men & men will have to grow some, heaven forbid?! & do they think flashing or getting some eye slippage , than shes a dirty ho?!
9wow. and such a thriving country huh? there's no way i'm going there. it's just crazy. i'd run. they are so brainwashed to obey the men and silly laws, I wish the women would understand that this is not right. but i guess it's very hard for them to - being taught that's the right way to live from birth and not being able to run somewhere with normal views, as the husband would find them... and kill them? i don't know.
10Are you kidding me? It's 2009...get with the times and stop controlling your women. This is absolutely disgusting!
11the funny thing is that there are some women in saudi arabia who believe that this is a good thing because they are so strong in their faith. in afghanistan there were women who threw rocks at other women protesting a law legalizing rape....i cannot imagine what its like to be so brainwashed that i would think that its okay that i dont have the same rights as men.
12just ridiculous..
13i used to live in saudi there is no activities that a woman can do over there at all and if u sow a woman with running shoes on in a mall u have to know she is walking she is not there for shopping!but actually all the beauty centers and spas over there have gym&women usually go there to workout but they are extremely extremely expensive!
14Arab women run consistent with their religion. They do not want affected by the gym. Less information about their gym. But gym managers should offer a gym with the condition of women arab. Positive thinking!
15Dont worry about saudi women , they like it this way , in an avearage saudi family the husband picks the maid and the wife picks the strong , muscular young driver so do not worry they are happy.
