Regardless of what they think about his policies, a lot of Americans agree that President Obama might be the nation's first hip president. While some think his style is elusive and hard to define, I've narrowed down 10 things that make Barack Obama cooler than other commanders in chief.
Here's my list:
- He's addicted to tech: He refused to give up his BlackBerry becoming the first emailing president.
- He's not self-conscious: While he's sort of a goofy dancer, Barack sure looked cool when he came out grooving on Ellen's show.
- He inspires teen slang: At one Albany, NY high school teens respond to a sneeze with "Barack you." (Barack does mean blessed.)
- He's not uptight: The White House work day starts at 9 a.m. and it's not necessary to wear a jacket in the oval office.
- He's married to Michelle: Nothing makes you more cool than having an inspiring partner by your side.
To see the rest, read more.
- He doesn't get bitter: As Fred Armisen demonstrates on SNL, Obama can't hold a grudge. Hillary's Secretary of State! Joe Lieberman got to keep his powerful position in Congress. Barack even got friendly with rival John McCain right after the election.
- He brought basketball to the White House: Not only did he promise to install a court, but he also correctly predicted that North Carolina would win the NCAA tournament.
- He keeps up with the memes: Barack showed Beyonce his "Single Ladies" moves at the inauguration.
- He can tell a good joke (sometimes): At his online townhall he joked that his virtual audience was probably high. But his sense of humor can flop too — like the time he made an insensitive joke involving the Special Olympics.
- R&B artists just stop by his house: On Tuesday, Usher dropped in (without an invitation) to the White House to watch President Obama sign the Serve America Act.

I'm glad Obama is "cool" and all...but really, I'd prefer for him to be productive...
1More productive regarding us, not big corporations that could care less about society, except the fact we are the consumers. I don't really like what I see happening...
2I reckon Obama is brilliant.
3Barack and roll!
4does his being cool really matter?good for michelle, but i care more about him being more productive as the commander in chief,he could be the uncool prez but as long as the people are happy i wouldn't care.
5O....k?......
6Where America is right now though--I think "cool" is better than "effective." America used to be so disjointed and torn because so many people had zero support for our leader. Bringing the people together and have them stay positive during this terrible economy I think is much more effective than being professional and slowly getting things done behind closed doors.
7FDR was the coolest president.. look what he did for us... Obama... what have you done, other than be really awesome and hip? I'm waiting... I liked him and his fmaily before they were EVERYWHERE and HUGE celebrities (as McCain said, and i despise McCain) OMG did u see michelle obamas dress, omgzzz liek so hip lolz obama was like sooo totally on his black berry totally LOLZZZ..
Ridiculous. Do your job, please, don't be Paris Hilton.
8Oh, and i hate how people treat Obama like a god. In Florida people 'graffiti'd' his change posters by writing GOD on the bottom.. how absolutely disgusting. And this is coming from a Buddhist!
9can I give you an opposing view?
1) he's addicted to money
what's a meme? does it come with fries?
102) has no conscience
3) inspires the Castros
4) thinks protocal is a guy from the Shire
5) he's married to "Proud Michelle"
6) he inspired bitter within the CIA
7) Nascar RULES!
9) my neighbor can tell a good joke and he's an idiot
10) Barack Obama's serving Johnsville brats!!!!! these "people" have no business just dropping by the White House
I don't think being cool matters in a president, and i agree please don't try to be paris hilton.
11But with that said, I really don't think he is cool. He seems like a poser, trying to be cool. Kind of like what my dad does....
And I simply love that the teleprompter is in that picture!
12He reads great from a teleprompter, if he doesn't have one I can't sit through his speeches... I'm a lover of public speaking, so when people constantly say "uhhh" or "uhm" or "like" or anything similar, I get annoyed. He's great with the teleprompter, which actually takes a lot of practice/skill, so I give him credit.
13Thank Barack that he is in office. My cats could do a better job then the previous republican rollover. Rome wasnt built in a day and he has this awful mess of 8 years to fix. If Americans finally support their government after years of downward polls and Military heartache (I say this as being a Military wife), then kudos to us! Every president has their screw ups (some more so then others obviously) so let him screw up so we can love/hate him too. He could prance around in the best Dolce and Gabbana and I wouldnt care. Im happy to know I live here and not anywhere else.
14That makes him be really human =)
15He is an example.
I agree with cfp. I didn't vote for the coolest person to be President; only the most capable. But if coolness is a by-product, that's O.K, because I do agree that he is cool.
16Well, we can talk about his policies and all. But this is about his coolness, and he is very cool. He doesn't seem to even try. He just is.
17I couldn't think of what I wanted to say on this post. But I think I agree with Janneth. I don't agree with much of Obama's politics, and while I agree with those who have said they don't want our President to have so much celebrity status, I have to agree that he does seem to have a coolness about him that comes naturally. In some cases though that coolness comes across as arrogance (imo) but I really want to give him the benefit of the doubt and just let him do his job and hope that he remembers that he works for all of the people not just the ones that voted for him.
18and he's damn sexy
19I am a big Obama supporter and stand by him and his decisions as president... but seriously, I do not give one sh*t whether or not he is "cool," and that is certainly not why I voted him. Something about this list rubs me the wrong way.
20Ugh what a disgusting post.
I like the anonymous comments the best, especially #10.
21I couldn't care less if he's cool or not as long as Barack gets the job done right, and so far he's doing pretty well.
Oh, and yeah, he is pretty smooth. And Michelle seems like such a lovely woman, and highly educated, which is exactly what we need in a first lady too. Michelle is intelligent and classy wherever she goes.
22Besides being cool as in hip, he is cool as in stays cool, doesn't get angry, doesn't banish his enemies, almost doesn't consider his detractors to be enemies. Like with Lieberman as mentioned. That is a very important attribute for a leader. The ability to stay calm. And to include persons with different opinions and points of view.
23This is what the news has been reduced to.................. thanks isn't this like two months too late?
24#10's comments were just dumb
as dumb as the post she was replying to.
25alrighty then...
26Who cares if the President is "cool" or not? I could care less if Barack Obama can dance and play B-ball; I just want him to be an effective leader for the country. I guess to him that means throwing money at corporations and hope they make the right decisions to help the economy. Unless he's the next FDR, I could care less how hot he is, how cool he acts, or how great his wife's arms are.
27.... really? Really, Tressugar??
28LOL to the ppl complaining about this not being a serious piece of journalism, if you want news go to a newspaper!! I personally found it diverting, which is all I ever want from this site!
29man, some people are so uptight! if you want to be so damn serious about your news go to CNN. it's just a fun post. loose your goose!
30I agree with the article - a lot of Americans find Obama to be more normal than most presidents. I think that's part of what gives him the "hip" factor. That, and he actually seems to listen to what people are saying. Sure, he doesn't always do what other people say [which is a good thing! You can't please everyone all the time, and SOMEBODY is ALWAYS going to be pissed about policy or how you act or how you dress or what you say, that just comes with being a public figure], but I think for the most part he is doing as well as he can with the situation that we're in, and the policies so far have mostly made sense.
I also hate how people and the media have tried to elevate him to demigod-status. It's not healthy. And seriously, he didn't ask to be portrayed that way. But the portrayal also puts him in an awkward position - whatever he does, it's going to look like it sucks. If you don't please the Obamamania machine, they'll turn around and go "where's the change? why aren't you doing what you said you would? [Never mind that it's only been 100 days and we have like 5 major crises that have been at least 8 years in the making!]". You try to please them, and "oh, look, we elected this guy, and he doesn't know what he's doing!" You just can't win. So you just do what you need to do and move on - that's what Obama's been doing, and it's the best strategy.
Of course, I didn't *vote* for him b/c he's "cool", I voted because I believe he's what America needed to get through the crises we've been having and would stop all the foolishness and the lies...and I'm confident I made the best choice.
31TresSugar, keep it up. thank you for interesting and sometimes charged/pricklier topics. I'm loving the new comment threads where people get really heated; I come to the site now to see the conversations as well as the posts. give us more!
and Obama is cool, and he's got 4 years to be effective, let's let him work a little bit. Rome was not built in a day.
32I don't find Obama to be cool, but Hugh Chavez ,the Castro brothers and the rest of America's enemies find him as cool as sliced bread!
33The reason that is the case,is because Obama is of the same political believes and they are!
Yes, I totally want our country to pick Presidents based on how "cool" they are. And GW Bush e-mailed in office. So did Clinton (he only sent one I believe but that technically made HIM the first e-mailing President). But whatever. I just want all the insane government spending to stop. Pretty pretty please, Mr. Cool President??
34No one is in the presidents presence without being vetted. I assure you no one just stops by The White House. That is ludicrous. No pun intended. And many presidents have brought sport to The White House. P.S. Our president should spend more time on his job than publicly putting his NCAA bracket. And the man is not stupid when it comes to power and the Clinton Machine. It has NOTHING at all to do with being bitter or not. It's playing the game.
35If only being cool was all that mattered.
Let's compare:
100 Days of FDR
100 Days of Obama
He's hardly the next FDR. Did anyone see the analysis of his campaign promises? Pitiful. And folks, for any of you know who anything about history, FDR did build Rome in his first 100 days. I don't think these two compare.
36Some people here need to get over themselves.
I just want him to work hard. I wish the media would stop the Obama love fest/overkill and let the man work.
37I think his "coolness" is just another was of saying that he is relatable. I don't feel as if I ever saw the human side of Bush over the wholed 8 years he was in office.
And on another note, I think people need to be patient and realize that its going to take more than 100 days to get us out of a mess that took several years to get into. And also take some personal responsibility instead of waiting for our government to fix everything. I'm not looking for a handout because I made smart decisions and didn't buy a house I couldnt' afford or rack up credit card debt.
38Flying, that last paragraph cracks me up from this part on: "And also take some personal responsibility instead of waiting for our government to fix everything. I'm not looking for a handout because I made smart decisions and didn't buy a house I couldnt' afford or rack up credit card debt." You're a conservative and don't even know it!
39I may only be 16 but I'm sick of propaganda.
40Sure he may be a "cool guy" but he's our president
and should start doing some good. All he's done is
continually promised us change and left the work
to those clowns Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank.
Believe me, the only change I've seen is the coins
left in the pockets of the American citizens.
OMG ok we get it. Barack is considered 'cool'. Enough already. Let's see him perform so major miracles and live up to the 'GOD' status that Americans have given him. Barack Obama is qucikly becoming the new Oprah Winfrey. Wonderful, but I'm looking for a PRESIDENT, not a celebrity or pop culture icon.
41I think I just threw up in my mouth a little...
42Um, yet again TresSugar's readers demonstrate how nonsensical they are. Want real news and hard-hitting coverage, READ A NEWSPAPER. You won't find it next to "How to Build a Bigger Orgasm" or "Zit-Popping 101". Seriously? Get over yourselves. You are not deep.
Everyone wants things to work as fast as their ADHD. It doesn't work that way nor has it ever. FDR's policies didn't start overnight. It took years for them to work (and honestly, some of them have been more detrimental than anything).
Where was the concern for the past eight years? Oh, I must have missed that coverage next to the Spring 2005's list for the newest shade of pink lip gloss.
43i agree w/ popcorn's comment waaaay up there. i think we need someone in office that seems human and relatable b/c everyone is having such a tough time. its only been 100 days (plus a few), he has a lot of work to do, but at least he has the ball rolling. only time will tell if his plans work out.
44Ditto reedchick152. Go Barack!
Either way...anyone is better then the last President!
45While I agree HoneyBrown that Obama should be allowed time for his plans to progress, I do want to say about FDR's policies not starting overnight...they DID, quite literally. The Emergency Banking Act literally did begin the very day after his inauguration (four day bank holiday from March 5th to March 9th, etc).
I understand that people are not as panicked as they were when 1 in 4 was out of work so it's not as easy to send an emergency bill through Congress in 24 hours, but it's also true that I haven't seen Obama set in motion the plans I hoped he would by this time.
46As an addendum I would like to make clear that I'm not looking for things to be solved overnight, but I am looking for forward progress, and I'm afraid on many levels, right now we're not seeing enough of that.
47hartsfull - When did I ever say that I was liberal or conserative? It is true that I typically lean more liberal but that dosn't mean I agree with everything. I don't think its black or white, there are several shades of gray. I make desisions based on what works best for my life, not what a political party says. So maybe we should all stop classifying people and opinios as Liberal or Conserative. This divide between the parties has only made things worse. The liberals aren't out to get the conseratives, we should all try to come to some sort compromise or noting is ever going to more forward.
48No you certainly didn't say that. Normally I'd agree with most of what you're saying. Just that statement you made above and applauding for this POTUS and administration do not coincide.
And as far as the last 8 years (not to you, to others) Dems have controlled congress since 2006. Before dems took the house and senate the stock market was at it's highest, and began it's decent 4 months after they took control. Gas prices also began their ascent. Gas has gone down considerably, at about the same they were before Dems took congress, but I do notice it is slowly going back up.
There is nothing that Bush could have done since 2006 that the dems didn't allow.
49Glad to see dirtycloset's observations.
